Vertical Sync Weirdness

Hi,

My computer is easily capable of 200FPS in a quiet area. My Refresh rate is set to 85Hz (im using the correct monitor driver and recommended refresh rates).
It's a 20" CRT monitor. My res is 1280x960.

When i turn on vert sync my FPS goes to 60. Never goes over it.

Any tips on what's going on?

It's nothing to worry about. When you have V-sync on, it will cap the FPS at 60.

You shouldn't notice anything past 60 anyway, and it's worth it to avoid tearing.

So everyone is capped to 60? My understanding is it was meant to match your refresh rate. I could be wrong.

I just read this very interesting article on Triple Buffering which doesnt necessarily help you out but maybe it will?

http://www.gamecritics.com/triple-bu...mance-for-free

I have been having some pretty low framerates lately and I think its because of the V-sync as well, at times my FPS will be unable to keep up with the refresh rate of my monitor and apparently it drops your FPS in order to stay synced. So this article describes it and Im going to try this when I get home using a DirectX override to force triple buffering on a directx game (which apparently doesnt support triple buffering unless you override it with a 3rd party app)

I dont think this will break the EULA as its a DirectX override and not a GW.exe override? but Im not really sure

The DVI interface is capped at 60FPS to protect LCD-monitors from premature pixel deaths. Unlike CRT's, pixels on an LCD have a finite number of possible color switches. As a result, the higher you run the vertical refresh, the faster you hit this switching limit (resulting in bad pixels).

LCD's do not need > 60hz vertical refresh rates because LCD pixels do not fade after a refresh strobe. They remain the same color / luminance until told switch to a new color mode. Older CRT pixels immediately started fading after each strobe cycle, thereby requiring higher vertical refresh rates to avoid image flicker.

If you're going thru a DVI video port, then your FPS will be capped at 60hz. This is not a problem -- it is working as intended. However, V-Sync will still prevent image tearing.

The DVI interface is NOT capped at 60 FPS; it's possible to do at least 75 Hz with 1280x1024 while staying in a single DVI link's bandwidth spec. This depends on your monitor's ability to handle such a signal, and your video card's ability to produce it. With dual DVI even higher refresh rates may be possible at certain resolutions, though monitors that can handle those are likely very expensive niche hardware.

IF this actually happens with modern LCD monitors it is _completely_ irrelevant compared to the expected lifetime of the screen's cold cathode backlight.

I wrote my last post in a rush and thought LCD's were being discussed. Serves me right for posting in a hurry before running errands
