I noticed it today while playing through the Eastern Front of GW:EN. Some Charr axe warrior was thwacking on my MM's Flesh Golem. Thats when it hit me, they use the same body model and animation. They even have little spikes on their legs, hehe. Hope someone else noticed this before me, Flesh Golems have been around since Factions.

These aren't the best representations, I suggest you try it out in game to fully see. A Charr is the same size as a level 26 flesh golem, and their bodies are extremely similar. I suppose it was just the reskin + boney spikes that threw everyone off.

Its actually closer to the warrior char, this is not the first, nor the last reskin that A-Net has done. Move on.

Such kind words. I hope you don't kiss your mother with that mouth.

Nice catch, Nevin. Never noticed that.

Right. Just like norns being reskins of humans.

Yawn, this is not sprite game where reskins were as simple as palette shift. Regardles of what you want to imply or think, a lot of work went to that model.

Using fine tuned bone structure from another model does nto save artist that much.

And anyone actually taking charr model and then modifying it ... well, it does not work that way bacause iut would be way, WAY much more work that working from scratch.

You could tell the flesh golem used the same animations as the axe charr from the way they swing their weapons. Charr hold an axe, but a flesh golem swings its entire bony arm, but the animation is indeed the same. The way the run is also similar.

It's actually easier to modify the model when only a few changes have to be made. Since the body "mass" and "shape" are generally the same, its easy to "chop off" all of the extra poly's and simply merge or fill those areas, then extrude spikes and such to create the other. It's when the mass or proportions of the character change that it is better to start over. :]

So, we've been running around with a dead char corpose this whole time? :P

Actually to much the stereotypical disregard of Guru forum goers, this thread was to praise Anet for one of it's best achievements. Everyone criticizes reskins and recycling models, yet one of the most well known minions that everyones seen on more then one account, is in fact a "dreaded reskin" that no one has noticed.

So, perhaps I should state my praise in this post, I underestimated the arrogance of users on this forum (Or perhaps GW:EN has just made them spiteful). Good Job Anet for a beautifully rebuilt model.

No, not at all.

Thou, oeople should be concenred about quality of model and its appeal, not with similarity to existing stuff.

Aka pointing out "Reskin" is pointless, unless result looks very bad ... which is not really case here.

I think he was posting it for the neato factor. It certainly didn't sound like a complaint. I think the others are complaining just to complain, or are jealous somewhat he has a keen eye and they didn't notice it. I don't really care, I think it's a nice find (out of interest sicne I like to see how they do things sometimes).

I think it's pretty neat you caught that and pretty interested. I don't find it cheesy at all.

EDIT: don't wanna egg on the stupid people complaining about his find that much.

It's not reskinned, it uses the same animation, and depending on your view that can be just as bad.

I think Nevins means "best re-used animation cycle"

Rigging, mesh, UV, texture, sound effects are all still new though.

The funny thing is, I never stated it was a reskin in any of my posts. Guru Members just see what they want to see I suppose. The only time I actually used reskin was when I used the term "dreaded reskin" quotes for sarcasm.

It doesn't look like a reskin, but more that both models use the same skeleton.
That's very common in games.
Skeletons and animation can be a pain in the butt to have to make.
They probably didn't want to go through the trouble of making them separately for just a minion.

I'm pretty sure Mallyx and the red simians use the same skeleton/animations too.

Interesting. Whichever methods they used, it does appear very original.

Actually, respectful appreciation and concern about quality generally lead to things like asking, "How is it done?" You take things apart, see how they fit, compare and contrast - and if you are dealing with something, as you suggest, of high quality there is no better way to give depth and meaning (i.e., a point) to your appreciation.

The OP made a clever observation about a clever re-use of a model.
