can a ranger have more than one pet? if so, how is it done?

No, only one pet at a time for the Ranger. Sorry.

If you ever want to switch pets, you can turn your old one in to a tamer. They're located in various places around each chapter.

how do i do that/where do i go? right now i'm by the statue of melandru in regent valley. i want to get rid of my level 3 wolf and get one of melandru's stalkers...

you want a stalker rather than a wolf??? Well there is only one melandru stalker so I guess it pretty rare. Though i definitively rather go with wolf instead of course I have a white tiger.

The tamer is right next to the guy who gave you the quest to get the pet.
