Channeling, explain please?

Ok, I've been playing monk for awhile, and in PvE, I still cannot figure out why people would choose to use this, when you have to be near enemies, putting you into danger, just to squeeze some energy out, when GoLE keeps you safe from battle, well, safer, and you still are able to manage energy, and from what I've seen, the energy from Channeling doesn't make up for the risk I have to put myself at to gain the energy.

So, could someone please explain the reasoning behind choosing this potentially dangerous skill, instead of a safer one, say, GoLE?

Now, I'm not saying it's bad, I just don't understand why people would choose this in a PvE environment. I somewhat understand it's PvP usage, as things are slightly more crapped, and no 500 damage spikes from level 28 foes.

There are a lot of bad builds out in pve that people pick up from observer.

I never used it myself though, but that's the reasoning as I understand it.

GolE is only good with skills that have a high energy cost, like Shield of Deflection and Spirit bond.

Healing breeze is an exception, because you should never, ever bring that.

Channeling is good with a lot of 5e skills on your bar, because you'll always get about 2 energy from some random monsters hitting on you, making your spells only cost ~3 energy.

Channeling, despite how good it is in PvP, promotes pretty bad positioning. If you go on obs mode, you'll see monks sitting ontop of the altar in halls spamming LoD and RoF and gaining 6 energy per cast. However, they're right in the midst of their enemies, none of which can deal a 182 damage lightning orb into their face.

In Pve....I wouldn't use it. The bad positioning can be a bit worse in PvE. Just stick with GoLE. It's safer....

Channeling is often seen in PvE among spam-builds. Those types bring several fast-spammable skills (1 sec or less cast, 5-10 sec max recharge) which only cost 5e each.
These are usually starting monks, for which the monking itself is hard enough and dont want to bother about their energy control to much as well. Because of this, MoR is also on the bars of these people 8/10 times.

Once the experience kicks in, the more stable and challenging builds start comming in such as glyph of renewal/divine spirit with low energy casts, and then they slowly grow up to use the monk-elites and rely on the smaller energy control such as GolE or just their own regen.

This also explains the strength of channeling, as in the start the other players usually arent the top as well, getting you much more often agro'd then in any normal case. In the higher levels (when the monks start using different builds such as renewal/divine) the rest of the team also improves making the use of channeling far less effective.

The exeption however is when the team runs an elemental build with spirits (i.e. winter) which forces the monk to use an inspiration-magic mantra. In these cases some monks do choose to pick channeling as well, just in case they are not the target (causing the mantra to not provide any energy).

They're probably ripped off builds on HoH. Why is it used in HoH? Because you can have up to 18 foes (2 teams of 8 +2 Ghostly Heroes) around the middle. Of course, you won't get the benefit on 18 Energy, but it's possible to get 5 or more Energy.

Energy Management skills in PvE... This should help.

I put channeling, p-drain, sometimes leech sig on hero monks. I'm not sure if they can use GoLE properly.

Otherwise, you'd find that quite a few big bad scary things with large weapons are swinging at backlines, in which case Channeling works great.
