Stop! Hammer Time! We all seen the bunny thumper build, and I have to admit, that build kinda sucks in Ab since I see this a lot (pvX say this . Why use a hammer while you can actually strike more than one foe? Well I came up of this radical new build called "R/D Scythe Thumper." And I'm going to test it out. After all, expertise doesn't only reduce energy cost of hammer attacks:

Attributes:
Expertise: 10+1
Beast Mastery: 10+1+1
Scythe Mastery: 11

Weapon: Mhedi's Vow is a solid choice here

Equipment:
Rune of Clarity
Radiant Armor and Runes of Attunement

skills:
[skill]Zealous Renewal[/skill] [skill]Crippling Sweep[/skill] [skill]Lyssa's Assault[/skill] [skill]Poisonous Bite[/skill] [skill]Rampage as One[/skill] [skill]Comfort Animal[/skill] [skill]Resurrection Signet[/skill] [skill]Charm Animal[/skill]

In AB, the rez signet can be replaced with another scythe attack.

This build will be tested on my ranger to see how things go.

Yeah, it's been used fairly effectively before. Many variations of the r/d thumper.

This build might end up with too much energy (especially with a zealous weapon), so maybe switch out poisonous bite for a scythe attack that you can spam more

If you are going to switch out the bite I'd go for Farmer's Scythe or something. In AB you should encounter enough foes to bunch them up and hit the advantage. (recharges instantly if it hits more than one foe)

there is a reason for lyssa assault, I think you are right, I might drop the poisonous bite for another scythe attack. Problem with farmer's scythe is I don't have EotN.

If you're picking 3 skills for spammability (if that's not a word, it is now), take Death Blossom over HotO. With the IAS from RaO and the quick recharge on all 3 skills, it's fairly impressive damage.

You don't need Crippling Sweep if you already have a permanent +33% speed boost from RaO.
Farmer's Scythe really sucks, +17 damage if there's more than one foe around your target? [skill]Eremite's Attack[/skill][skill]Mystic Sweep[/skill] will give you much more damage and not just against one target either. Drop Crippling Sweep and Poisonous Bite for them.

IMO Hammer is good because you can KD and daze. Scythe doesn't really offer anything other than damage.

however, scythe allow you to hit multiple foes at once, and I wish there is a non-elite scythe attack that causes bleeding AND deep wound together.

To answer the question posed in the original post, you use a hammer over a scythe because its a superior pressuring weapon due to KD, Deep Wound, and even a marginally higher average DPS (27 average damage per hit for a Hammer, 25 for Scythe, and with the same attack speed). The ability to strike more than one foe doesn't really compensate, because if you're striking more than one foe, its probably because you're being mobbed and mere seconds from death.

Honestly I'm sure that build would do alright in AB's or PvE, and if you find it fun by all means use it, but I just think it makes trade-offs with the hammer variant that make it inferior overall.

You might wanna change the build's name, you can't thump with scythe.

zealous renewal is a very bad choice here without any self removal skill. you will just get random energy gains whenever it ends/gets stripped and thus wont help you much.
lyssa's is too conditional to my liking, especially in RA/AB when you cant rely on enchantments, many ppl have them but your choice of enemies varies widely...
crip slash is a wasted slot for this build, it wont do much of anything with it...
Victorious Sweep is your best bet. bring 2 more scythe attacks of your liking.
also I'd change poisonous bite with a more offensive attack as there are plenty of BA/PA rangers that will spread poison
this build seems to be made mainly for AB so drop the res for a self heal, not sure what u can use as troll is WS which u have 0 at... perhaps invest a few points in it to make it worth while

I think I found a good synergy with poisonous bite:
