As for a decent random group, you'll have little chance with that. As for the game itself? Excellent. There are now three seperate Guild Wars games and one expansion to be released next month. With Guild Wars 2 coming out next year, you have a lot to look forward to.
Look around guild recruitment forums or something to find a guild of PVE players.

You might want to try the Guild Connections forums. There are sub-forums for players looking for PvP and PvE guilds as well as PuG's.

Just to clarify, GW2 is not due out next year. They are predicting that the betas will begin for GW2 in the latter part of 2008, with the retail product due 2009/2010.
Meanwhile, they are expanding the existing GW chapters and making changes.

if I were going to get back in, I'd wait for GWEN and start on an even playing field

Darkobra said what I would say though, it's a great game, it's hard to find goods groups sometimes though. There are a lot of great guilds out there too.

For a balanced view, also check out the Hall of Knowledge forums - it's a much more positive environment for those of us who prefer to get on with playing the game rather than pissing and moaning about it.

Awesome, Welcome back "home" Josh! Although the original and expansions have little people in the starting areas willing to help others out.
