One skin per name. One name per skin
bilateralrope
Currently there are several skin names in guild wars that correspond to multiple skins, like the Battle Axe which has 3 different skins using that name, including one that does piercing damage instead of slashing like most axes.
We also have situations where a single skin has multiple names, for instance the White Scythe and Krytan Axe both look identical, but for some reason they get multiple names.
The first situation can cause problems where you see one person trying to buy/sell an item with the same name as the skin your after, only to open up a trade and find out its a different skin. The second situation can mean you are trying to buy one weapon skin, and someone who has it under a different name ignores your WTB because they don't recognise the name your advertising.
So what I'm proposing is that ANET puts out an update that does two things:
1 - For every name, there is only one skin to correspond to it.
2 - For every skin, there is only one name to correspond to it.
These changes should be fully retroactive. Personally I can't see anyone getting upset because ANET changes the name of their weapons, though I'd advise waiting a few weeks between changing the weapons that drop and the retroactive change so that sites like guru auctions don't have many troubles.
Because green weapons also come with fixed stats, they should be left untouched here. Also collector items with unusual names (Flame Spitter, Plasma Blade, etc) can also be left untouched.

The Serpent axe worries me, in the trade window there is NO WAY to tell the diffrence between a canthan and a tyrain. Other than a dyed canthan changes a little but with tyrain having a better value there is no way to "prove" its a tyrian and not just anohter canhtan.

Yeah... there are, for example, multiple 'Fire Staves'.
There should be only one Fire Staff, and the others should be called (Tyrian Fire Staff, Istani Fire Staff, Canthan Fire Staff, etc...)

It adds "color" to the game. Sure its confusing for newer players, but so are a lot of things (the hundreds of different skills in the game for instance).

Evade was removed from the game since it was functionally the same as block. Now rangers get block stances, which doesn't make sense.
If anything this points to an attempt to simplify the game.
If they simplify GAME MECHANICS there is no reason they should not simplify naming conventions for weapons. The fact that the PVP weapons are using a 1 to 1 correspondence system shows it can be done.

So obvious. So simple.

Semi-related. I picked up a blue bow called "Long Bow" but it was actually a Horn Bow. Talk about confusing! (OK, its blue)

having multiple skins to the same named item is extremely confusing especially when certain versions are very rare.

And lets say I find a skin I want to buy by browsing guildwiki, but its one that shares its name with other skins. But I have no knowledge about what the skins icons are. How can I tell that the seller has the variant I want instead of another one ?
Wulfgast
Yes, definitely /signed. This has always bothered me, and still confuses me from time to time.

Eh, I usually only play my assassin, and he has 5 greens that I alternate between for the builds I use and I don't usually get good items, just merchant fodder.
But what the heck, if it'll make others happy, I'll /sign it

I think it should be something more like this
1 skin can have multiple names ( swamp club/ ram hammer for example0
but 1 name cannot have multiple skin's
/signed otherwise
