Would you if you could run a private server?
manitoba1073
As most people know there are games out there that have private servers for other games.
Well would you run one of GW if you could? This is not about morality or any other such BS but a simple question.
If there was any way to run a private server of GW would you?
Now for my answer.
I sure as hell would. Mostly due to the fact from most of the screwups anet has implemented in game, and I wouldnt care if it was an offline server or an online server.
So what about the rest of you guys would you.

Too many friends on the real servers to do that. If i had unlimited modding ability on it though, I would definitely have fun with it.
Edit: Actually, I wouldn't. Modding games very quickly kills the enjoyment.

If the real servers go belly up like auto assault, yes. I want my toons.
Exoudeous
Sounds wonderfull, you mean i get to play with even less people online and get updates even less often, and all for the same monethly price? sign me up.
/sarcasm
Private servers are pretty much only for people who dont want to pay a monthly fee, so it would be soooo useless to have one for this game. the only other reason for private servers is for when the real game servers get shut down so people can still play the game after the company stops support.
doesnt work like that, youd have to start over, you couldnt keep your characters cause they are on anets server

No. For the simple reason that I've played on some private servers for certain games and they will never be as good supported as the original, never have that much players to play/compete with and will never run as smooth.
Only reason I could think off is if you wanted to test out some things (dunno what that would that you cant do in the original), or trying to mod the game.

hmmm guild wars pve without a-net's horridly pitiful excuse for balance (NERF NERF NERF everything except what's actually horridly overpowered in PvE, then give that a buff).... yeah, sign me up for a server download. same cost, without the game constantly degenerating.
jackie
I ran private server in WoW for some time mainly to test few gamemaster commands, talk about unstable playing :]...
Private Server would need quite a powerful machine to keep it from getting crashed.

Depends, if i could mod things to how i want then yes.
I'd love the be able to give the AI my ideas of how they should work,or be able to spawn weapons/armor/dyes so i can make nice combos , just for screenies
Skills however i wouldn't change that much, i mean sure we all bite izzys head off when he changes something but , he does have a really hard job, the thing i would do tho is if certain things are been suggested to change to this and that, i would change them to see how good it works.
So if people are saying a skill that is 5/.25/20 is overpowered but by changing it to 5/1/20 it would be balanced i would like to see those changes especially if Anet isn't changing it on live server, they probably did change it in the dev server to see if indeed that would make the skill more balanced.
So in other words i would play the dev :P

Iuris
I don't think I would.
As long as GW servers are up, there's no reson to unless you want to pirate. Once they are down, the community will disperse and I'd just hope they'd modify the content first so that it would work as a single player game.

Most people don't have the hardware, bandwidth or knowledge to do something like this. That said, if I could legally run a private server, I would. If I could get updates and support from Anet, I'd be all over it. I've run a lot of FPS servers in the past and it's fun for me. But I am a geek and proud of it.
thezed
If it was legal and I could do some moding, yes.
My main playing would still be on the Anet server. I would use my private server to set up all kinds of crazy stuff and maybe even try to design my own explorables.

flyinhigh
i would, and it wouldn't have a pvp side!

Private server for this game? Nah. Only plus to it, would be no bots. Thats about it.

Sir Green Aluminum
The communities in private servers are like 2x or more worse than the real servers. The net baddies hang out there like haxxors or people who want every high lvl nows! There are even a few botters on private servers. But one of the good things about private servers is that if it's for one of those Korean games that take like a year to release the same update for the international/English version you get the update quick.
I would'nt use a GW private server because Guild Wars is already easy as it is and stuff does'nt take that long to get through, except titles.

Definetly pvp only server, i can finally balance the bullshit and even make my own maps.
Would really like this to be available lol

doesnt matter, cause hundreds of others wouldnt and everyone would have high end armor/fow armor and perfect gold weapons with every skill.
even with self control its still cheap the account still wont feel like the one you played through for many hours.
I have used private servers for closed down mmo's trust me they have alot worse peopel then a normal game, and theres still bots. someone would have to have no life in order to run a server as well as an offical one

Diablo???
No I wouldn't.
I played Lineage 2 on a private server, and it was just one huge character-masturbation fest, insane amount of gold drops, god like weaponry sold dirt cheap, everybody can trick out their characters in less than a week... and the game becomes boring so quick, you'll forget that it was even an online game. In the end you'll just end up with a server with everyone wearing the same god damn elite armor with the same god damn elite weapons with the same god damn elite build.... whats the point?

for an example of good private servers, check out the uogamer servers for ultima online they host 3 different servers to highlight different key points in the game's lifetime, and it all works really well.
The Herbalizer
nope it would bore me. noone to talk to, noone to see your accomplishments, maybe cheating which makes game have less fun etc.
Gwmaster
i think i would, first thing id try is clear fow with a lvl 1 character.
dsnesnintendo
o ya...i would make everything more....funish
can you say mallyx vs the entire ascalon army(level777)
/dance gives you 100k

ahhhh reminds me of the D2 "white set" armor (if i remember that correctly)
Kool Pajamas
If I had the computer power to handle it, definitely.
spellsword
If I could mod it to my liking, I definitely would. No more loot scalling or stupid skill nerfs.
Akuma
If someone good could set up a PvP server, with real community input and no carebears who ruin balance, and custom maps, then I'd see it being used quite a bit.
Noanoa
No; I play GW because of the community, farm so that I'd have something to show off to other people, hang around in the GH or elsewhere because of the people I know and have befriended. I've tried other games on private servers, and I know there's no real incentive to keep playing after you've got all the elitest of the elitest equipment, be it modded/haxored or hack&slashed with rates of over 9000. Not to mention the total lack of maintenance and moral. A private server could be fun as a personal playground, but it'd get boring before long.
Engel the Fallen
Yeah I would like it as a personal playground, or move my alliance people over. Be great to play PvE pre all the nerfs over the years.
The potential for real PvP would be great as well.

Apple
If I had the power to remove factions + prophecies and revert the game back to march 2006, I would.
drago34
I think it would be pretty boring. The community for the server would be so small it wouldn't be fun. It would be like a low end live server, ok...enough joking it would just suck.
holababe
I've co-run a WoW server for about 12 months and the stress is seriously not worth it. There's an excess of hackers and griefers and everybody is always bitching about something.
That said, a GW server for me and a few RL friends would be awesome. I'd love to play around with armors and weapons and casual HoH against my friends.

manitoba1073
so anyone else thinking of they would since the newest update?
Antithesis
Definitely no to a private online server.
Definitely yes to a locally installed single-player with heroes and hench or an 8-24 player LAN. Couldn't care less about PuG's or online PvP, i play in groups with RL friends so an offline / LAN GW would suit me fine.

Yes I would want the ability to do world building if the Anet servers decided to make GW 1 abandonware... However I highly doubt that will be the case...
I mean look at teh WoW beta back when they had a world builder system... It was fun but there were lots of bugs in it... It has vastly improved over the years yes, by the hands of good fan coders... But they are illegal non the less. both to run and to play on. so Don't go messing with them unless you never plan to return to the pay to play realms...
In GW we do not have that particular problem. BUT... if anet did decide to stop serving GW1 say 10 years down the line in favor of keeping GW2 active, and maybe GW3 by that time... Well yea of course people would expect to have someplace to use their GW1 product on. so yea I would be all for it absolutely. I would bet Arenanet would be too if it meant they could move on by that time to bigger better things with the franchise.
