What OS? If its Vista you may have to go in to the Properties menu on the shortcut and make sure you are running the game as administrator to get the game to load. Its what I had to do.

Do a -diag and see if you can connect to any of the servers. If not then do a support ticket

Sounds like something is blocking your access. Since this could be any of a number of programs running on your computer, you may do better to contact the actual support.

BTW, in my case, I found out that the memory resident part of SpyBotS&D, a known anti-malware program, will let me play GW, but will prevent it from downloading content. Look if you have something like that on your computer.

Usually, firewalls and scanners of all sorts allow you to make an exception for a program, look into that possibility too

As Iuris said, SpyBot Search & Destroy's resident program (the Tea Timer) will occassionally cause this exact problem.

Look in your system tray - the little row of icons next to the time display on your taskbar - for an icon that looks like a little program window (white rectangle with a blue title bar on the top) that has a padlock on the bottom corner; as your hover the mouse over it, it will display "SpyBotS&D-Resident". Right-click on it and choose "Exit", then run GW again and the update should work properly. When you restart your PC the next time, the Tea Timer will also restart automatically.

Why Spybot should only cause this problem on occassion - the only thing I can figure out is that some game updates, rather than merely downloading additional data, have something in them that wants to overwrite the main GW executable - the Tea Timer's purpose is to prevent the overwriting of .exe files. I say that based on the error message GW throws up (when it's happened to me), something to the effect "GW can't write to ...".

If it's not Spybot causing this, you might try disabling your anti-virus and/or firewall (if you have one, say, Windows Firewall if you're using XP) and then try running GW. Remember to turn them back on afterwards if the update is successful.

look down the list and you will see what each command does. If you ticket support now they will only ask you to do this for them before they look into it

Kind of a simple question but can you access any web page at all? Just wondering if it was a gw problem or simply an internet access problem.
