If it becomes Hostile when you try to charm it, then you can easily level him up to lvl 20 and be Dire in about 30-40 minutes. I wasn't sure if those Rainbow Phoenix are hostile or not when you tame them... guessin they are.

Idea of this is to begin charming it, and cancel the charm before it finishes, and let it stay hostile and let it attack you, and eventually kill you to lvl itself up.
Quickest way to do this is get a hero monk with any healing skills including Orison Of Healing, Resurrect, and Res Chant... Disable All healing skills besides Resurrect, until you get 60dp. Flag your monk down just out of earshot, and put him to "Avoid Combat". For your ranger, all you need is charm, and nothin else. Put 2 sup runes on your armor, and 1 major rune of any kind, with Sup vigor...If you only have Minor or Major Vigor, make up the difference with Vitae runes. Minor = 2 Vitae, Major = 1 Vitae, Sup = None. When you get down to 60 dp you will only have around 6-10 hp. Make sure not to be holding any weapons that give +30hp, and don't put anymore health sacrificing runes on or you will die over and over without being able to charm once your down to 60dp. And with this low amount of health, once you get down to 60 dp and have under 10hp, your pet will beable to kill you with 1-3 hits. The will kill you to gain exp to level themselves up to desired level. This is Basically the fastest way to level your pet and make them Dire at the same time... faster than what is suggested on Wiki. It only takes about 30-40 minutes (maybe less) compared to acouple hours.
================================================== =======

1. Make sure you got your armor with right amount of hp sacrificing runes to ensure that you have 5-10 hp when you get down to 60dp.

2.Flag your Hero Monk just outside earshot, where you will be standing, and set to Avoid Combat. Disable all other skills besides Ressurect. Once you get 60dp, enable Orison of Healing...so your monk can heal himself if needed. (the Monk will heal you after you are res'd... but the healing won't do much, and you will still die in one hit by your pet. Aslong as you got around 10hp)

3.Begin Charming your new pet, and cancel it out before it finishes. Let it attack you, and eventually kill you until you got 60dp...and the power levelin will begin for your new pet. (your monk will res you soon as you die, and will heal himself if needed)

4.You can go AFK until your pet reaches level 20. Your pet needs to reach lvl 15+ without dying to be Dire. But why not get Dire and Level it to 20?

5.Once your pet reaches level 20 and ready to charm, enable your Monks skills and use Res Chant to Res yourself. Once your are res'd, quickly take off any armor with Sup or Major Runes (besides Vigor). Or you can simply change armors, or put equip any weapons with HP bonuses. This way your pet won't kill you in one hit and beable to stay alive while you charm it. Your monk will also help keep you alive while you charm.

6. Enjoy your new lvl 20 Dire pet... that only took around 30-40 minutes to level

ONLY for all the runes and stuff mentioned above "blah"
Sorry
but just take all your clothes off for a quick killing.
Then when it's the lvl you want add your clothes back on and charm it
works every time for me when lvling any pet and saves money.

iirc, rainbow phoenixes don't spawn unless you're alone, and dying in the HoM boots you back to the Eye.

So, looks like you have to do it the old-fashioned way...

Feed you pet level 10 Minos outside Ice tooth Cave. Run in grab aggro and let the minos beat on you while you pet does all the attacks. The minos are good because they wont degen your pet and do very little damage.
my W/R bar looked something like:

12 BM

Ferocious Strike {e}
Predators Pounce
Disrupting Lunge/Poisonous Bite/Feral Lunge
Call of Haste
Call of Protection
Feral Aggression
Charm Animal
Bonettis Defense

In the beginning, your pet does very little damage, but as it levels up the run gets a little better.

Bring a high damage build (AoE works nice usually) with a bit of self heal, Symbiotic Bond, Call of Protection, and Charm Animal.

Go outside Ice Tooth Caves, Normal Mode until pet level 11, Hard Mode after that.

Set up two hero monks, one as prot bond, one healer.
Monk 1: Life Bond, Life Barrier, Succor, Balth Spirit and Blessed Signet
Monk 2: Watchful Spirit, Mending, Essence Bond

Manually cast Monk 1 bonds (Succor too) on you, then your pet, then Balth on Monk 1.
Cast Watchful, Mending, Essence Bond on you, Watchful and Mending on your pet, then Essence on Monk 2.

Kill.

Works every time.

It's a common misconception that your pet needs to do the damage. Not so. Your pet needs to gain experience without taking excessive damage. You won't see the evolution while leveling, but if you zone out/in at pet level 13, your pet should be aggressive. Keep going and at 15 your pet will be Dire.

I've heard reports that standard training methods that make normal pets Dire fail with the rainbow phoenix. Has anyone in this thread tried the training builds they've used successfully in the past?

I would sugest having a hero monk bond the pet, that will limit dmg to a bare min then just run him against some melee foes like minataurs or if you have access to hard mode then the stone golems outside of serenity temple is a fast and easy way. Just don't let your pet take dmg or die and you will have the dire status you wish

do you all realize that a rainbow phoenix doesn't evolve like the other pets?

I think training any pet to dire is quite easy but the rainbow phoenix somehow seems different.

mine didn't evolve at all with the same method i trained my other dire pets!

Fixed a but that prevented raibow pheonix pets from evolving into dire pets.

i trianed my raibow phoenix in elona reach, killing those lvl 20 minataurs and lvl 22 Behemoth at the beginning of the mission.
The skill i use are the following:
Charm Animal
Comfort Animal
Brutal Strike
Call of Protection
Enraged Lunge
Otyugh's Cry
Symbiotic Bond
Feral Aggression
Attribute: 16 Beast and 13/14 Expertiese.

Basic Idea is that you take the agro and let ur pet do the dmg. Make sure all your animal prot skills are on recharge and spam Enraged Lunge and Brutal Strike. Enraged Lunge can do 90+ dmg and Brutal does 50-90.

I also brough a Lod Monk with Br to heal and br me when I ran out of energy. healing seed is also a good skill to put on the heal monk.

From lvl 6-11 takes 1 run to lvl your pet, and from 12-15 takes about 1 and half to 2 runs per lvl. Each run takes about 15 min to complete.

I'd done much the same as others suggested.... but with a few variations.

To get it to around level 9.... I beat up Yetis in Jaia Bluffs on Shing Jea... using all the Beast Mastery defensive skills and Enraging Lunge (as well as that other one that causes bleeding).

I then throw Dunkoro as a Bonder.... slaughtered everything outside Gates of Kryta a few times....

I eventually figured out that what I needed was the Minotaurs outside and around the Ice Tooth Caves in "Northern" Shiverpeaks.... in Hard Mode.

And it was just a matter of running around aggroing Minotaurs and then bringing Dunky in to just outside aggro range to put the other prot spells on me. Both myself and my pet were Barrier-Bonded at all times...
And mr Gojirabird didn't take any damage at ALL except on the odd occasion when Dunky got targetted and died.... He certainly didn't die even once. It was kinda like 2-man (and one bird) farming.

And now he is Dire.

He is level 17 (was 16 until I took him through Secret Lair of the Snowmen on Passive a few times).....

Finally got my Dire Rainbow Phoenix. Leveled him up in Elona Reachs mission killing the minotaurs. I like big pets, and I could of sworn the hearty rainbow phoenix I had before my Dire was bigger then my dire. Thanks all for helping.
