IMO level 2 is a little too early because you don't really learn as much as you can in Pre at that level. I recommend between 5 and 7 if you're new. That way you can explore pre-searing and get all the free skills you can get (you can get every skill in Pre searing in post, but it'll cost money for some of them).
Squishy ftw
I would say somewhere between lvl 5-10. Just dont rush pre, especially if you're new. You can get some more skills and learn basic game tactics.

If it's your first time playing and you do all the quests, it's pretty easy to hit L8 without trying. That's the lowest I remember having any of my characters leaving Pre-Searing. The latest was L13, since I had intended to leave that one in pre :P

I couldn't figure out how to get more exp a little into level 8. Is the only place to get exp beyond the gate?
My Green Storage
Yea North of the Wall will let you meet level 8 charr and level 10 charr bosses.

Well im level 6 now and i know i can get 7 just through quests. Should i stay and grind a bit to get higher? This is my first character after a break i had. So i can still remember quite alot despite having not played for a year and a bit lol

Stay in Pre until you finished getting all the skills for your primiary and secondary profession. You might as well quest around a bit.

level 7-8 is good. and all the skills.

Don't rush. Lvl 8 would be nice, or lvl 10 if you go to hunt some charr in the northlands.

It's possible to get to level 9 without going north of the wall; go to Wizard's Folly and focus on killing ice elementals and bears. It'll take a while to hit level 9 there, but it's quite possible.
Take all the time you need in pre. Go questing, pick up the free skills, earn some money (this point is useful as you'll need to buy a new set of armor as soon as you get to post)... But most importantly, get used to your character and how your chosen profession works. Once you're comfortable with playing with your new character, then you can consider going to post and getting on with the story.
