Just starting playing, confused already.

Well I just started playing Guild Wars with my new character today. I have the Game of the year edition (prophecies or something) and I got to Regent Valley and tamed the pet for archery for my second profession but now I have no clue what to do. If I go over the bridge I see these level 2 (I think?) monsters that team up on me and the other way is just a hill with level 1 things and the hill seems like nothing is past it. Where can I go? I have no quests pending and most of my way to level two was by grinding.

Go back to Ascalon and pick up some more quests there. Go here for a full list of quests

A good way to level up in the beginning of prophecies is by killing things little by little and doing quests. You gain a decent amount of xp and your usually level 5 in no time. Did you take the primary quest from Tydus in Ascalon? There are 4 other towns besides ascalon in presearing(the tutorial).

Fort ranik in regent valley.
Foibles fair in wizards folly
And Barradins estate in Green Hills County
And OF COURSE, Ashford abbey. I'm ashamed that forgot that one lol.

Oh, alsothere are plenty of missions and quests to help you level up when you get past the searing also. And PLENTY of things to do in prophecies, it's the biggest of the GW games
