Has Anyone had "Unacceptable Name" suspension before?

I went to log in a few minutes ago and was give a prompt stating that my account was suspended for "unacceptable name" for the next 44 hours. I find this odd because most of my characters are reaching a year old, and my newer character is my PvP slot and unless having Paragon backwards is unnacceptable I do not see an issue.

I am not posting this to complain, I am more curious if anyone else has had this and if so, what happened to your character? I have ONE character, who is just about a year old that I could see an ultra-conservative in their 80's might frown at, but I do not find the name vulgar by any reasonable stretch (especially in a game rated "T for Teen"). Unfortunantly this character is also my second most played character as well. The thought of having this character deleted is quite annoying, and I would probably be grumpy enough about it on a basis of principle alone to not buy GWEN/GW2 and probably steamed enough to stop playing what I still have for a while lol.

So...has this happened to anyone else? How did your characters fair? *fears for his time-sinks*

Never happened to me, but pretty sure you just get to rename him/her - no deletions.

Can you give the entire name that was banned? with exact spellings etc. There was one recently on gwonline who was banned for Icanna Spell.

They weren't banned for that name, they were disallowed from using it on the naming screen. They narrowed it down to the Icanna part, and I don't think it was ever determined why that wasn't allowed. Probably some kind of curse in another language or a racial slur beyond me. No idea.

A.Net is bats**t crazy. Their recent "enforcements" of the name ban policy make less sense than Mein Kampf played backwards. I am fairly convinced that there are people in the game who take advantage of A.Net's kneejerk policy on name banning to simply screw around at someone else's expense. "Hey Bob, I'm gonna protest this guy's name for some absurd reason. How much you wanna bet A.Net will ban him or force a rename? Huh huh huh."

They didn't ask me to rename the character when i got back. It was a pvp character so i just deleted it. I'm guessing if it is a PvE they will have to make you rename it.

this is totally off-topic but if its true that you have to rename an existing pve toon for an inappropriate name, wouldnt it also be possible to re-design/re-customize the appearance of existing toons as well?

if this is in fact true, i want a stinking option to change the appearance of pve toons.

I'm not personally offended by pretty much anything, but it's not about me, it's about people who are. Post your name if you really think it's completely without merit, but in almost every case I've seen the player has a pretty good idea how their name was offensive. Good rule of thumb: If you have to ask if it's offensive, don't use it.

Guru won't let me post naked pictures of famous people, even though I'm not offended by it. I don't have a single problem with that, I'm over it.

QFT. i remember snype's wtf post about 'snype has a i d s'. he obviously knew it was offensive because he had to work around the filter to get the word, 'aids' in there. if you know it was offensive, accept it and move on. if not, learn why and go...haha! i for one couldn't get teh name, 'gloria gaynor,' for a survivor character because it had the word, "gay," hidden in there. that and things like, 'icanna,' are just anomolies.

Someone I know had this happen. They had a character named "Scorched Buttocks" and he went for 1yr+ without any problems then one day tried to log in and got something like a 48 hour ban and had to rename. So no they do not make you delete the character. The only thing that happened was that they sent him to the screen to enter a new name. You do not go through the whole customization screen again. Also we are both pretty sure it was someone that was being a jerk said they found it offensive just to get him banned. Because I have seen TONS of names in game that are far more offensive, and someone had a thing against him for no real good reason. But ah well.

The word Christ is deemed offensive. Went to make a make toon with the name and it went no gg.

Guy in my old guild was banned for using the name EoE Bomber. Funny as it happened right after his team won halls.

It's pretty apparent that Anet doesn't scan the player database searching for inappropiate names. However, if someone was offended by your character's name and sent in a report you could get a ban/rename. Personally, I've reported quite a few players for offensive names. By adding someone I've reported to my friends list I can see that Anet actually does take action.

More fun yet, see an offensive name and add it to your friends list. Don't report them until just before a holiday event. If you choose to pick a name that is offensive, be prepared to get a ban/rename at any time!

I got banned a while back for Nutz the Squirrel. Also was banned once for African Tribal Man. They are a "wee bit" too sensitive about some of the names.

You name your character Muhammad of Persia

Someone is offended that you might be making fun of Persians or Islamic names and reports you. YOur name is Muhammad and your from persia.... you just got banned for naming your character after yourself. GG. Just an example, but I have seen it happen.

For being a T rated game I'm amazed at how much stuff we can't do. I'd hate to see what we couldn't have in an M rated game made by Anet.

I THINK I heard a way out of this: Report your own name and request a name change. It apparently avoids the ban but you get the rename. And yes, that name is definitely going to get a ban if some one else beats you to the report.

Of course, to make sure absolutely nobody was offended maybe ANet should give every character a "name" comprising of a random combination of letters and numbers. There...that would be fun right? That wouldn't be taking "no offensive names" too far? Well...maybe mathematicians might be offended that their beautiful numbers were mixed with dirty letters... new plan is needed I think.

I was never temp banned for an offensive name but I tried to put 'Jewel' as part of a character name and it wouldn't allow it. After about half an hour I realised it had 'Jew' in it which must make it anti-semitic.

In the Euro districts you should see some of the non-English swearing, racism and downright sick names. I guess NCSoft don't have translators. :P

Aperently Icann means "Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers" I think it's a copyright name. :P

I took german as a second language and from only 3 years of 40 minute classes I know enough to understand some words/ phrases and people have extremely offensive names, racist, prejudice the whole 9 yards. Heck, people in HA spam 3 rows of Swastika symbols, and I don't think they were using them in any other method then to provoke people because of the bad thing the swastika symbolizes. Oh wait, I'm supposed to report these people? Yeah right a net, how about you send me a paycheck then we'll talk. Oh maybe you want me to give you a list of names, the 1000-2000 bots that visit citadel everyday. AHAHHAAHHAHAHAHA

If you don't report them, you don't have any right to complain about them, IMO.

Being serious, I agree that players with offensive names should be forced to re-name them but the stupid amount of political correctness involved is just.. stupid..

I've seen all sorts of crazy names, like Fah Q Bich and all sorts of crap.

It's odd though. I once had a character with the word "Satan" in it and no one seemed to care (I deleted her though).

I think "Icanna Spell" means "I cannot spell".... but they shouldn't ban that person for that.

Eh, my girlfriend got her pvp character nuked for the name "Corpselover Mary" - no ban, no rename, just an erased pvp character.

Well I will say that if the character I am worried about is the target then you are also going to need to worry as well.

The character I am talking about is my sweet Ritualist "Holy McBoobies". Is it immature? Yes. Do I think its vulgar? No. Is in unacceptable in a game? Only if it were rated "E for Everyone", not "T for Teen". It is unbecoming of a man who has a "professional job" and a fiancé who rolls her eyes at him on a daily basis for it? Yup. Could someone be offended by it? Yes....but not if they have played Guild Wars for more than 7 minutes, I cannot believe anyone that would be offended by the name would be willing to tolerate the character models in this game.

No, not in a game where you have to go to great lengths to get a female character that does NOT look like a prostitute. Not where ANet has paid programmers and modelers to put a THONG on a female assassin (and an unstated hero of Ascalon from some threads I have seen), to create sets of elementalist armor sets whose boobs are held in place by nothing more than the collective will of mothers across the globe, to create a set of ranger armor whose very designs separates the rest of the world from said rangers nether regions by nothing more than a strip of leather and a windless day. Not when developers have joked in interview about how sexy the female models are and have stopped within an inch of saying "sex sells" and going on to talk about how awesome naked underwhere parties are in the game.

No, if my character is getting an account suspension for not showing sexual reserve then I call foul on this one. If “Holy McBoobies” is the bar where “unacceptable” begins, then I request that ANet as a company give themselves a perma ban for going well above and beyond that bar with their own product wherever possible. “A picture is worth a thousand words” har har har, so ANet has put the word “boobies” a million times on my screen then.

Ok I am done ranting, but surely you cannot disagree that the actual content provided by the game itself is significantly more offensive than my characters name. If the issue at hand is showing sexual reserve, I am well below the example of “unacceptable” that they themselves have given me as a reference (since their terms of service are so subjective).

By the way, I have taken part in almost every community event with the character, I have taken part in a conversation with Gaile Gray and the Frog with the character, I have played through every single campaign and she was my de-facto AFK character for nine rings to get the lucky title. So long have I had this character and NOW it’s a problem? Very very odd to me….and silly.

I guess choosing offensive names is a bit like the guy that runs around and flashes by opening his raincoat. Most of these names reflect badly on the person choosing them. I wonder if *Dren Freller* my assassin is due for a ban. I had a Diablo II assassin of the same name. I guess Crichton or Aeryn Sun would spot the association.

roommate got warned and forced to rename b4, his name was Queef Blade, now he is Q Blade-_-, dumb.....

I tried to use the word Honeysuckle for my Mesmer named after the flower. Apparently that was unacceptable and could not use it. After what I have seen in game the word Honeysuckle should be FAR from being unacceptable.

@OP "Holy McBoobies" is a great name (a bit laughable). I think you should fight this and send a complaint to support with the arguments you have already stated here. I would also use the "Dupek the Mighty" argument used earlier on this thread. I would also state the prejudice on English speaking people making obscene names is insane considering the number of extremely foul names that are permitted on the Euro and Asian servers. I play with people who speak Korean and the names they get away with would make a grown man blush. Yet I can't use Honeysuckle go figure.

I've been suspended at least 2 times. The first one was back when there was only proph, and my pug made me be a tainted necro to counter IWAY... So in protest, I named the character Smell My Taint, won halls a few times, then it seemed like I error 7ed, tried to log back in, and the suspension screen came up. No rename, since it was a pvp character. My most recent ban was because of my name Ths Sht Will F U Up, after my favorite Combichrist song... A name which I've been using for 1+ year now. The only reason I got busted was because, in keeping with the name, I made a ritualist named Ths Sht May F U Up. Someone got upset in TA because we beat them, and reported me. And of course I had about 7 other offensive names at the time in my account.. here's a list of what I can remember:

I totally understand why I got the suspension, not complaining one bit. Only thing I'm kinda annoyed with is how most people are not offended in the least, but yet grief you because you beat them. GG
