i used to get that same message until i moved a ton of stuff to the other hard drive.
it needs a lot more defragmented free space than you would believe not simply free space but defraged free space as well.
luckily my defragger will defrag the free space as well as the drive or a single file

Don't be overzealous with defragmentation. A little bit of fragmentation is not a problem at all. As long as it doesn't go into the thousands you won't feel the slightest difference. Also, with every game update, every time the client downloads some content, your GW files will very likely become fragmented again anyway.
For the cleanest possible installation, you can try the following:
1. Install the game
2. Perform a "-image" download of all game content.
3. Copy the whole game folder to a different media like a DVD-/+R or other hard drive.
4. Delete the GW folder
5. Defragment the hard drive
6. copy the GW folder back to where it was (if you used a DVD-/+R, check read/write permissions: files copied from a read-only medium will be set to read-only, too)
Depending on what else you've got on your hard disk, you may still have some fragmentation, but that's the best you can get without the use of 3rd party software. There are some defragmentation programs that are a lot better than what comes with Windows, but those programs usually cost money. But as said, before: As soon as the next update is released, all that will be for naught.

I've found O&O Defrag much more more effective than the defragmentation tool Windows comes with. Given enough time it can defrag almost any partition completely, and it often actually takes less time to do this than the Windows tool.
I think there's a free 60 day trial available without registering the software.

Check out a thread in this section regarding lag. I believe it ios stickied. There is a technique regarding the "contig" command for windows. There is a small file to download too. It is specifically designed to defrag single files.

It was a lack of space on my hard drive preventing the defrag. If you have a 20 gig hd or less it wont matter what the % of free space is left, the gw.data file is massively huge. AS a make shift fix burn the .dat file to a dvd and delete it then defrag the hd till it can't defrag anymore. restore the .dat from the dvd and defrag again. hope this helps.

Hi all,
I am new here, nice forum
Wanted to vote for my choice of a defragger, i use DKPro 2007 on my drives which is doing a great job of keeping the fragmentation levels from raising their head. I've also noticed that its better to defrag before the drive runs out of space or before it gets too fragmented, to save time and keep the system smooth.
