What justifies a /report?

With the /report system in place, I'm just wondering when everyone decides a /report is necessary. Obviously the standard, leeching, botting, and leaving qualify for a /report but I'm mainly asking for pve or social situations when you think a /report is justified.

For example, just yesterday a couple guildies and I were out in doomlore shrine preping to do vieled threat. We then have a random person in town come up to us and start talking about the tag for our guild name.

Our tag is leet(now i know others here may think its cheesy or lame but thats not the issue), and this player proceeded to say, "Great, as if the word leet wasn't lame enough we've got guilds using it now."

One of the more hot headed members in my guild responds with, "Its our guild we can name it however we like." The random player proceeds to say, "I bet you guys are a bunch of kids playing together."

The same member of my guild then responds with mocking/sarcasm and says, "Your just jealous that i'm prettier than you"

Now the member of my guild who keeps responding, his character name has a reference to star wars. Thus the random person in town proceeds to zero in on him and bash his character name saying. "At least I don't have a lame star wars reference in my name."

Finally I speak up and say, "Could you just mind your own business? We name our guild however we like, or our characters however we like. You name your characters the way you like. Everyone has their own opinion and taste." This person in town then says, "I enjoy picking out the players with lame names, I get a lot of laughs seeing stupid names like Leet and making fun of them."

By that point we were ready to go out to the dungeon so we just left town and that was that.

Now I didn't report this individual as I figured hes just being childish and a member of my own guild did semi-feed the flames.

The point of this thread isn't to discuss whether the situation I used as an example should or should not have justified a /report, I'm just using it as an example of a situation where a player made negative comments but I choose not to /report. This thread is me asking the community, whats your criteria for when you decide to /report. Do you just do it the moment someone says, "Your a noob!!" or do you wait for the serious offences.

None of your examples justify anything. If you cant take a bit of intown banter go play your games offline.

I think it should be used mainly for excessive langauge, leeching, botting or griefing in pvp.
Pointless squabbles like your's should and will i hope will be ignored as they are a waste of their time.

With your above example I would say that there wasn't anything said between you guys that deemed a report. Sounds to me like you simply had a conversation and disagreed with each other. In my eyes you made the right decision.

I think that most people need to simply ignore people like that. Don't respond to them at all. The guy said it himself that he likes to do this to people. So his fun is seeing how you are going to react. Don't give him the pleasure.

The /report command should be use very sparingly. Only when its an obvious violation of the EULA and such. It shouldn't be used simply because someone else made you mad or got on your nerves for a little bit.

Take any steps you can to start with. (filter and ignore list) If that is not enough and you keep getting harassed then its time to take it to the next step. People need to make sure they take their finger off the /report trigger and do everything else in their power first.

/report him for harassment. I sure as hell would have.

Serious Offenses only...

-Offensive language
--Racist
--Over the top use of curse words (an occasional one used in chat is fine unless specifically directed at someone)
--Sexual remarks
--Anything that the person doing the reporting considers offensive (yeah this might not work....pretty wide definition as just about anything falls under this)
-Offensive Radar images - genitalia on the radar and such...needs to be reportable...grow up people
-Gold Selling
-Scammers (open to interpretation unfortunately...some people consider running to be scamming...or selling something higher than it's worth...etc...those kinds of things shouldn't be included)
-Spammers (all kinds...including spamming in trade chat...)
-Botters
-Trade Spammers in Local Chat (an occasional trade message is ok imo...but people spamming the crap should be reported as it interrupts the local chat)
-Trying to sell stuff by abusing the order of party search categories...ie putting a trade message in as a mission (the person should be asked by move it first though)
-AFK people in missions - if they don't say "I'm going afk" or similar...people who do that should not be reported unless it significantly screws up the group...such as in a timed mission or in the middle of battle. Yeah open to abuse too...people with a lot of disconnects would get hit hard.
-Leechers in missions
-griefers - people who join groups only to disrupt the fun of people in the group...draw agro and intentionally make the mission much more difficult or impossible for the group. People who intentionally show one build then use something completely different (I consider these people to be griefers).

Things that shouldn't be reported:
-Anything you would never report to Anet via the support system - this includes stuff like people who refuse to use the build you want them to use...silly stuff you'd never involve Anet on. Yes it's true some of the stuff I listed above would be included, I just feel that some stuff should be able to be reported.

If they get the report system working optimally (being able to report without it being abused) I'd like to see similar penalties in PvE as they have in PvP...get enough reports and you get a timeout from gameplay. For gameplay issues you'd simply wouldn't be able to enter missions or explorable areas. For chat issues you wouldn't be able to chat in local or trade...and for the stuff that breaks the EULA it would obviously be reviewed by Anet....with possible ban or suspension actions. The way the current system is I would not want to see this happen for PvE as it's too abusable...but if they tweak it enough perhaps we could get a system without needing GM's in game.

Developing that type of a system would be really challenging as there is plenty of room for abuse unfortunately. So it may never be possible.


As for the example you presented...I would have just ignored him...no need for a report.

I hate people spamming WTS/WTB in allchat. It bugs me that anet has specifically stated that this is against the ULA and is a bannable offence but there are still people who feel they are above the law and better than everyone else who follows the rules and refuse to abide by it, often times vehemently defending their "right" to do so and becoming verbally abusive when I politely ask them to take it to trade chat.

The system is not meant "solely for PvP" as I keep hearing people say. That isn't my understanding of it having read the update notes anyway. So on the PvE side of things my opinion of /reportable offences would be:

-Excessive wts/wtb in allchat, refusal to stop when asked to do so by other players.

-Abusive, offensive, racist or prejudiced language. (I'm talking about extreme cases, not someone calling you a noob)

-People spamming to buy/sell accounts, sell ingame gold for real money, other blatant violations of the ula.

These are the big ones that come to mind anyway. I only use /report as a last resort in extreme cases, always asking the player first to modify their behavior. Unfortunately this request is rarely met with any sort of decent or civil response.

Inger, I can't believe that you considered /reporting for THAT. That's nothing. Especially considering that your own guild members did the honor of stooping to that guy's level, even considering using /report is nothing more than tattle-tailing.

People need to use the ignore feature first and foremost. Tattle-tailing makes you part of the problem.

The best time to /report is the instant the bastard logs in. Catch em with their pants down.

Grow some thicker skin, and solve your virtual slapfights through other mans than trying to have arenanet punish someone.

/report is for leeching or griefing, in my opinion. Ignore solves every other problem you could have.

No offense, but I have to disagree with that. Why should it be my responsability to be constantly adding/removing people from my ignore list because they refuse to follow the rules. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying you should go reporting every single person that disagrees with you or gets a bit immature.

When someone becomes overly vile in chat or refuses to follow the ULA with blatant disrespect for other players, Anet should punish them, and they are giving us a tool to inform them when these things occur.

Griefing and leeching are primarily PvP problems and that argument is basically saying that the problems of the PvE player do not call for the same level of action. Yes it's going to be abused at first, and I'm sure alot of people will be getting slapped a bit for /reporting things too loosely, but the fact remains that every single player of this game has the right to an environment free from verbal abuse, harassment, disruptive chat, spam, and the right to fair and balanced gameplay regardless of if they play PvP, PvE, or just want to stand in Lion's Arch and hold a conversation with other players.

As soon as someone steps foot in my private realm [Russian districts belong to ME, I report them.

i often use language that some would consider offensive. sometimes, this is directed at a specific player. i should be able to do so without concern about being reported.

dont like it? turn on chat filter or put me on your ignore list. dont go crying to anet. cuz we are not children and they are not our mother who can spank us or wash our mouths with soap every time we utter a cuss word. grow some RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GOing balls.

in conclusion, i move that "offensive language" be removed from the list of reasons to /report.

Although I don't think it should be removed, I agree with what I believe Cytheria is trying to say. There is an in game chat filter and if you cuss in casual conversation it shouldn't be reportable as people who are offended by this can just switch the filter on. When it SHOULD be reportable is when people are doing it to deliberately be offensive, using racial slurs or being extremely crude while using ways to bypass the filter.

It's basically a question of where do we draw the line. If I want to drop an Fbomb while I'm talking to a buddy it would piss me off to have someone report me for it, however if I'm sitting there cussing someone out in an argument and being as explicit and vile as I can to deliberately offend the person then I deserve to be reported for it and punished accordingly. That's my take anyway. Not everyone who plays this game is you, or is like you, alot of people who play GW are very young, I have friends who play with their kids. However priveledged you may feel you don't have the right in the game to go around spouting profanity for the purpose of offending others. It's a game we play on anet's servers and freedom of speech is not something that was gauranteed to you in the ULA you agreed to.

You don't have a /ignore feature in real life. You simply choose not to respond. Practice this in game, it works much better than a limited ignore list feature.
