I read on wiki that Whirlwind Attack is available from hero trainers. So if I get it for a hero can I use it for my main character as well? Thanks! (new to nightfall)

Actually, only you will be able to use it.
Hero trainer is a confusing NPC name. Skills you get there are learnt by your character, and unlocked in the process if they weren't already.
Your heroes have access to the same skills as your PvP characters, which are all unlocked non pve only skills.

http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Whirlwind_attack

And they don't list whirlwind as an available skill. Do I need to finish nightfall or something else?

You don't need to finish Nightfall. The skill is linked to your Sunspear title track, so its not listed under Warrior skills though, its listed under Sunspear Skills.

You also have to see the hero trainers in the sunspear places I think. That is, you have to go to the command post, kamadan or sunspear great hall. I don't think the other hero skill trainer's have the sunspear skills. Haven't looked for awhile myself.
