A Little Unfair To GW Gamers
Yellowrose
I guess I have a little rant to get off my chest here.
To give a little background info so you can better understand my rant. I was introduced to GW by my son for the very first GW beta event for Prophecies. After seeing what an awesome job the developers had done on this new game I went and bought my own preorder and have since bought a copy for each of my computer systems and now own 3 full version copies of Prphecies 2 full versions of Factions and 2 full versions of Nightfall plus my Prohecies pre-order and my Eye of the North pre-order. And to top it all off was informed yesterday I only really needed 1 copy but seeing as I have 3 game accounts I have copies for each account to some extent.
I have spent a good amount of my pay cheques on this game because when not fulfilling job obligations, I love to relax and play for a few hours with both of my kids and thier friends. My kids are not really kids but adults(34 & 26) who when it comes to computer gaming, are just like a lot of you, kids who never grew up...lol...and mom is just as bad as they are.
Now for my rant.
I went out on Wednesday and again purchased all 3 campains and the Eye of the North pre-order from my local retailer ($123.00 CDN) looking forward to this weekends beta preview to discover I CAN'T take part.
Why You ask?
Because my characters are NOT at Level 20.
While I have played since the game was first released a few years ago I have a job that has me traveling all over Canada and when working, work 12 hour shifts 7 days a week with no time off until whatever contract I'm on terminates. The only time I can really play is when I'm on offtime at home. So because of this my oldest character is only at level 14 and the newest just leveled at level 5.
I feel if I have a valid pre-order key I have paid for the right to take part in a beta weekend and should not be penialized and disallowed to take part because my characters are not at a certain level.
I feel this is discriminatory to loyal gamers like myself who play as often as they can and who spend a lot of money on these full version campains and pre-orders.
I feel if they can limit what you see by the cd keys attached to your game account then they should be able to allow beta event weekends the same way. Then also allow others to take advantage by character levels. This would make it more fair for those of us who pay for pre-orders and still be fair to other gamers who get the chance to play more often then gamers like myself who's time can be sometimes limited.
End of Rant
For those who read through it all I thank you for taking the time to read my views. Some will agree and others will not but I at least got this off my mind.
Now seeing as I'm a new member to this forum I think it's time I went around and looked at what you guys have got here. From what I've seen so far looks like a rather nice looking site and I look forward to spending some time here and getting some much needed hints and other info I see you have supplied for GW junkies like myself.
Have a great day and thanks again for reading my little rant.

It's an expansion meant for level 20's. You're acting like level 20 is actually hard to get.
Stolen Souls
Sorry to hear.
However...
Right from the start, it was made pretty clear that the expansion was for level 20 characters.
"Guild Wars: Eye of the North is the first true expansion for the Guild Wars franchise, providing new content geared exclusively for level 20 characters."

eye of the north is specificly for max level characters. thats what its specificly designd to be. it even says so in its description, you wont even be able to play it when you have the retail game till you get to 20.
you may have paid for everything, but if you have played so little in 2 years that you are only level 14, why is it such a big deal to you?

I don't understand you're problem fully.
If your characters are only level 5 and level 14, I'm fairly sure there's a TON of content for you that you need to complete before you begin worrying about an expansion =)

stiffler
Wow, that would mean you have the oldest level 14 character in the game lol, wouldn't you have been better off finishing atleast one campain before buying a new copy?
natuxatu
Well I can understand.. even though it's expansion you would think you could take your characters over at any level.. or .. attempt to... I think they should have made it slightly more clear.. but hey you can level up fast in Factions.
Yellowrose
It's not that it is all that hard to get but the time needed to get there which is the problem. I have a laptop that travels with me but after a long 12 hour shift and it's usually on midnights with about 1 hour traveling at the begining and at the end makes for a 14 hour day and is tiring enough. I also have my own fansite for another game and need to look after it and the server it's on as well, so GW is basically an at home only relaxation for me and sometimes that at home time isn't often. I can sometimes be away from home for 3 - 6 months at a time. That is why level 20 is to hard for me to obtain.
Arkantos
Well then I guess you're out of luck on GWEN. ANet isn't going to change the way they develop games because of people who cannot play all the time. It's an expansion, and expansions aren't meant to have low level content. They have 3 campaigns, go play those.
Yellowrose
Well a sneak peak should be available to anyone after all a sneak peak is a look at what is to come and then let people decide if it's something they want. Doesn't matter if it's an added mission or an added expasion if a pre-order is paid for the key for it should be honored regardless of level. And so what if I have all the campains before even 1 is complete I can afford it so get them when they're released and play when I can. That way I have no worries about not having it when one is complete I can immediately move on but was really looking forward to this sneak peak weekend. Oh well such is life I guess.
Arkantos
It's a sneak peak for an expansion for level 20 characters.
Either get to level 20 or don't complain, what ANet is doing is fine and they won't change it.

GlassShardx
The answer is sorta simple. You can't participate in the preview weekend, because you won't survive long with a level 14 character. GWEN is designed to be an expansion for level 20 characters, so its difficulty is set around that. Imagine the complaints that would pop up if it was open to everyone even the low levels. People would complain its too hard and they can't beat a certain mission, they'd say its unfair and needs to be fixed, but in the end, its not the game that is the problem, or the developers, its sorta just your expectations.
Complaining that you can't join in on content that is built for level 20s, is like having a character run to Lion's Arch at level 1, then complaining that the area is too hard. If you don't have the time to attain a 20, then there will always be content unavailable to you, and I'm sure you must understand that, since you're not complaining about the elite missions such as DoA being unfair to people under level 20.

Omniclasm
I'm actually confused why you would buy a new campaign? You couldn't make it far in Factions at around level 14, and you wouldn't make it that far through Nightfall at level 14. You still have SOOO much of the game to explore and complete. The expansion isn't meant for you. Expansions are to give people that have done everything more content, you have done very little, and still have about 90% of the original campaigns to complete.

why is it such a big deal when you have barely even seen what there is to see in what you have allready?
for the sake of argument lests say you got to check out the prevue weekend. how woudl that effect you? you wouldnt be able to use it when it comes out anyway. You are complaining abuot contennt you wont ever use anyway, you still have like 90% to beat with yout other games still.
not to mention by the time you get to the the right level to enter the game will probably have a lower price.
this isnt at all unfair to GW gamers, you just are upset that you bought something without knowing enough about it first.

They made it perfectly clear from the beginning that the game is meant for players whom are already level 20, that's the level the content is made for, so why would it be any different for the preview weekend? The preview weekend takes you into places where you'll need to be level 20 to do anything. You wouldn't get past the first explorable area at level 14.
It's not difficult getting to level 20, at all. In fact, you'd be that much closer to level 20 if you had spent your time in-game instead of complaining about something as silly as "my level 14 character can't access level 20 content."

LumpOfCole
If you bought all 3 campaigns, that means you bought Factions. Assuming you're at least in Lion's Arch, it should take about a week even for a slow player to get from 14-20 in Factions
arcanemacabre
Yeah, if I were you, I wouldn't have purchased any more campaigns after the first one until I've been able to at the very least get halfway through. That's nice that you want to try and enjoy all the games, but it seems like you time is limiting you to barely one of them. Anet surely isn't forcing you to purchase all their campaigns/expansions.
Besides, as people have mentioned, they clearly stated it was entirely level 20 content. If you missed that, that is your fault, not theirs.

Oofus
Why would you buy a total of 6 accounts and not even get a single character to 20? Somehow I find that remarkably difficult to believe. It makes no sense. You say you bought them for each of your computers, yet a single cd can be loaded on to any number of computers, once installed the cd is not needed to play the game. So your 1st point is rather silly and unbelievable. As to your 2nd point of not having a single level 20 in the 2.5 years since the original beta you profess to have bought, I find that equally as unbelievable. A character can attain level 20 in a matter of a few hours of play quit frankly. Level 20 is the beginning of the game, and I fail to see how you can not, in 2.5 years, have reached that smallest of milestones. I am in my late 30s, have a wife, a teenage daughter, a lucrative career, and am constantly retuning to university for additional education on top of the MS and BS I already have, yet I have completed all 3 chapters with little effort and even managed to amass a modest fortune along the way. So, to be honest, I find your entire "rant" difficult to swallow and even more difficult to believe.
DarthFlesh
i have all 3 campaigns too, and i am playng this weekend on eotn, , besides, if you bought pre order you should had known is for high lvl characters, and besides, man, who cares??, you are just playng...what, 1 week from release?, isnt liek if you dont play this weekend you are gonna die -.-'', besides even if you only played liek 1 hour every month, its still enought to get ya to lvl 20, in less than 10 hours with the easiness of this game thou
reverse_oreo
im with oofus here...that is just moronic... Buy one account and play that. Lvl 20 can be reached in NF in little over 3 hours.
Matfei
To the OP: I understand that you're frustrated, but perhaps you should focus on a single character, enjoy all the campaign content and, duly have access to EotN content, before moving on to another character.
With such little time on your hands one or two characters is all that is really needed for maximum game enjoyment.

tox_169
To the OP: I can understand how you can have a non-max level character after all this time. After all, you've described a very hectic work schedule, and GW isn't high on your list of "must-do" things in life, i.e. go hardcore and .
Kind of sucks how you overlooked the requirement for a character to be level 20, and empathize with your being frustrated that you can't participate in this Sneak Peek Weekend. I guess this is exacerbated by local and alliance chat filled with wondrous tales of the sights and sounds of the Far Shiverpeaks. /turns alliance and guild chat off... But hey, we're all only human, we can miss reading some stuff
If you really want to participate this weekend, you can have your kids help you do the quests in Kaineng Center, there are lots there that give 1,500 to 3,000 exp as quest rewards. May take a couple of hours but you might be max level by that time, albeit lacking 30 attributes if you're a Tyrian character and just want to access GWEN.
But when all is said and done, this is just the preview. The game comes out in a week anyway.
I myself am not getting worked up missing out on the preview event as I've been asked to report for work today (Saturday) and maybe tomorrow too. I got my three-hour taste last night, and look forward to next week

wait did u mean you are buying the games for your 26 and 34 year old children if so tahts sad if not u still wasted your money and really i had to buy all my games starting from when i was 10 buying diablo 2 (i thought it was cool to get a m rated game 8 years before i was allowed to play it )
luminoire
this topic is incredibly hilarious.

Well in his defense he odds are did not know GWEN was high level. He may have thought it was just another expansion. Not everyone stays super active with the news. Hell a few of my guildies today were asking why they could not get into GWEN and it turned out no preorders.
Dr Strangelove
...why would you spend a truckload of money on a game you don't play? It takes maybe an hour or two to hit level 14, and a couple more to hit 20.

if you have the time to write that long ass post, go level up your character

Wait... u buy 3x Props, 2x Factions, 2x NF, 1 preorder Gwen. Then you buy each campaign another time for purposes still unclear to me. But still, you fail to get a lvl 20 character in the game? Nothing personal, but since when does buying a game make you a dedicated gamer of that game.
=HT=Ingram
Go into the desert and ascend. that will get you to lev 20 fast. peope offer runs there all the time... it only takes a little over an 2 hours to get a character up to level 20 that way. if you go NF or Cantha route you can do it in a day I would say, of nothing but playing the missions. THATS IT no side quests. Primaries and missions only on 1 character... Be at lev 20 in no time flat... Then you will have 2 days to play in GW:EN preview with that character...
WinterSnowblind
Go over to Factions quickly, do all of the quests around the Kaineng center and you'll be level 20 in no time. Sucks that you've missed out on this, but like has been said.. they made it very clear from the begining that this is for level 20's.
masta_yoda
why buy all the campaigns when u dont even have 1 level 20.., if its take u this long since beta prophecies, its probally gonna take you 20 years+ to finish all campaigns...

I can't tell if you're trolling or are genuinely ignorant.

If you want some help getting to level 20, I have a few minutes to spare this weekend and we'll get you there in under an hour.

Sorry you got jacked, that would be quite frustrating from your situation I bet. If you read this in time I should be able to help you get to level 20 in only a couple hours. PM me here at the board with your ingame name if you'd like help and I'll try to remember to check back here and message you in game.
*edit* Lots of good advice and offers for help above my post I see. My offer still stands as well if you want to PM me.

Thanks everyone for your offers of help and after an hour or so of sleep I'll take a few of you up on it.
Just to clarify something at over fifty I'm not ignorant a little nieve maybe but ignorant is just being rude. And when I started playing games and even first reading on the back of the first prophecies box I bought it stated it could only be put on one system other systems needed their own copies hence buying what I did as I have 2 desktops(my primary & a spare when my kids visit) and my laptop. I only found through talking to a tech on the phone yesterday that GW is not like most other games so I spent some money no big deal. Also at one time over a year ago I had some free time to play while away so had to buy an extra copy anyway for my laptop and then couldn't remember the password from my first pre-order and really wanted to play so started the 2nd account.
Now after talking to the tech guy I know a little more.
And yes in the security feild I'm in after 12 hours of work and 2 hours of traveling and living out of a suitcase in hotel rooms when you guys get to be my age I hope you can cope as well as I and my family do when I'm away for 3 and 4 months at a time. Remember I also have to add in staff briefings and sleep in the rest of the day as well so when working away from home not much time for much else but making sure my own site's server is looked after so GW is reserved for times like this weekend and if I'm lucky a few days at the begining of the week where I can get in some time playing for a bit.
And Oofus maybe if I worked 9 - 5 like you did I would have a character like your too but I don't work bankers hours and I'm very rarely home to enjoy the hours of play you get to enjoy. On top of working away from home I still have wifely things like housework, cooking, laundry and all the other things that men as babies say they don't know how or refuse to do for themselves when I'm home as well so with you having bankers hours you have the extra hours that I don't hence the 2.5 years it has taken me to get to the point I'm at now.
Give your wife a holiday and go to work for your 8 hours then come home and cook and clean and do the laundry and make sure your teenager has homework done and medical appointsments looked after and see how much time is left for gaming before you go to bed bud and then you'll taste my life but just remember my days are 4 hours longer then yours not counting briefings and travel time and I'm 20 nyears older then you.
I'd really like to see you do all that 20 years from now. I'm unbelievable. No I'm a worker.

Sorry, but if you're rarely home and rarely have time to play, a MMORPG really isn't for you. I'm not saying stop playing, I'm just saying that MMORPGs take free time to play, which apparently you don't have.
You have to understand you have to dedicate time to play these games, and you have to realize that the companies are trying their best to please the actual gamers, not the people who occasionally play.

I do understand where you're coming from, and I think even though they stated very clearly that this was an expansion exclusively for level 20 characters, they might have also added a note saying a level 20 character was required for play. Because people might think that while the content of the game is geared towards level 20's, you could still go in with your level 14 and at least take a look, even if you'd end up a pile of goo not long after.
Perhaps they could have given people with an extra character slot the option of creating a level 20 character for the preview weekend? As I recall, in beta weekends of the past they were able to make it that way, to test higher level skills out, so it doesn't seem like it would have been so difficult to do here. Then, after the weekend, the character reverts back to level 1. The only problem I could forsee is that unlike those weekends, where equipment/skills went away, in this one we actually keep what we earn. I think it would be unfair to all of us who have gotten our characters to level 20 if those who hadn't got the same benefits as we did. Perhaps if they could have worked it that characters made for that weekend event lost their stuff? But that seems like a lot of work.
That said, it was pretty clear to me that this was meant for level 20's, and I spent about 5 hours leveling up three more of my characters so that I could bring them into this. With Nightfall it's not really that difficult. It seems to me that if you'd read what GW:EN was all about, you'd have realized you'd need to do the same. Instead of spending time creating a bunch of low level characters you could have taken those few hours and leveled that level 14 you have instead, and then there wouldn't be a problem.

The OP purchased the preorder for GW:EN because he believed that he would be able to play the game during the pre-release weekend. The replies commenting/ criticising his gaming habits were quite redundant. While I agree that, for a level 14 character, the three campaigns offer an insane amount of content waiting to be explored, I’m not in the position to criticise a person for still wanting to buy the latest add-on, and you surely won’t hear Anet saying “don’t buy our addons until you’ve completed the other campaigns”.
The OP was ignorant to the fact that the expansion required level 20 characters – and frankly, there are quite a few sources out there that can mislead you. Here’s an example: if you go to Amazon and read through the game description, there is absolutely no word about the necessity of having a level 20 character to play GW:EN. Furthermore, here’s what they wrote regarding the pre-release:

Pre-order Guild Wars: Eye of the North and get:
* Access to the Sneak Peek Weekend that runs from August 24–26, 2007. You'll be able to log into the game and gain early access to Eye of the North.
* Three exclusive weapons for you or any Heroes you may meet during your adventures in the Eye of the North expansion—the Glacial Blade, the Hourglass Staff, and the Darksteel Longbow.
* Trilogy Trial: Access to all three Guild Wars games—Guild Wars, Guild Wars Factions, and Guild Wars Nightfall for 10 hours or 14 days, whichever comes first. Now if I had characters below level 20 and ordered the game based on Amazon’s description, I would have been just as disappointed as the OP. I would not have gotten what I was promised – though it would have been Amazon’s fault, not Anet’s.
To everyone who thought they had a reason to roll their eyes at another person's "n00bishness" while reading the OP’s post: give a person the benefit of a doubt before you label him/her an idiot.
Besides, not everyone has as much time on their hands to play this game up to the point where they’re experts, and not everyone is so familiar with the campaigns that they know how to level their characters up as quickly as possible (which certainly isn’t the most enjoyable way of playing through a campaign for the first time anyway).
Oh, and by the way: someone on this thread mentioned that they can get their NF character to level 20 in three hours. Care to post a detailed walkthrough on that? I’m quite intrigued (for various reasons).
