Treasure Chest Grapes

Anybody else havng problems with Treasure Chests in Nightfall only dropping grapes? Ever since GWEN came out, all I get from the Treasure Chests are grape drops. I have eight characters, and I "farm" Treasure Chests once a month to pay for lockpicks and stuff.

Prior to GWEN, I used to get mostly gold drops from Treasure Chests. Now, I get all purples.

What's going on ANET?

They do that if you open them a few times. It happened way before GW:EN too

normal grapes to gold ratio 2/10 est. varies

Edit: Lul, I was tired and didn't see the "Nightfall" part >___>. Yeah, it's definitely because they were opened too many times.

you probably opened them for the third time. realized on my chars that those toons who opened a particular chest for the 3rd time got all purples, with greatly reduced platinum. i ran 6 or 7 chests, all the way till the domains, so i'm disinclined to think it's just bad luck. and i waited for 6 weeks just to be sure too.

maybe there's some other secret variable though.

if u open them first time, gold guarantee, but 2nd 3rd 4th... grape grape grape-_-

Just did the first 9 chests last week on 2 characters, both for the second time. 17 golds and 1 ruby. Also managed another 2 golds while running around to the chests. After seeling stuff I didn't want to keep, cleared about 28k or so.

Nice thing is I have another 1/2 dozen characters in various stages of NF. and 14 total.. Too bad I lack the patience to get them all to the point where that could get easy access to 7-9 chests. I could seriously cash in on just a single run each..lol

Ah well.. guess a slow trickle will work and the older characters will slowly decline into grapedom.

Ive been waiting for somewhere in the region of a billion years for the istan chests to reset. Can someone clarify, does the counter reset if you try to open it before its ready? (causing you to have to wait another month)

Yes, if you try and open the chest before it has reset, the timer will reset and you will have to wait a further month.

i just did a little run of chests cos i was bored and yeeeah i got grapes which was the first time evah. And these were on chests i hadn't gone to in a while, and the ones i had most recently visited still gave me golds. I was a little miffed. D: and the amount of gold had decreased slightly as well D:

ah well. it'll be a while before i remember about those treasure chests and by that time it'll be time to check xD

Thing is itll be like never getting out the special silver because you're saving it for a special occasion!

The counter resets for all of them everytime you try to open any of them.

that's why you wait until like...A LOOOOOONG time xD or mark on a calendar and space out another week for buffering xD

ok ive pretty much lost all chance of getting a gold from a treasure ever again, ive started since day one of them being released.

has anyone tested long waits to see if it goes back to normal?, i.e. 3+ months?
anet really like to keep its mechanics really secret, i'ld love to know how it works, anyway i'll just keep on abusing the chests till i get no gold.

On topic: Started to get grapes on my old main, which sucks since he's my only character that can open all the chests. Why'd they have to ruin it like that? Didn't they want us to have money without having to farm for it or something?

I just did the treasure run for the 3'rd time after waiting 6 months since the last time. Went to all the treasure points (except for Domain of Crap treasures) and got grapes out of all of them.
Went to get them in Hard Mode too but that didn't seem to change anything.

I went to HM with about 15 lockpicks, 1 gold and it's req 13 cane :\

When the treasure chest AGAIN did not open after 2 months of waiting, I rageclicked it at least 50 times.

Since that time all I get is purples and 200-300 gold.

with my sin, I have waited over 2 month and still nothing, but for my other characters, it is a hit or miss

my warrior has opened them 4 or more times and still gets golds

I started my own investigation into the resetting of the chests almost 4 months ago (since I couldn't find the answer anywhere else). I have 8 or 9 characters that all opened chests around the end of the month 4 months back.

After month 1, I took one character to all the chests and got all purples. 2 of my characters who had tried since then and got nothing still got nothing despite not having a record of the last time they got anything from a chest so it's over 4 months (and still continue to get nothing, although I've stopped trying after I realised about the timer reset thing).

After 2 months I took another 2 characters around all the chests and got all purples and one diamond.

At the end of last month I took another 2 characters to the chests and got 2 golds and the rest were purples.

How long will it take for them to reset to normal? I'm not sure, but I think I may end up running out of characters to test it with. 'tis another 2 weeks 'til I try the next one.

If anyone else has documented their gold/purple drop rate from chests over time I'd be interested to hear more.

i'm beginning to have mixed emotions about gold drops from treasure chests and locked chests in HM. When I get gold weps and items, I genearlly salvage the good mods from them, and sell to the merchant anything that is req10 and above. I only keep req9 to try to sell in towns.

Lately, however, the market seems to be swamped with gold weps and items. I will sit in Kamadan, and spam GOLD WEPS Req9, ONLY 1k!!! in the trade channel for hours, and only sell a few.

So I am trying to decide what I want gold weps for. I guess the only reason is for my wisdom title track and the occasional perfect mod and inscription I can pull off one and sell for 2-5k. Other than that, most gold weps are now just as worthless as grapes.

It's been stated before, long before EotN. It's supposed to do that. The more you get the treasure chests the lower the drop/gold value.

The longer you wait, the better the drops get. If you open them before a month, you get nothing. if you want to get gold drops and lots of money again, avoid opening them for 2-3 months at a time.

All i get are NON MAX DMG grapes from HM CHESTS

Just went through TOPK in HM the other day which is first time doing any chest in a long time and everyone but me got golds. I got grape even when it was my first time opening. I just happened to get unlucky while everyone else got decent stuff. With my experience it seems to be pretty random when you first open a chest. Shoot...even when I get golds their merchant fodder at least 95% of the time of the time.

OOO that explains it.... I wait a month then clicked it treasure was empty. I kept doing this every day after. I did this with two chars. My other chars were good all golds. Cool now i know to wait until November.........(i only tried to open one, would the other chests be fine?)

I stopped chest running since lockpicks are introduced. Too expansive and I don't think it's profitable for the future. I rather farm or buy greens for hunting.

I expect this to start happening to people... Just remeber Start in torment and work your way backwards. that way you get teh best potentail for better items in teh higher end areas.

So many people I knew were going easy to hard and getting gold items on istan, then by the time they got the ones in desolation everything was purple... Going the opposite way, Hard to easy, results in gold higher end weapons, with purple low end (non max) ones. Not saying this works all the time, but it helps...

Also My advice... Don't run all your characters for the chests in the same time frame every month. stager it a bit. IF you can keep track of it that is... I know that hard sometimes. but if you go through on 1 character and immediately go through on another, you potentially nerf the run for yourself IT SEEMS TO ME... by the time your on your 3rd character through all the chest you are getting nothing but crapolla. Where as if you stagger the runs. maybe 2 a week if you have a lot of characters. Its VERY lucrative... Not perfect mind you, but you still seem to get your better then ave share at gold drops that way... By the time you have opened the chest 4 or 5 times, I think it was 5 for me, the gold you receive from them seems to drop by 1/2 the original amount attained. Its still a good bit of free gold every month if you ask me. But I think thats pretty fair to limit the reward after so many openings a little... All I can say is of everything I got after all this time. a good 25% of it is still used on heroes, and the gold was put to good use getting skills runes, inscriptions and so on. Just about all of it was returned into the system... so that is what it was meant for. Not to increase the amount of gold in the game, but to kinda offset it a little because of inflation issues,and lack of significant gold sinks to pull it out. Yet allowing a loyal player the opportunity at some of the stuff If their drops have been on the unlucky side, which many seems to be back then. Now. with the D Chests, and Quest chests, and chests that give everyone in the group SOMETHING for completing it... Drops are pretty nice for everyone again. It almost seems like the Freebe chest Should be reset to a 1 time thing again and leave it at that... Instead of refilling them every 32 days. Which was after all the ORIGINAL intent to be a holiday reward. maybe next wintersday it will reset to a 1 time thing and remove the auto nerf at that point since its not repeatable after that... We will see.

PS: and yea dante, I can not tell you how long it took us to figure out how these things worked... We pretty much know its 32days now.

but IF you try again and its empty in between that 32day interval, it resets on that chest for another 32days. I know bummer huh? It was at least the 3rd month after wintersday last that we started figuring out the pattern. It was Aug that most of my chests turned purple and I got 1/2 gold from them... I seem to get 4 or 5 golds out of the 15 per character now. rest is purple. sometimes decent and goes on a hero, sometimes merchant fodder. But the gold is handy... it was like 25k I think originally per character. now its about 12k per character for the 15 treasures. With 8 characters doing the run now. the other 4 do not have full access yet in NF to all of them. That's around 96K on the account and maybe 12 usable gold weapons total for the month... If I stagger the runs every week or so as described above. Thats just using the merchant, as I do not use the player market. I'm sure some of that could be very wisely priced under inflation values and still make a hefty profit for some. Maybe 10k or 15k for 1 or 2 rares from those... that kind of thing.

That's not numbers to bock at... That's still Awfully good for a freebe in the game if you ask me.

Waited close to 3 months before opening one again, still got only 1p and a purple item from the chest in Jahai in Darkness.

Didn´t Gaile say, you have to wait to get better items again? How many years does that take?

Figured I'd drop in with my own experience as well.

I have 4 level 20's that I tested this with to a limited degree and one level 14

My main of course has been all the way to DoA but I haven't bothered to finish NF yet. So all but that chest are accessible to me. The other 3 have access up to Jahai. One even up to the caverns but havent bothered with it yet. The level 14 of course isn't even off of Istan yet.

The first time I tested all characters received gold items and coins...including getting over 1k in coin from the Istani chests. The second time through I'm not certain that I waited a full month for a reset....but it's possible. Same results across the board. After only a day I checked the Istani chests with my main....nothing.I waited two weeks before checking again...still nothing. I waited another two weeks and checked with the level 14....gold items and 500-800 coins each. I then went to the Ruptured Heart and got gold and 1k+ in coin using my main. I have decided to truly make an attempt to track this....so I haven't returned to any more chests with any other character. Approaching nearly two months since last run with my main.

Honestly... considering it was a wintersday freebe that got held over by popular demand.... A year would be my guess. Just saying. that you get anything at all out of it is miraculous to me. I never expected to get something out of it multi times on every character every month for nothing... Its one HUGE freebe if you ask me. even with the purples...

And Necrotic I know for a fact the clock is 32 days on the reset per chest. It took us months to figure out in another thread. But once we confirmed 32 days and scheduled out our tries, it was 100% success at getting something out of them. It was not till several months later people were starting to notice the quality drop.

My personal opinion on this is that its similar to other chests in the game. Anet always says its not a region farm nerf, BUT Somehow I don't think thats 100% honest. Reasoning... Every new campaign or game. Within MOMENTS of going into a live server for the first time on the first day I normally get really really good stuff. Black and white dyes, Gold drops and armors, Gems, Greens, and so on. This was true in NF as well BTW... Then as more people get in there and are playing as well, the quality balances out as more people farm the areas.

Again. NF example. the free content added to the game after the fact for it was of course DoA and HM Network wide. And again. First weekend in there by far the most profitable in both... As time progressed and more people were doing the same thing as me, it diminished. Still getting a rare (rarely) which is how it should be, but not as often as I would the very first day or even weekend in.

Now. GWEN is out and almost everyone is really really active in there. As have I been. However recently I did go and do some things in Factions. Which I personally had not done in a long time now. Guess what. the rewards are really nice over there again.. especially luxon chests beyond the hatchery... IDK why... But still. Not as many people farming over there it seems in my opinion... So I really do think its more then just coincidence. To date everyone still goes and gets the freebe chests. but I am going to leak a secret that I have learned on this...

MOST of the people seem to do it either at the end of the month or the beginning of the month. one or the other... so guess when I do it. Yep the 3rd Wednesday of every month... unless I need an extra day to meet the 32 days limit. If I do it and it is a good run. I do it again on another character the next day or so. So yea... Again, could be 100% coincidence, but it just works for me. I tend to get really nice things from them. Especially for heroes...

Its all in what works for you. thats the secret to this game, you got to find your grove and go with it... If something seems overly popular, Maybe it is. It could be a clue to work outside the box and maybe get a better reward for doing so.

It just occured to me that you're going to get more gold by getting it after every reset instead of waiting 3 or 4 months for the chance of some more gold items.

When a chest is fully reset you get the full amount of gold and a gold drop.
Trying after a month results in a purple and half the gold.

I know that it takes at least 4 months for a chest to reset, maybe longer, but in that time you could have gotten the chest every month and got a purple and half the gold. 4 halfs makes 2, compared to the one time you'd otherwise get it after 4 months.

For those who get the chests for money, do it every month after the reset.
For those who do it for gold drops, wait over 4 months at least (although you'd probably have gotten bored waiting by that time).

I tried getting the treasures on the island in NF with characters on an account I don't use much (and not monitored for the testing of chests as no characters have finished NF), so it has been around 4-5 months since I last got them. I got gold drops from both and the full gold amount.

I just went back and got my free chests after maybe a 5 week wait. Every one was gold and max.

Last night I went in with my Ritualist and that's the character that I used the most to open treasures (maybe 4-6 times). I got better drops and gold on the way getting there than all of the chests I opened.

purple non-maxed crap that I probably wouldn't pick up if it was a monster drop sigh soo many crap objects and gold was like 300-400g. Like I said I made more from drops on the way to chest. Horrible! (last time was all purple too but this time just sucked!)

My paragon got all golds first time.

I never have a problem with grapes falling from chests. I have a regular output of gold and purple drops on a 50/50 basis. I don't know what grapes in GW would be used for. Sugar rush?

i'm getting really terrible decreases in loot lately. I'll be trying again soon as its been 1.5 months so lets hope for a gold or at least a good amount of money this time. Also just a tip that should be well known: i'm pretty sure the chests give better drops in general in hard mode.
