15k armor doesn't let me sink my daggers any further into a foe than my plain jane max armor, and it certainly doesn't protect me anymore from their daggers. So, why do so many people shell out an incredible 75K + cost of materials for this stuff? I mean, I went all the way through Factions and ended up with about 15K to spare on nonessentials, so 75K+ seems like an incredible price to pay just to look spiffy.
Maybe I'll look into the GWEN armor b/c it's mostly based on title rank, but I still don't find myself too enthusiastic about it.
Why all the crazy armor love?

People want to look good and show off. That's all there really is to it.

It's pretty easy to get gold. I have 300K+ in storage and I don't go out of my way looking for ways to make money, I sell drops and stuff that I get but don't go out of my way farming for them.
I figure if you like the look, and have money to spare go for it. If not, its like you said. It doesnt do anything deifferent.

Because it's sexy?
I have Primeval on my Dervish. You want to know why? Because the only other set I saw that I liked was Elonian, and that is absurdly plain and boring. But Primeval keeps your mind entertained as you watch all of the bones spin around with you and whatnot.

People play the game for various reasons and they buy armor/weapons for their own reasons. Why have a green item when a blue collector item does the same thing? Why fuss over the 1hp difference? It's because it matters to them whether or not it really makes that big of difference in game. As for armor, it's also for sense of accomplishment, vanity (my reason), etc. If you like something, the price won't be an issue if you have enough to spend on it.
GWEN armor will most likely be similar (remains to be seen). You'll need rare materials and normal materials plus gold (very likely but since nobody gotten to that rank yet). Only difference is that you have to spend time to do quests and spend time looking for NPC's that gives you bonuses after xx amount of kills. Oh forgot to mention this, but for some people that's on their way while doing quests since they enjoy going about every part of the map needlessly. Sorry, I think it's "grinding" but some won't see it that way. But that's the only way Anet can make this game longer than what it really is. It sure doesn't appear to be a lot of new content (map wise), but it's a genius idea to make people work for everything while they wait for GW2.
You may not agree with the way how others play, but everyone plays it there own ways. If the player is happy, then regardless of what they do that doesn't violate the user agreements with Anet, then Anet did a good job in making something enjoyable for their customer (the player).

15k armor is known as "vanity" or "prestige" armor. It's a different skin, hence the increased price.

Some of the 15k armors look better than their counterparts, that’s my only reason for getting them. My assassin has Vabbian because I think its the best of the bunch, while my ranger runs around in Krytan/old collectors for the same reason.

It looks pretty.
If you want the uber-Haxx armour to actually make you a stronger character... WoW beckons.
