Dervish or Paragon?

I'm going to get Nightfall soon and I can't decide to either star a Dervish or Paragon (don't have enough time or money to start both). I'm looking for something that can survive, good dps, and very useful in game with other players.
If I start a Paragon, I'm thinken Pa/War. Think it might work for a good spear dps/surviavability/ support character?

p.s. does a Paragon have armour on its head?

Paragons can be good damage dealers, excellent support, but tend to be ignored by the community of players.
Dervishes are good melee damage dealers, but offer no utility to the rest of the team (except some weird healing builds).
Paragons do wear head gears, but it looks a little bit like Elementalists' stuff :

I just brought the collectors ed of nightfall and made a paragon and a derv. I LOVE my paragon to bits, and rarely play my derv. Just personal preference, but spear throwing does it for me.

I like both classes, both are very powerful and useful in both PvE and PvP. As Utaku said, they are not so popular within the community, but the community is as usual dumb. You cannot go wrong with either class, it is more about what you prefer.

I'm looking for something that can survive, good dps, and very useful in game with other players. The Paragon is the team player of the two. Extreme survivability due to high armor and shield, very good dps (unless you focus on chanting like Caruso nonstop hehe), Spears inherently do more dps than bows, spears, axes and swords (14-27, 1.5 seconds and extremely good attack speed buffs on top of that) could do and "Go for the Eyes", "Aggressive Refrain" and "Focused Anger" give you energy and adrenaline like there is no tomorrow.

Some just cannot stand guys in skirts. In this case, make a female one, which are lovely Amazons indeed. For male Paragons, I almost suggest you make a bald one if you want to use Elonian Armor (your hair often goes straight through the high collar, very annoying), which is cheap but very nice to behold. Eye of the North seems to bring a lot more armors for Paragons and Dervishes, nice ones, too.

My only legendary survivor, that is my Paragon. For a reason. Safe midline position and "There is Nothing to Fear" makes your whole party strong and resilient. I suggest you get "Watch Yourself", "For Great Justice" and "Shields Up" from your secondary profession.

You will also like that many of the Norn PvE skills seem to be shouts.

The only thing you should know when you play a Paragon is that people badmouth them despite their amazing abilities. This is a miracle.

BTW: I suggest you start out as Command Paragon if you do not want to unlock too many skills by Faction or use Elite Tomes early on.

It really depends on how you play. I prefer a paragon, but I know allot of great dervish players. Paragons are actually more accepted now if you have good skills. I have seen quite a few times parties asking for paragons lately. They are quite capable of doing anything and making your party survivor incredibly low odds.(like aggroing more then 2 groups in hardmode and ending up with no one dieing, i dont recommend doing this but it is quite alright with a good monk and damage reduction paragon) I have done everything with my paragon with guildies and freinds, including fow, doa, hardmode almost everywere. He was also quite easy to get protector of all campaigns with using hench and heros. And he was the easiest surviver in my oppinion. Just have to know were to level to legendary.
