Advice for killing the great destroyer (Spoilers)
MercenaryKnight
I am trying to do it with hero/hench and currently have 2 savannah heat nukers with meteorshower and then ranger interrupter to get rid of most of the destroyers skills. But he still whips my butt since I only have mehnlo and lina as healers and then I take cynn and interrupt hero to try and get the rest of his skills.
I am a mesmer and currently dunno what i'm supposed to bring so I brought signet of illusions and tried summoning the monsters which don't really help any.
I guess I could go with a degen build instead (used to just use ineptitude).
Any advice on this?

This is making no sense. I know I did that master's quest with the great dwarf armor spell. Because I got the black powder mine skill. But for some reason I don't have the great dwarf armor in my skill list.
I don't understand how I can have 1 skill and not the other when I did the other quest already. I think I did it during the preview.
Also, what are some good water ele builds seeing as how i've never used them before?

The key point in this fight is keeping the Great Destroyer solo. Clear the area around him, always interrupt Call, but don't bother interrupting anything else - Enraged Blast is more dangerous than, for instance, Lava Blast. If you get the boss alone, his damage is easily manageable by two monks, and you just beat on him with traditional warrior/nukers until he dies. In reality, he's easier than some of the dungeon bonuses.

Paragon ftw. With H/H only and no PVE-only skills, I went as an air ele (weakness and blind, mostly), with MoW as a blood necro with Spoil Victor and some touch skills, Norgu as dom mes with interrupts (I would have taken Gwen instead, but I haven't pimped her out yet with runes, etc. ), and my not-so-secret weapon: General Morgahn as a motivation party support paragon with Cautery Signet...FTW!! He was the best, no doubt the deciding factor. We were degening fast by the end from the burning, despite Morgahn's efforts, no doubt, but we were clearly out-damaging the Destroyer and the win was not *really* in doubt (much ).

i just setup a broadhead arrow / daze ranger. worked good for me. but like others have said the fire elem builds arnt exactly perfect setups for destroyers.. ( i fell victim to this aswell)

I don't understand how I can have 1 skill and not the other when I did the other quest already. I think I did it during the preview. Yeah, I made a thread about how quests we did during the preview now give more skills in actual GWEN, ripping us off from getting those skills. Gaile said that they know the problem is there and are working on it.

go in kill destroyers then go back and regen until you get to the destroyer then just go there and put damage out.

My team beat him with interrupters.

I dumped my two ele's for a SV blood nec (Liv) and a SS curse nec (Master) plus a Dunkoro with extinguish and LoD. Two monk Henchies rounded out the group.
I took all interrupts off my heroes, and made myself a mes secondary (added Cry of Frustration and Leech Sig). I only interrupted "Call".
Also, I didn't really worry about the lava/dry land thing. He eventually disintegrates all land into lava anyway. If you can't fight while standing in the Lava, you won't beat him in the end.

Use Ogden (or any monk hero) with just two skills enabled: Light of Deliverance and Healing Whisper. Bring Mhenlo for a second LoD, and Lina for all protection needs. Don't bringing any condition countering skills as they're a complete waste of energy; instead, heal through the burning. For the remaining slots, do whatever you want. GuildWiki has lots of suggestions. (In fact, in the future always check the wiki before asking on a forum. Half the responders here are just parroting what the wiki says anyhow.)
Unidimention
I use touch ranger to kill great destroyer. I flag my monk and henchs on the solid ground, then I kill the foes individually. After the cleaning the foes, I aggro the great destroyer close to the solid ground that the monk can heal me. Then I use the touch skills to kill him, I only interrupt him when he is going to summon more destroyers. Have done it less than 2 mins.

Well I did it (then helped another group with pain inverter). It is very easy with that skill. I dunno which skill is the one where he takes damage on it but just use it right as he's about to hurt you and bam like 1/3rd of his health goes away.
Glad to see signet of illusions can be a great elite for mesmers.

I beaten him with Life barrier Monk outside the Lava pit with extinguish there and there, 2 LoD Monks, SV Necro, Warrior (I used cold dmg), 2 eles and a mesmer, cakewalk imo.

I touch rangered it myself, and I had a few heroes with Grenth's Balance. He went down so fast I thought there *had* to be more fight afterward.

Interrupts?! Obviously some people don't pay attention to the tips given in the dialogs during the mission...
When you interrupt him you get hit with enraged blast...which knocks down everyone within earshot and hits them for 115 damage.
The only skills you should interrupt are Call of Destruction and Lava Wave...the rest you can ignore.
Destroyers (and most likely the great destroyer himself) are most resistant to fire damage (after all they love the lava) and somewhat resistant to earth damage (lava....earth...pretty close)....so your eles should be water or air eles.
I beat him using me as a Poison Interrupt ranger (selective interrupts as mentioned above) with Greater Conflagration and Winter, Vekk/Sousuke/Zhed as Sandstorm Ele with ward of stability, Lina, Mhenlo, Herta, and Talon.

Meh, used the same team build we did all of GW:EN (which isn't exactly all that great, but it works), and we died the first try, though we had him down to about 10% life. Figured we were taking too much damage and burning too much, so removed Pyre and put in another monk - an additional LoD monk. That was all that was needed.
I admit, The Great Destroyer is tough, but he kills quick and he dies quick - which means it's a short battle either way. I'm fine with that, though it did seem kinda anti-climatic. Just meh.

Guildwiki tip:
Interrupting the Destroyer causes it to use Enraged Blast, causing devastating AoE damage. Choose what to interrupt carefully. Call of Destruction is the most devastating skill and may be the only one worth interrupting.
That does the following:
When interrupted, the Great Destroyer becomes enraged and emits a blast of Energy that knocks down all foes within earshot and deals 115 damage.
So try to be careful what you interrupt.

Killed him with
W (me), 2x Lod Mo heroes, 1x P hero (with Never Surrender), Mhenlo, Lina, Lo Sha, Herta.
Lots of healing here, so you can stay alive forever. Celan the room, then attack the boss. Do not care about spawns, juste keep attacking the boss.

Do you have to beat this boss to reach the crafters each time like previous games? I have not made it this far yet, but wanted to know if I should stock up on mats before fighting him.

No, the crafters are in the Central Transfer Chamber (outpost you start the mission from).
Abedeus
You have that much problem with one easy boss? Imo Abaddon>Shiro>Lich>Destroyer.
Just use Shelter + LoD, dont care about condition removals. Get a Mesmer with Pain Inverter and Signet of Illusions to max out dmg, Zho with interrupts and Spoil Victor necro. This way Destroyer is interrupted, he deals only 40-60 dmg due to Shelter (yeah, spirit will die quite often - use spirit lord or soul twisting), while dealing himself A LOT dmg from Pain Inventer + Spoil Victor. After 5 minutes he was dead, and I was able to not choose any of those crappy Droknar weapons. I mean, +20% ench mod for all casters? Damn...

I did it with hero / hench. Just take your monk heroes with Restore Condition / Extinguish and you'll be fine.

I hope This helps this team build has helped me complete this task
Spoil Victor Or spitful Sprit Worked a treat On Him Also Poison arrow Is also very effective On distroyers.
Its also a good idea To equip Blood ritual On your monks so set their 2nd to necromancer so they can top up energy when they are low as the constant healing has huge impact on energy then just pummel him and interupt him
we had in our team
3 monks 2 healer 1 prot with Shield of regeneration and extinguish (Heros) All With BR
2 necromancers 1 Sv 1 BIP ( Heros )
3 Rangers (myself Included And a Guildy) 2 Interupters 1 Poison with Interupt
Oh yeah One last thing set your monks to Avoid Combat as they only focus on healing and let the rangers and the sv necro do the damage.
I Hope this helps.

Just beat it last night. Team setup I had was this:
My E/Me (12 water, 12 energy, 3 Insp + runes) - Mantra of Flame, Frigid Armor, AoR, Water Attunement, Shatterstone, Vaperblade, Glowing Ice, Shardstorm
Dunkoro set as Mo/E (11 heal, 10 divine, 10 water + runes) - Frigid Armor, LoD, Dwayna's Kiss, Words of Comfort, Healing Breeze*, Vigorous Spirit, Heaven's Delight, Rez Sig
Acolyte Jin set as R/E (11 Mark, 10 Expert, 10 water + runes) - Frigid Armor, Conjure Frost, RtW, Distracting Shot, Savage Shot, Magebane Shot, Needling Shot, Rez sig.
Livia set as N/E (12 blood, 10 water, 8 soul + runes) - Frigid Armor, Awaken the Blood, Grenth's Balance, Well of Blood, Vamp Gaze, Life Siphon, Lifebane Strike, Rez Sig
Mhenlo
Lina
Herta
Zho
* Healing Breeze seemed useful here to counter burning on henchies even with the less-than-perfect hero AI issues in handling this skill.
10 ranks in Water magic for each hero is enough to allow them to keep Frigid Armor in place continually. I opted to use rez sigs, since the battle is fast and there really isn't time to waste with a hard rez.
I killed only the destroyers met on the direct path to the Great Destroyer. After defeating each of them, I would then pin the party on the corpse, and Livia would activate Well of Blood at that spot. Since there were no melee characters, the Great Destroyer eventually started moving toward the party...though somewhat slowly due to the water hexes. Energy didn't seem to be a problem. The party was never in any real danger, and at worst there may have been 1 or 2 characters that momentarily dropped below 50% health during the battle before quickly being healed up.
Note - the ranger hero build I used could probably be improved by having Disrupting Shot, but I haven't unlocked it yet.

Pain Inverter + Spoil Victor almost insta killed him. And yes, signet of illusions works with any spell, including pve spells.
