Well, they're called rangers in Guild Wars. All secondary professions are useful, but rangers are pretty solid as is - you probably won't use many skills from your secondary.
Most ranger builds use only 1 or 2 skills from their secondary class (if any).
I'd recommend playing, reading the list of builds stickied here and seeing what you like.

First, what's a hunter? For the sake of understanding, you are playing a ranger, and everyone will refer to your character as such. The ranger is very similar to the ritualist in that they are both multitasking type player/characters. The Ranger, once developed, can be the most valuable player on a team.
Fun to play is an understatement, imo. I love playing my ranger. You can see everything, from the kiting monks, to the next group of monsters coming over the far hill when your team overly aggros. The place to learn to play the game from is more than likely best done from the midline, which the ranger is king of the midline, imo.
R/E has a few builds using Conjure enchantments to bolster damage output of the ranger to make up for the lack of DPS(Damage per Second), yet this is just the tip of the iceberg of ranger builds. Thumper builds are fun to play as well, but the bow will always be your friend.

rangers dont really need a 2nd profession they have solid builds without needing 2ndary skills...monk is probably a good option...just for a reusable rez skill like [skill]rebirth[/skill]
love playing my ranger, primary char. over 1000h of play time ^^
