Found reason for bad lag & crashes

Guild wars does not like multiple cpu's by setting affinity on gw for 1 core cleared up all my problems.

They really need to look into multi-threading because there in the dark ages 99% of my computer customers have dual cores or better.

This is clearly not a global issue with dual cores, multiple cpu's, Hyperthreading, etc, as I have no such issues on my dual core machine. It must be some combination that includes multi-threading.

I run a dual core machine and have a ton of crashs....

Its hyperthreaded....

How did u set it up to run just 1? I know computers, but nothing like that. A guide would be great, thanks a ton, this might save me.

-Tiki

Do you sacrafice any performance by going to 1? Or is it ok.

See this post for how to set Guild Wars to only use one core/cpu. You have to do that every time you run it though.

I would suggest testing it with that method and if it helps use the method I describe here to make it permanent.

After you make it permanent, how do you UNDO it

That rocks...

Ill be doing this when I get home to play....thanks so much for the help. I hope it works...Im tired of the millions of crashs.

This runs GW single core while allowing everything else I do to run dual right? Should be...from my understanding, its just GW affected.

Well, there IS a reason I said you should test it the other way first.

But the setting is added into the gw.exe, so it can be removed by uninstalling and reinstalling (preferably moving the gw.dat file elsewhere first, and then moving it back afterwards to avoid downloading all the new content again).

That is correct.

The only thing that might be an issue is if the gw.exe loses the setting every time it updates or not - I haven't tested it and I don't know if the update process replaces gw.exe or merely patches it. You would have to work that out yourself.

If you are running a dual core AMD 64/FX/X2 processor, try using the AMD Dual Core Optimizer.

http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/...1_9706,00.html

Other than that, GW should fully support systems equipped with dual core processors (even though it doesn't take advantage of them).

If you're still having problems, there's a utility called imagecfg that can permanently set the process affinity of an executable to a single processor.

I DO NOT RECOMMEND USING THIS UNLESS YOU HAVE EXHAUSTED ALL OTHER OPTIONS, HAVE MADE BACKUPS OF ALL THE FILES YOU EDIT (GW.EXE) AND I ACCEPT ABSOLUTELY ZERO RESPONSIBILITY IF SHIT BLOWS UP IN YOUR FACE

http://www.robpol86.com/Pages/imagecfg.php

Once again: if you plan on using this, back up your Gw.exe.

I have a quad 6600 gw runs great on a single seperate core my cpu runs at 25% gw+winxp with max setting putting it on a core by itself improves performance

Need a util try this from toms hardware:

http://www.tomshardware.com/2004/05/...uck/index.html

Its great you can put this nifty util in your startup dir under programs it will autorun on bootup.

Damn, I THOUGHT that running my exe file forcing a single core to work would do it, no go...

This after I've prime95'ed stabilized my beast.

um here...

http://www.xfire.com/profile/omnistrata/

gaming rig is at the bottom...

It ran GW perfectly fine before GW:EN. Did they purposefully release a broken game too early?

Btw, the profile might not show it, but I'm using SLi 7600 GTs from Gigabyte [silent pipe ftw]

Everything is overclocked to stable levels as well

So far so good no crashes, lag strange graphic problems have gone too, too bad gw was not multi-threaded all these cores sitting around doing nothing.

On the other hand that new game lost planet uses all 4 of my cores wow i had a dual 6600 and bought quad 6600 my frame rates doubled!.

THIS WORKS!

I set my affinity to 1 cpu, and 0 crashs all day. I decide to test my luck and restart GW without setting the affinty back and it crashs.

This fix DOES WORK. Or perhaps I am just lucky...but 4 days of 0 crashs hasnt happend in well.....ever.

Thanks a ton for the find.

the game just updated 2-3 days ago and now even with a dual-core affinity setting, my GW no longer crashes.

I suppose spamming Anet with all my error messages has finally paid off!!

However, for those of you dual-core / multi-core gunners, the affinity setting should still be fine.

Personally, I used to uncheck CPU 0 and use CPU 1.

Now if only I didn't have to repair my data archive every time I close the game after logging out...

Would this benefit me any with an Intel Pentium4 820D? I do have the option of checking CPU0 and CPU1. I don't have problems with it crashing but I do have graphics(FPS ranges from 19-85, don't know why such a large range) and lag problems.

P4 820D 2.8GHz O/C'd and Stable(prime95) at 3.4GHz, ATI Radeon X600XT PCIe Graphics Card(256Mb), 1024Kb DDR2 PC2 4200 533 Dual-Channel OCZ Gold Edition RAM(2x512 modules).

Dark Volker: The heavy variance in your framerate is almost certainly caused by your cheap video card becoming a bottleneck in some situations. The Radeon X600 is basically a slightly overclocked PCI Express version of the Radeon 9600 and it can't even be considered a midrange card in the X?00 series.

I'm currently upgrading to a Asus P5N32-E SLI MB with a Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 and doubling my RAM with the same OCZ PC4200 DDR2 Dual Channel Modules. What Graphics card, with a limited budget, would keep my Frame Rates in the 65-85 range? I'd like to stick with the ATI Radeon PCIe X series.

why not go with the pc6400? Higher mem clock frequecies would match better with the fsb of the e6750 (optimal would be pc8000 or pc 8500, but maxing out your FSB wouldn't really make a huge diff, the step up from 4200 to 6400 is noticable)

Videocard wise, why not try the xfx 8600 xxx series, its relatively cheap for a dx10 card, around $140 or less; im running two in sli mode.

which do you uncheck?

[] CPU 0

or

[] CPU 1?

does it matter if i choose to uncheck [] CPU 0 and keep [] CPU 1 like yukito did?

In theory it shouldn't matter which CPU you uncheck.

I'm not a fan of the GeForce series graphics cards. I've had 3 different GeForces that have all failed on me due to heat. They just don't make them with big enough heatsinks and fans to keep the chipset from overheating. I stick with ATI.
