yah I just got guild wars yestderday, I asked my friend somethign I forget what but he said that my video card will burn out like his radeon 9250. He told me though he had been playing the game for about month when it did burn out he did say though he was playing everything on high could that have been the problem?

problem is me being a huge worry wart am now thinking every little thing is now leading to my video cards demise, nothing has happened really except for I just created my first char when I was walking up to a area the ground wasnt textured for like a milisecond before it became textured. Is this a sign or is the game just loading up the screen?

btw my card is a geforce fx 5200 yah I know its crap dont reccomend getting another one please

and every setting is down to the lowest except for texture which is at medium and shadow which is at low

so hope you can help me to stop worrying thanks

so you thought videocards fry because of playing heavy games? ehehe... a total lack of cooling is the cause of frying cards. have fun running gw on that card btw ;D

A game damaging a video card? That is highly unlikely. It is certainly not a general issue or similar incidents would have been reported before now.

His video card was more likely defective and would have died anyway, regardless of whether he was playing Guild Wars or something else at the time.

I have that card, the FX 5200 in my computer since Guild Wars came out back in 2005 and I have logged in over 2000 hours + other games as well including Call of Duty and Dawn of War. I have it set to medium high and my card has never given me problems

The busiest city in factions I've come across is Kaineng Center.

The GeForce FX5200 is a decent graphics card(I know...I used to use one), but I'd recommend upgrading to a higher model so you can set settings higher and get a higher FPS(Frames Per Second). My personal preference(low budget) for an AGP(I use PCIe) would be the ATI Radeon X1300Pro 256Mb. You could pick that up for around $90 and you'd probaby see a significant difference. In my experience with the GeForce series I've had 2 that have failed because of overheating. I've never had an ATI card fail on me yet. If you keep that graphics card, consider getting a video card cooler. It's a fan that you place below your graphics card and sits in the same place a PCI card would be inserted. Something like This or This, with the first one being the ideal type. One of those would definitely keep your card cooler, preventing failure from heat. If your FX5200 only has a heatsink and no fan like mine did, you might consider putting a heatsink and fan on it. Check out www.newegg.com. I'd only do that if you don't plan on upgrading to a newer graphics card though.

It is VERY likely. When GW kept freezing with my old nvidia card, it directly caused me to rip it out of my computer and damage it with my fist.

Since when? It was a crap card when it was released and it certainly ain't got any better with age! Any Nvidia card that features MX or FX in the title should be avoided!

That IS an aspect of the issue that I had failed to consider.

I agree, but I wouldn't say it's a "crap card"(Maybe yes, compared to today's Graphics Card lineup). It's perfectly capable of running GW with low graphics settings...I wouldn't recommend buying one if you're planning on gaming on your system though. On a limited budget, go for a mid-range ATI X series card no less than 256MB. You can get one for under $100 and there'd be a considerably noticeable difference. In my experiences with GeForce cards, they're known for overheating and premature failure unless you take the appropriate measures for keeping their chipsets cool.

There's nothing about GeForce cards that would make them particularily prone to overheating; it's the manufacturer of the card (not Nvidia) that picks the cooling solution, and some manufacturers cheap out on them more than others. Though if it's a real gaming card and not some low-end piece of trash pretty much any manufacturer's coolers should be good enough - if your case has enough airflow.

Actually, ATI's video chip designs are usually less energy efficient so they tend to produce more heat compared to roughly equivalent Nvidia cards, but then again all the good ATI cards come with massive leafblower coolers.

I think it may have enough airflow and not need a fan, I just created a thread called about nightfll and its about the system requirments and a fan, but I checked my comp last night and my comp has 2 fans just not on the videoc ard itself but on the psu and something else I cant put my finger on
