I am migrating from one computer to another and have encountered this problem. Any help would be appreciated.
I downloaded the Client from the GW site and it installed fine. When I copy my Gw.dat file over to the C:\Program Files\Guild Wars directory and then try starting GW, I get the following error:
Unable to Open Archive File
Guild Wars is unable to access its archive file C:\Program Files\Guild Wars\Gw.dat. Please verify that this file is accessible and writeable, and that no other program is currently using it.
I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling a couple of times. I've tried copying the file a couple of times. I can't figure out what the problem is. Any ideas? Obviously GW still works fine on my other PC.

Have you made sure that the file isn't marked as read only? i.e. After copying it across, right-click it, select properties and make sure read-only is unchecked?

How did you copy the gw.dat file? If you burned it onto a DVD or copied it from a read-only network share Windows may have marked the the resulting file as read-only too, rendering Guild Wars unable to open the file.
Right-click on the gw.dat file, select "properties" and make sure the "Read-only" checkbox isn't checked.

Make sure you have ownership to the File.
First:
First:
1. Open up "My Computer" and goto the "Tools" menu and select "Folder Options".Second:
2. Click the "View" tab, scroll to the bottom of the list and make sure "Use Simple File Sharing" is unchecked.
1. Right-click (Guild Wars Folder) > Properties > Security Tab > Advanced > Owner TabLet me know if this solves the problem or not. You may have to redownload the GW.dat file.
2. Select your User account, check the "Replace Owner on subcontainers and objects" checkbox, and hit apply.
