Birth of the Sylvari? >.> [Spoilers]

Warning spoiler for the Eye of the North plot ahead !!
Well I can't say I was expecting much of the emergence of the Sylvari in Eye of the North, I knew there was no hope of a Sylvari hero, since there was so little mention of them in comparison to the other races being introduced, but the actuality of their appearance in Eye of the North was more disappointing than I had counted on. Honestly, I expected the Sylvari to, perhaps literally, rise from the ashes of the Great Destroyer as a symbol of new peace. What I got instead was not even a shot of a Sylvari, just a glowing trunk slowly expand, explained in what I believe was the most vague way linguistically possible. Does anyone have any guesses as to what role these Sylvari will actually be playing in the upcoming Guild Wars 2, since there's so little information on them it's a wonder we're even aware of their existance? I am interested in the Sylvari, they seem to have the potential to add a subtle new twist to the traditional Guild Wars approach, but no one has any way of knowing yet if they can make use of that potential.

I actually managed to find that tree. If you go to the South-West part of Arbor Bay, you will find a large amount of Wind Riders patrolling around a small island. The tree is in the middle of that island.
Hou Lifu
Yeah, it was a pretty big let-down but hey, that's ANet's specialty right? :P

Yeah lol, I know about that tree too, I farmed Asura faction in Arbor Bay (turns out there's exactly 400 monsters) repeatedly in order to get my Spectacles. It was quite pretty when I saw it but I was a bit confused. I just assumed it was a Kurzick-like decoration.

Ventari is actually there too .
Guildmaster Cain
Ventari is the one that actually planted the tree if you talk to him. Maybe he is the granddaddy of the Silvari...

On a whole I loved GW:EN but this was really dissapointing. ANET kept saying how we get to witness the birth of the Sylvari. They didn't release any info on them, I figured they wanted to keep it a secret. Looks like they just didnt bother including them at all :S
Sure it's a cool cliffhanger. But a 2 year at least wait, not to mention going back to the tree, nothing has changed.

The point is GW:EN was meant to be a introduction and tie-in for GW2... we have meet the Norn, the Charr and the Arusa, but no sign of the Sylvari???
kaheiyeh
I was kinda disappointed to at the ending. I thought maybe a Sylvari would pop out of the tree or something but all we see is a tree wobbling which, to a person who does not know about a new race, would find it wierd.
Onarik Amrak
If you didn't actually hear about the Sylvari before playing the game, you'd see that tree and just go "WTF?"
That little grove with Ventari and the tree is pretty cool though.

Well at least we didnt get the whole Dwarf = Sylvari thing. I liked the ending and didnt really expect anything big for the Sylvari. It could of been alot worse - perhaps showing a random Sylvari walk onto the screen without explanation as to where it came from. I'm glad we still have one mysterious race.

I think the words above my avatar show my reaction when I saw it, considering they hyped it up that we would "witness the birth of a new race." Oh well, as long as they are cool in GW2 I will be happy.
RTSFirebat
I really hope they have a mini SF style expansion planned. I mean why is did they add a black island to the top left hand of the map? Surely there must be a purpose for it being there?
But come on a tree? It's like they got lazy at the end

Fr_3_aK
Anyone dropped a Light of Deldrimor near the tree? It'd be cool if they appeared when u do it. If not Anet should make it so that happens. fark... too many ppl wanna actually see a Sylvari and talk to one.

There are lots of pretty trees in GW..... But i still havn't seen "the birth of a new race"...

I was very disappointed that they even decided to include Sylvari at all, i have a real dislike for the penis-enlarger races that pop up in every game, and i suspect this is exactly what the Sylvari will be. Sompthing like the Night Elves in WoW (roleplayers especially might know what i mean).

That little grove with Ventari and the tree is pretty cool though. Exactly why this was such a failure. If you don't read up on fansites/aren't hardcore, this "new race" is a complete throwaway and means nothing.

I think it will change with time. As in when it gets closer to the launch of GW2 they will change the tree. Making it seem as though actual time was needed for the new race to be born. And finally letting them out before GW2 launch. Or maybe thats just me hoping

yea i was hyped for that but well wateva im sure itll work eventually
tho on a side tangent i loved how they imply (all speculation on my part now) that dragons are coming back in gw2, cos currently gw is lacking dragons and an elvish-like race, that while generic are still kul sooooooo yea cant wait to see more of this =)

Am I the only one, for some reason, feels the sylvari will be evil? Like, they look innocent, but so does the chick before the blade slips into your ribcage.
I'm not going near that tree unless I have napalm on me >:E

I do agree with you on the fact that there's far too many races in classic RP games for the sole purpose of being a Barbie Doll. Being a girl myself, it's very offensive seeing scantily clad girls with overactive thyroids prance around my computer screen to the enjoyment of all of my male fellow players (I imagine it's the same sensation one would feel walking into a strip club). However, I like the idea of the Sylvari in this case, only because it adds frailty to a character that the game didn't really previously have. The "traditional Guild Wars approach" that I mentioned I basically see as war-mongering iron clad "heroes" with inconcievable strength in comparison to normal human standards. Mind you I respect that more than pure fairy tale, but adding a certain fairy tale element to the game in very small doses would be interesting at least, maybe even refreshing.

I'm not going near that tree unless I have napalm on me >:E Lol, I read somewhere official, though unfortunatley I don't remember where, so I can't cite it, that the Sylvari were absolutely pure nature spirits, the symbol of child-like innocence, completely lacking the corruption of sadness, hatred, or suspicion.

I was disappointed too. I've decided my "main" character in Guild Wars 2 is going to be a sylvari. I was looking forward to seeing it. And then I see a tree...okay...lol Someone said that we fought The Great Destroyer, and what's the opposite of destruction? Creation. So perhaps the sylvari will be a new creation after the destroyer is dead. I like that idea, so that might be what they're planning.

That little grove with Ventari and the tree is pretty cool though. D: I knew of the Sylvari and forgot about them, saw the tree, and was like, "WOW SO AMAZING A TREE! ... I'm Kurzick and I don't understand this. >>"

That was my reaction too.
A tree waggle is not what I expected.

I thought the entire final cutscene was a bit weak. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely loved the rest of EotN (my only other qualm about the game would be that there was not enough content in the Charr homelands). But to have this ending after I killed the Great Destroyer is just a bit disappointing. It would have been fine as an epilogue sort of thing. But I feel that they should have had some sort of cutscene with some character interaction or something.
Clord
If that tree grow speed like typical trees in real world, it means that even 100 years after tree started grow, it becomes quite big.
WHen tree grow enough, it create or start create new race.

I agree. I didn't mind not seeing the Sylvari, because I didn't expect to, but the whole end seemed a little too short.

Yeah I agree as well, I was really disappointed after seeing it. I think it may have helped to give the cutscene some light if, at the point in the monologue where it stated "We need the greatest heroes of all time, the children of the heroes." or something like that, they should have cut to just the smallest glimmer of a shot of GW2, like different races stepping into view, ideally from tests from the actual game but not necessarily. But, I suppose that's a little too much to ask...

o I thought they are the descendants of the tree-hangers... i mean Kurzick lol

Who knows, theres that island in the northwest section, and a lot of other unexplored land. Maybe if we are lucky there will be bonus content.

Hope the Sylvarians have good looking people... not like the guy in the 'Green Giant' corn can
