Mesmer balanced build?

Well I just started my mesmer and I'm in alittile trouble trying to balance its skills, (offensive spike, spammer spell, healing spell, aoe spell, and defensive spell).

I'm playing illusion mostly (Ineptitude rocks!) and I am having no trouble killing enemies in seconds, but I get killed farley easily too (freaken gangbanging assasins!). Could someone suggest a could spell for aoe (if any in illusion) and a decent defensive skill (from Mesmer class or secondary class, don't matter) that like adds armour or blocks stuff? and suggestions?

p.s. Distoration dosen't work out to well for me, I have to spam in out every 5 seconds, while worrying about healing and attacking too.

Mesmers don't have a lot of AoE in Illusion, and the only skill i can think of that would be of any effect in normal gameplay is Shared Burden, but that is an elite. A good way to stop assassins is to bring a skill interrupt (not a spell one) so as to interrupt their skill chain and force them to use normal attacks or get out of the way. After you interrupt them, immediately cast Empathy, they will recognize it and probably shadow step away. Mesmers really aren't meant to have defensive or healing skills. The only healing skill is Ether Feast which is hardly used anymore bc of the introduction of heroes. As for a defensive skill, we usually just use energy gaining. Drain Enchant is always a great skill to take wherever you are. And Inspired Hex is also a great way to get energy and remove a harmful hex that your heroes/henchies have failed to remove. Basically, you shouldnt be worried about the defense if you have a warrior or paragon in your group with multiple shouts that, if you are in range, boost your defensive capabilities enormously. If you want to play a Mesmer, you need to make sure that you are not focusing on one target in particular:

- Attack/call a target(monks first) so hencies attack it too
- Cast a few hexes/damage spells on him
- Move back a little to cancel your attacks
- target another high priority(necros/eles/support enemies) target and cast some hexes on him to help take them out
- Repeat until you have covered the enemies in hexes.

This idea works amazingly with Illusion and can be applied to Domination as well. In particular, Conjure Phantasm, and Images of Remorse, and Conjure Nightmare are good skills to use in spamming spells around the opponents. If youve got any other questions, feel free to pm me here or ingame.

alright thanks, I guess I can use clumsiness on assasins (to screw with their chains), and ineptitude on other physical damage dealers.

I'm thinking about using the physical resisitence thing, distortion, I lose energy to fast.
\Maybe someday when I go domination i'll use some AOE spells then.

physical resistance is hardly used nowadays, at least in my experience, but it can be used if you dont expect to encounter any eles.

o darn...o well, what might be a good energy managment skill? I never seem to get in range for channeling to work, nor do I want to.

o yeah, is their still any use for illusionary weapon? I heard it's bad after some nerf, but it still looks fun to use.

e-management you can use:
[skill]glyph of lesser energy[/skill]
[skill]auspicious incantation[/skill][skill]conjure nightmare[/skill] or any high energy spell. AI's text is this btw: "For 20 seconds, the next spell you cast is disabled for an additional 10...6 seconds, and you gain 110...182% of that spell's Energy cost."
[skill]power drain[/skill]

Distortion is usually used reactively as you get chased by enemy physicals. If you kite enough, you won't need to spam Distortion anyway.

Don't worry about healing, since you've got your monks on your back.

Probably the BEST energy gaining skills out there are:

[skill]Drain Enchantment[/skill]
[skill]Power Drain[/skill]
[skill]Leech Signet[/skill]
[skill]Auspicious Incantation[/skill]

There is another AoE in Illusion, being Wandering Eye - although that does require having EOTN and having reached the Eye to acquire.

One other thing I've found to be quite useful for a Mesmer looking to maintain their versatility is to bring Echo and a variety of skills with different functions and Echo whichever skill you need the most at a particular time.

Don't forget to run empathy on your bar. Assassins have no answer to empathy, considering it does damage on every hit. 3-hit combos by assassins will kill them pretty quick if they have this hex on them.
