Why does guru search SUCK?
Fox Reeveheart
I can't use this thing to save my life.
I made a thread last night called "leveling an aggressive pet" and I can't find it! So I decide to use search. It was supposedly supposed to give me results but nothing shows up after the stupid blue dog fills up a few times. But there is the little icons to show that there are a few pages I could go to of relevancy despite no findings are shown at all.
I go to advanced search... WHAT THE HECK? I don't see anything advanced about it. Wheres the search where I could do a check based on someone's name like myself so I can find all the threads started by me? All it shown was relevancy and thread start time.
Somebody help me out here I hate this search so much and it has always been a pain. I've held my tongue on this long enough as this is not the first time I had to complain to myself how horrible the search is here.
Is there any way I can find MY threads?

It's not that it sucks, but the sheer amount of trafic on this web site and the sheer number of users / and posts almost kill this site constantly.
What I would do is use google caching / index to do search. Guru search use to be set up this way.
I am glad to see the "use search" mantra has gone away.

Been like that ever since Guru exploded in size and could no longer handle the server strain from everyone. Searching was one of the functions that got the axe, and as a result we now have the lesser search function that exists today.
Wrath Of Dragons
hopefuly, the new servers coming will be able to handle enough to allow for search to come back. But i just dont know enough to say yes or no on it. We can hope, though. I really miss closing threads saying "use search". good times

Sorry, my fault. I moved it to Q&A, because it was more suited to that forum then Riverside. I was going to PM you, but I got caught up with something in Ventari's.
If you want to keep track of your threads, you have to subscribe to them.

If I make a post here, I usually bookmark it till I am done using it. It saves me the time of attempting to look for it, or even using the "search" function.

The vBulletin search queries the database at the time the search is initiated, and all current threads are available to 'find.'
However, external searches, such as Board Tracker, crawl the boards and create an index of threads, as I understand it, and that means that searches are not performed in real-time. A thread you just made will not be findable because it's not yet in the index.
I think. If I'm wrong here, I hope someone will correct me.

I made a 'wtb jormungand's thunder' thread. So I think, why don't I do a search to see if there's a 'wts jormungand's thunder' thread?
Well, a week later it still won't even find my wtb thread.
Utterly useless.

5 days, actually, but wow, boardtracker's slower than I remember it. I've been on a hiatus, so it's been a while since I've had to use either search.
It doesn't seem to retain apostrophes, or if it does, it's a bit weird about it.
Odder still, the indexing is definitely up to the 22nd, today, since I've gotten search results, but it looks like your thread simply wasn't caught by the crawler.
Or something?
There's a gaping hole in search results on threads created between certain dates, such as August 26th to September 16th, though that could just be my search. WTB is usually found daily, though, so that's unlikely.
Guess Google works a bit better here, because it at least pulls up;
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q... &btnG=Search
It shows an older version of the page, so you have to load it cached, and it'll highlight the thread in yellow. Click it, and you'll get out of the cached version of the page, and into the actual forum.
I'm sure I remember Board Tracking, while not working well, scraping just ahead of google search shortly after it was implemented. I wonder what's happened since then?

I still see moderators closing threads stating "please use search next time." I gotta laugh. Must be a cut/paste talking point to save time because we know search doesn't work well . . ..
Thank god for subscriptions to threads! Please don't let that fall to the wayside!

I've not seen anyone use that phrase in a while.
There is other ways to search, like browsing beyond the first page in each sub-forum.
The only sub-forum that is really hurt by a lack of search is Ventari's, because a sell thread can be moved back 10-15 pages within a matter of a day or 2. Like you said, subscribing to a thread solves that problem.
Guru archive network still works, for those that like to dig up really old threads.

Hopefully when the servers do finally upgrade, we can have the old search back from way back in 2005. It was a really good one.
As for the mods saying "use the search function", yeah thats most likely a copy paste. When I modded, I copy pasted my stuff to save myself the time of writing everything out over again, but thats the good thing about being a mod of Buy/Sell area. :P
