Well the same happend to my white tiger because i used the let the pet kill all the baddies method untill lvl 11 then cba going the rest and leveled it in urgoz ^^. being dead seems to break the eveloutions. But ive also heard that that piticular pet has a bug stopping it from becoming dire, you are not alone anyway...

i've been leveling this one by killing minotaurs, and it hasnt died much, lvl 17 aswell now, dam bugs

My Rainbow Phoenix has the same problem.
He didn't evolve at level 15 and stayed aggressive. Now he is level 20 and aggressive.
I leveled him to level 15 by killing the mergoyles in scoundrel's rise, outside of gates of kryta. He didn't die and did nearly all the damage.
After he became level 15 and didnt evolve further, I continued to death level him via wurms.

is there much difference between an agressive and dire pet
R1p70r
Aggressive has -30 Hp, +x% damage (I have forgotten the number, sorry.)
Dire has -60hp, +2x% damage (Twice that of aggressive.)
Dire has -60hp, +2x% damage (Twice that of aggressive.)

Don't feel to bad, i tried with 21 of those Rainbow Phoenix birds, none became dire. The most if I got was aggressive, had maybe 4 or 5, that turned Elder. I did send an e-mail to Anet using their Help Center. I had a reply after a few days. After reading, didnt feel any better about it, but, this is what it had to say:

I have been training a White Wolf to Elder the last 2 days.
I've trained it to aggressive manually till halfway lvl 11 (something like halfway at least). Then i took it on a HM tombs run to make it evolve on a Hearty way and let it level till it was 14 (didn't get over 14 as we cleared tombs before it levelled).
I then continued to kill some Hydras and my pet died frequently. Yet my pet is still aggressive.
My opinion is that you may have been doing something wrong.
Also don't forget to type /petname once he gets lvl 15.
Sometimes the game doesn't register the evolutionary stage by changing the prefix.

There must be something wrong with Mountain Eagles also (considering it's just a reskin of the phoenix). I've tried two times to death level the eagle to Dire and both turned out unevolved (just plain Mountain Eagle). I've death leveled a polar bear for my hero the exact same way and it turned out dire.

I wanted a dire Wolf but got a hearty one instead I lvl mine up in Spearhead Park.
