Buying Prophecies today...

I am going to buy guildwars today most likely. After reading the great FAQ guide in this section I am going to get prophecies and try it out, and bring 1-4 friends with me if the pastures are green. We've been playing WoW but people have gotten bored of it and the grind and want something more low key with better PvP, so GW seems like the obvious choice

But I figured better safe then sorry. Risking the new poster flaming initiation thing, I am going to ask for any and all advice as a newbie to GW who is probably buying the first pack. While I feel I could handle one of the newer packs, one of the people I want to bring with me is my GF who is not as experienced in games so that is a reason to stick to the one with the easiest learning curve. Over in WoW I played Hunter (like Rangers?) then Warlock, then Warrior once the first two became too easy. Since the average skill level in PvP in GW must be much higher though I am tentatively guessing that I'll play what I had a talent for managing well, a ranged attacker with a pet. Looking forward to trying it out and all replies appreciated

yes rangers are simlair to hunters and warlocks are like necromancers execpt necros can summon up to 10 things at once and pvp is harder in gw imo

I have both wow and gw (have not actually touched wow in 2 years, so go figure), so I can safely tell you that both have their fair share of grind, just in different ways.

Prophecies is probably the best place to start, glad you're on the bandwagon

The biggest piece of advice I can give you as a new player is this:

Go to the GW Wiki, add it to your bookmark list, and be sure to refer back to it frequently. Everything you could ever want/need to know about the game is in there, and it also has some guides aimed specifically at new players.

Prophicies is a great place to start! It has the slowest learning curve and the best storyline imho.

If you plan on doing more pvp than pve you'll likely wish to pick up all 3 chapters as most of the newer pvp builds utilized skills from all three. Thats not to say you cant pvp with just Prophicies.

As for what class to start with the ranger is an excelent choice, however its play style can be quite diffent from that of the Hunter your used to.

As a new player your likely going to find your Ranger fits into one of 4 roles in most parties.

1) Interupter
2) Traper
3) Damage dealer
4) Co-ordinator

The first 2 are straight forward, you load up your skill bar with mostly skills of one type or the other. For a dmg dealer youve some options (Barrage/pet is popular in pve but not in pvp) youll likely be dealing either direct dmg or conditions. The forth one takes some more skill as your leading the party, pulling mobs and calling targets for a spike. Rangers excel at this given there long ranged attacks and abilities to move around the battle field fast.

A lot of stores offer the full package of all 3 games for a bundle price of like 50 or 60 bucks, so it may be cheaper to go that route.

The good thing about Guild Wars and grinding is that grind is completely optional (with minor exceptions). Let's face it: people like grind, which is why WoW is so popular.

In GW there are incentives to grind (such as titles or armour sets) which will not give you any real advantage over other players. All you gain is an increased sense of ego and illusionary satisfaction and wellbeing (e-peen).

I don't like to grind at all =P But some people do I guess. Unhappy people But that's not something to go into here I guess.

I bought the "Guild Wars Game of the year Edition" which apparently gives me a pretty newbie weapon or something. So far so good! Have a jenna jameson clone named Dawnquiver One running around as a ranger in Ascalon city.
