Anet may not be in charge of pricing but they are the communities conduit in communicating all aspects of Guildwars. They are also in charge of promoting the game. Also as the poster stated with what happened with the Iphone and Apple offering a rebate to all customers that bought the phone 2 months before the price drop. I think his argument was valid and should not have been flamed by a moderator.

That thread was rightfully closed because the OP began his post screaming at a.net for the price change.

Price drops happen all the time and with the approaching Christmas holiday it should not be a surprise. The Apple refund thing is a completely different thing.

A) The apple price drop was $100 dollars. You are complaining about a price drop of $10 dollars. That's a big difference. Apple's customer's were screwed. You were inconvienced.

B) Apple can afford to supply a rebate, being a behemoth company compared to NCSoft.

i bought my copy at the on-line store. i think the price was reasonable, and anet gets all the profits instead of having to split it with the retailer. i'm fine with that. it's the same as buying an album in a store or downloading the songs from a band's website and cutting them a check. i'd rather do the latter than the former.

I am assuming what the poster meant by using the apple analogy was that when a company drastically reduces the cost of a product 2 months after release that is a pretty shameless thing to do.
Also when you look at price drops try not look at actual dollars, instead look at percentages. The reaction to the Iphone was not about the 100$ if it was you should;t even own one. It was about reducing the cost so drastically. 29.99 is a 25% reduction and for us Canadians a 50% reduction( seeing as our dollar is = to yours now) in price after 1 month of release, that is crazy. Also please do not say it is a sale price, because as we all know once one does it, they all do it, then the consumer expects it and the price is fixed.

I doubt Arena Net has much say in the price of their games, NCSoft as the parent company probably makes all of those decisions and just tells Arena Net to pump out games as fast as possible.

Maybe the words "Special Offer" and "On Sale" mean something?

You misunderstood my point. My point was that it's not Anet lowering the price, because it's still 39.99 in their store. That thread was full of rants, this one is not.

Should've been $29.99 as a starting price considering the extremely rushed feel and lack of actual content the Expansion has provided. A truly sad conclusion to the first set of Guild Wars games.

I saw it posted elsewhere that it felt like one giant interactive Guild Wars 2 commercial.

Anet sets a MSRP on GW: EoTN. However, the MSRP is really only a guideline price; it's what anet says "I wan't you to sell it at this price. But you don't have to if you don't want to. But if you do, you make more money off each sale! Cool, huh?"

So, if target, or bestbuy, or where-ever, sets the price at 20 dollars they're allowed to. Prices will always be the MSRP when it first comes out; as time goes on, prices always drop. That's the price of wanting something now.

You're thinking is quite flawed. If you think for an instant that retailers are free to offer items at whatever price they want, you are sorely mistaken. Distribution agreements come with very strict pricing restrictions, especially early in the life of the product.

A 25% price reduction basically within a month of release tells you how well the product has sold and what the expected future sales rate is. Obviously at $40 the game stopped selling so either retailers begged to be allowed to offer it lower or NC Soft decided to allow retailers to lower their price to try to create some sales.

Yes, it is quite disappointing for those of us that bought it right away but there's really nothing we can do. Early adopters always pay a higher price, too bad in this case it was for such a rushed product that didn't live up to expectations.

Uh it's because it is an expansion that requires a previous chapter that it had a limited target userbase. Plus the bad publicity from the Hall of Monuments being terrible, the grind for reputation,...and pvpers not having much incentive (given it would be $40USD for 100 skills) makes it an even smaller user base.

The expansion is a fan service, nothing more if you think about it. The fact that it is an expansion requiring a previous chapter is a sure sign of this. When something doesn't sell or is overstocked (probably overstocked in this case) the price is lowered by retailers. I don't think that GW:EN didn't sell well, I think the combination of a small market and a large supply meant the prices had to drop.

The recent patches to GW:EN give me hope that the userbase will expand with time due to fixing a lot of the issues raised since the preview event, however.

Walmart has always been bad with price cuts on games and they rarely carry the best selection in my area. I save more on less wasted gas driving to Best Buy or EBgames, both of which are closer. Thus I tend not to shop there for my games.
