Whats it all about.

Helllo everyone, I bought Guild Wars on Friday and played it a bit over the weekend. I am a level 5 Ranger with Necro as my 2nd profession. I bought the game because it was recommended to me by my cousin, he told me the online community part was great etc.

However Ive not been able to party with anyone, nobody in Ascalon City seems to want actually do anything except trade and get over a wall (which I have no idea what it means). Is it because Im at such a low level that the missions I need to do are so far below most people playing? Ive been playing the missions on my own, and in a couple of them been getting my ass handed to me because I am so low on numbers. I also joined a guild (cant remember the name of it sorry) but I dont even know what joining a guild is all about.

I dont even know what the aim of the game is really, so far I have killed some bandits for a load of money they stole, killed some queen worm after getting an egg, chased a load of enemys away with devona from a bridge, killed a nightmare monster in the catacombs. Im currently getting destroyed trying to kill some monsters in the catacombs cant remember what they are called but they are quite deep in, is it satanic blood?

Any advice for some one who clearly hasnt got a clue what he's doing, I do really enjoy the game I just feeling Im issing out on the best part only playing on my own.

You're in Pre Searing at the moment. Everything you need to do is meant to be solo'd, unless you want to party with 1 other. Once you get out of pre, more people will party with you. You can also use henchmen if you cannot find a party.

Once you feel you're ready, you can take a quets from Sir Tydus, that lets you leave pre, and lets you goto post-searing. THEN you should start teaming up with people. Ranger's a nice starter profession, and if used with Plague Touch, a Necromancer Touch skill, its pretty cool because Expertise reduces the Energy cost of Touch skills., and you get to transfer a condition you're suffering from to a foe.

This is how stupid I am I didnt even know what pre searing was lol Ive just looked it up, and get a bit of a better picture now. Im trying to get my head round the game before Eye of the North comes out so I have an understanding for the latest version.

The people wanting to get 'over the wall' want to farm (repeatedly kill for own profit) the charr so that they can get to level 20, at which in pre searing that get the 'Legendary Defender of Ascalon' title. If you ever need help whisper me ingame.

Just a suggestion, you shouldn't go for the Legendary Defender of Ascalon title if it's your first character. You should only level to a certain degree then leave pre. Why do I say this? Well its because if you just stay in pre for the title, you're going to be spending a looong time there, and I mean months, and you won't know or understand the game fully.

I'll expand the answers a bit.

As you have just started the Prophecies campaign, you find yourself in the verdant lands of Ascalon. This area is essentially just one giant tutorial. You are meant to familiarize yourself with the professions, with the use and combining of skills and general game basics.

Play around for a bit, meet the NPCs, learn some lore, explore the catacombs, take a hike across the northern wall, generally enjoy.

As for grouping, you must realize that this is a tutorial are and as such, life is easy. There's nothing you can't do on your own, except for two quests: one that grants you the resurrection signet skill and one that lets you go across the northern wall, where some more dangerous foes await. Therefore, there's little incentive to party up with anyone here.

Since this is your first time here, I would suggest doing all the quests (except the one that takes you out of presearing), reading what the NPCs tell you, and explore a bit. There are some very nice sights here (my favourites are a cave in the northwesternmost area, the wizarding tower in the mountains, and the darkening sky as you go across the wall and approach the Charr ceremony (definitely something to see)).

After that, you'll get to leave Presearing forever. You will never ever be back, as the game then skips two years.

In the later areas, you will get the opportunity to discover more on the storyline, learn tons of new skills, party up with 3-7 people and generally play the game.

One sad thing that might bear mentioning is that GW is actually getting somewhat old in years. As many people have already done everything there is to do here several times, it can be somewhat hard to find a party in some areas. But don't worry - you can always simply get compter controlled henchmen here, they'll do the job. Often better than random players, too...

Well it's something like this. Hero/Hench>Dumb people who rush in to a mob, generally random people. Smart/Trustable people>Hero/Hench.
And just for the added punch, Heroes>Hench.

You're not stupid whatsoever. Being a new player is fantastic...exploring things you've never seen before...not knowing what's coming up next. You're not supposed to know what's going to happen...when you do take Sir Tydus' quest and move into the dreary world of Post-Searing Ascalon just try pressing "M" and zooming out for a daunting-sized map

Make the most of "pre-searing"..."post-searing" isn't as pretty at all...but stick with it...you travel through several diffrent regions throughout your travels through the game. Although you can only be in parites of 2 players at the moment, the number of players allowed in a party will increase as you move through the game...from 2 to 4 to 6, and finally, 8 players.

you also just happened to pick the worst week in presearing history to join the game. Due to some individual's twisted dense of humor, none of the regular players are willing to trust anyone they don't know when it comes to joining groups right now.

You can find others willing tot go along but you have to do a few things to make this happen.

1- Start by asking a question in chat about what you need to do.

2- Be willing to map travel to a different town or outpost to join the group. (ascalon is a place where nobody established wants to join a group right now)

3- Be specific in what you need a hand with. Nothing gets disregarded like "Need help with quest". Name the quest, try to be in a town near the goal when you ask.

4- Experiment with your own skills and attribute numbers. You may just need to adjust your combination.

5- "please" and "thank you" go a long way.

6- Be easy to find and standing still near the exit when asking for help. Make sure you are not bunched in a crowd of bodies that make you hard to find. and be ready to go when you ask.
