Looking to start a new character...

I'm going to be starting a new character soon to beat the Prophecies campaign, but I was a profession that also has extensive solo farming potential once I've completed the campaign. I've considered starting a Necromancer... but I'd like some second opinions. Thanks, and sorry if this isn't the correct section.

*EDIT*
Might also help to say that my only character at the moment is a Dervish.

Monk is the quintessential farmer from prophecies (especially if that's the only campaign you have) - cap SoJ and off you go with the 55 build.

Necro is an excellent choice as well, you can run a 55hp build with SS to as good effect as an SoJ monk, if not better in some cases.

Elementalists can do some farms as well using kinetic armor and spamming spells with aura of restoration, but this tends not to be as fast as either of the two listed above.

Of course warriors can farm lots of things using Gladiator's defense or any other number of builds.

Rangers and mesmers can't do as much solo-wise, though they have a few niche spots they can handle.

Naturally, if you have either of the other campaigns, your farming prospects expand accordingly.

Basically, it's all up to taste in character and what you want to farm. Any profession can farm. Scout this section for builds / areas that you like or would want to try, and check out http://www.pvxwiki.com/wiki as well, looking under farming builds.

If you want to make a necro you should go for it

they can do a lot of group farming in prophecies with SS or MM 5 or 4 man farming or there are also 55 SS farming, my ppint is there are a lot of farming you can do with necromancer so I would reccomend that if you were planning on it anyway
