I have to send in my current video card for RMA and I scrounged a Creative Labs Voodoo 2/Banshee from 1998 out of and OLD box in the basment. I found a hacked driver for XP to make the card work. Just for kicks I wanted to see if GW would run. It runs but I don't really think I can play it.

It's pretty cool what GW is capable of running on. My net connection is only about the speed of dial-up(and its shared between 15 people). I can get in to say hi to people and to walk through town, but a ping rate of 30-50,000 on a good day isn't that great for playing....lol

Though 9 years is a bit much to hope for, I'm glad Anet went with the low-speed internet, older computer, casual gamer audience when they designed the game.

But that's just my two cents

Lol nice, not sure how old the card i tested on was, but i suspect a bit newer as the graphics werent quite that bad :P

When i went home, installed on my parents computer with an ATI rage 32mb, was unplayable too though with only 4 fps

GW used to run just fine with lowish settings on my old GeForce 2 GTS

Now I've got an 8800GTX, so I've seen the full spectrum of graphics possible lol...

Yeah my 8800GTS is what being RMAed. But due to me having jumped on the AGP bandwagon for several computers, the Banshee is the 'newest' PCI vid card I have. heh

Dang, I bet a pair of Voodoo 2's in SLI would ROCK Guild Wars.

I have that in my 486. Plus a Matrox card. 8 + 2x12MB videomemory. Woot. Unfortunately it only has 3 PCI slots and I only have PCI networkcards. Need an ISA networkcard, bah.

Not sure if Guildwars requires a pentium class processor, otherwise I'll try it some day to see what happens.

Actually initially all they will do is have me change it, which I'd be happy to do. And I've been waiting a long while for someone to report it so I could....I made the name almost a year ago and regretted it by the time I hit lvl 20.

All I have to say is:

OMG! The Mists have come to Lion's Arch! Warn the Lionguard! The world as we know it has come to an end!!

OK, well, I'll add this, too:

Voodoo 2 was the shiznit back in the day. Oh I miss those days... Looks pretty good considering.

I prefer my 8800GTS SLI for that...

Ahh... ye good ole days of my first Voodoo Banshee with 8MB of pure RAM power! And then Voodoo3 3000 with 16 mb memory and after that teh Radeon 9500 PRO 128mb...

I'm curious how much FPS you got...

There was one recent fun review of Voodoo 5 6000 prototype made in memory of long gone 3DFX - they tried to run Doom 3 on it - and it ran! With 0.7 FPS! But no graphics corruption...

I bet that the CPU has taken over most of the work of the videocard there, but still great to see that

GW has one of the best designed graphic engine I've ever seen.
It came out at 1st only using Direct X 8, and looked out of this world. They upgraded it to support DX 9 (Factions) but still remained there backwards compatibility.

I'll bet that top-end SLI'd or Crossfire'd GW wouldn't look too different. There's a ceiling as to what GW can show, and it doesn't take an ubercard to reach it.

Well as I see from my 8800GTS SLI - basic graphics , shaders and all the DX9 stuff is pretty much the same as on my previous Radeon 9500 pro. There is pretty much no difference there and 8800 DX10 support is useless in GW, as it does not use DX10 at all...

But with twin GTS'es in SLI I am able to add some really advanced Antialiasing modes - impossible to do propertly without SLI like the amasing quality X32Q Antialiasing (SLI only) or most notable 4X4 antialiasing which would not work/crawl on every other card (on my SLI it averages 50 FPS @ 1280X1024, so that you know what horsepower this mode needs) or X16Q antialiasing (which is only avaible to Geforce 8XXX cards) with high frame rates and great quality. Antialiasing in the end really enchances graphics amasingly, by removing the stairs effect from models.

Also series 8 cards improved their Anisotropic filtering heavily making things look much sharper than any previous generation cards. This is a double edged sword though - if textures are low resolution it makes them look obviously crappy (like prophecies armors), while better textures look amasing (factions and nightfall armors).

However all this is for the inthusiasts riff-raff that scan every pixel of their monitor for minimal flaws.

Other than that - you can easily play this game on a good mid range Geforce 6/Radeon 95/6XX with most settings at high with great frame rates. and you probably can run it well on even older cards. You can even go with some lowish AA modes nicely.
