If someone would be as so kind as to post this at GW Online, that’d be great…

I have been here awhile, I wanted to try and do something beneficial for the community.. After thinking it over, I have wondered what could possibly be done.. There are hundreds of ideas, but I have picked out one that I believe to be considerably strong...

I have decided to start a magazine for the GW world, and what is going on. I would like to add articles, guides, and tips in order to add an easily accessible accumulation of knowledge to this community.

Now why would I be posting this? Well I would like to make this as much a community-participating activity as it could possibly be, so I’ll be asking a series of requests to see how we this will work out over time.

I. How to participate:

There are many things that you can actually do to help me with this magazine. I need very many resources in order to make this a reality, but the greatest of all is participation. Throughout this area, I will discuss some of the possible things that I need, that you may be interested in…

a. Articles

One of the most important Assets to this magazine is its articles. By articles I mean a certain topic that is discussed into a basic level, and gone into further with more advanced concepts and terminology with many screenshots to help explain the ideas. For example, Say I want to do an article on trapping. I would start by examining what trapping is, and how it is done. What the basic concepts of trapping are, along with proper pulling technique, and skills. Then I might go into a more advanced level where I discuss the skills that are commonly used, and various spirits that can be helpful in trapping. Screen caps are a good way to get difficult concepts across. (Remember to resize your screen caps if you do in fact take some)

b. Ideas

Submitted Ideas are a helpful way to let authors and I know what you want to see changed or done differently. If you want to send ideas, make sure you talk clearly and plainly so as to get your ideas across easily.

c. Suggestions

If you have any suggestions, then please send them… Anything that will help us where it be better formatting, or a whole new system in which to do a certain thing is certainly helpful.

d. Questions

I would like to do a page specifically dedicated to the questions that people have. Please only logical questions… No chicken and the egg crap!

e. Tips

Another page I would like to do is one that is specifically dedicated to tips. One that a newcomer can flip to so as to not piss of a party… maybe even stuff as simple as don’t use frenzy then heal sig is good enough.

II. Article Formatting and Submission:

This area contains the basic info you need to get your articles going. In order to put this into a workable PDF file for distribution, I need some of these things.

a. How to format an article for submission

First and foremost, I need my articles done in Microsoft word… If you don’t have word, don’t even consider sending me a submission. Now, here are the specific things I want done to an article:

1. Most of you are used to an IM where you can talk like a gangsta’... but I don’t want that crap when you write an article. Articles need to be clean, free of vulgarity, Written in proper English, with proper grammar.

2. All Articles are to be 1’ margins, Times New Roman Font, Size 12.

3. Articles are to have a title of the topic you are covering.

4. All Articles are to have are to have two sections, one for beginners and one for advanced players.

5. All articles are to be finished with a hyphen and your name and IGN. (E.G. –Jordan Lovato/I Might Avenge U)

b. Where do I submit my articles?

All articles, Questions, Suggestions, Tips, and Ideas can be sent to my email: [email protected]

*Or alternatively you can PM to me; I give my email so that any Guest to GWG can submit as well. For the record, I would prefer you send it through email. If you spam me, I will trace the email and cut your head off… *

c. What Types of Articles can I do?

Right now I need articles for all professions… So share your knowledge on any of the following:
• Warrior
• Ranger
• Mesmer
• Elementalist
• Necromancer
• Monk
• Assassin
• Ritualist
• Dervish
• Paragon
• Heroes

d. When is the deadline?

The current deadline is: October 26th.

III. Featured Artist:

This area will cover my idea of a featured artist…

a. What is a featured Artist?

A featured artist is an artist of my choosing that will be in the magazine. I will be displaying 3-5 of their best pieces, any commentary on the artwork, a bit of background info, prices, and a link to their commissions’ page.

b. How do I become a featured artist?

More than likely, I will just approach you via PM asking if you would like to be this magazine’s featured artist. After which I will send a survey for you to fill out.

IV. Images:

All images are a big part of this magazine, and I want to make sure that you are equipped with enough knowledge to get your images just right.

a. What needs to be included image-wise?

All images are for instructional purposes. If you write an article, then images need to be a fairly decent part of it. Anything necessary to the article, image-wise, should be included. *If you take an image from someone, please Cite where you got it!*

b. How do I take an Image?

It’s as easy as pie. Get your shot all set up; once ready, press “Print Screen” [Prnt Scrn]. Navigate to your Guild wars folder in your hard drive, and find the J-Peg of the shot you took.

c. Builds

If you submit a build along with an article, you need a picture of all the skills, and you need a complete explanation of the skill (the explanation can be done in a smaller font).

V. About Myself and Upcoming Magazines:

a. Who the heck are you?
My name is Jordan Lovato, I have been playing this game for 2 years, and I am an aspiring designer. I probably know more about design that anyone else at my school… I’m 15 btw…

b. Where can I download a Magazine?
For the time being the only place is to download them here on GWG. I might make a website if it gets big enough…

c. What are you actually contributing?!!
Well besides me actually “making” the magazine, I will be revising articles, Writing more common topics, and writing some articles on the characters I play. Mostly Ranger..

Alright Folks! I really hope this becomes a success! Or else I just spent an hour of my life typing for jack…

WoW IMAU! sweet idea, looks like a big project to me.
if u dun mind me giving my 2 cents, in addition to doing the featured artists section why not add a section where people can submit commissions they got from other people, similar to how OGAWC club works? This of course might involve getting consents from artists n stuff and might come down to a very huge job to do but i think it'll be great if it works.
Anyways I'm keeping my fingers crossed and will be watching this thread for further dev ^^. I'll gladly help with anything if i'm able to do it and if i have the time. Good luck!

Thx Kenichiukiya.

Yeah, this one will take awhile to format. I don't really worry about that, I just need to get the idea out there, so that others will participate.

I really wouldn't mind Showing commisions, but I don't think that it would mesh well with the featured artist. I'm not sure, it might be worth trying out and getting commentary on.. But before I start re-formatting, I need to Format.. and get my templet done...

Anyways, there's plenty you could help me with. If you want to write an article, that'd be awesome. What would really help me out is if you could go In-game and link others to the thread to see if they would like to help. But anything you can do would really help!

Awesome Idea! I might participate, I'm into small writing and maybe I can somehow help with design?

You should also make a PDF Adobe file so people can print it out, zoom in/out and other such features.

My fiance occasionally writes articles for our guild's website. I have done a few for a project I was working on last Spring, but because it's hard to write good material each month for a site that no one is looking at yet I abandoned it pretty quickly. I was hoping to have player interviews (this was before the GW site started doing them) because my site was about the wide variety of lifestyles of GW players. It's something I think is great about GW, because since there's no subscription and your account stays around (and it's got big missions AND bite-size quests) anyone can pick it up again whenever they want, and don't have to devote all their spare time to it. It's a wonderful game, but what's more wonderful is the fact that players can still have a life outside the game. Anyway, that's what I was going to call it: Guild Wars Life. About life in-game and out. Articles and interviews about what people do for a living, or where/why they are going to school. Maybe consumer reports on gaming products (electronics, peripherals, office furniture, caffeine products that are new ).

Again, it was hard to get motivated to create all this new information on my own in a timely manner when there were less people checking it out frequently than there were articles. I really hope you can get some good help with this. If you ever want a slightly out-of-the-ordinary type article (Psychology of the Gaming Area or something weird like that), gimme a shout. I'm currently a junior in college working on a Bachelor of Science, Liberal Studies: Art/Psychology/Marketing (that's a mouth full for sure). It's my job not to think outside the box so much as to think "about" the box if that makes any sense.

Yeah, I already plan on making it A .pdf for various reasons.. But as far as design goes, I pretty much got it covered, more than anything, I need more articles. If you have a guild, tell them, or if you can do one yourself, that'd be great. Just try to get the word out there.

@Starr - Any ways in which you can help is awesome! If you want to write an article, submit it and I'll look it over, maybe I can make a more off-topic section or something. If you don't want to write anything, please ask your guildies to come visit this thread, and all your friends to come check it out..

That'd be great, if you can write articles on current events. The only think is you have to make sure that you do it according to the time it will be released. If you think you might be into it, do an article on Halloween in GW. look it up on guildwiki, tell everyone what is out there to farm, and what to be ready for in accordance to past events.

Since the deadline for articles is the 26th, I plan on having the first mag out on the 28th or so, which is right before that whole Halloween gig. Anyways, think about it, and tell your guild mates about the GW mag..

Alright, I shall spread the word out, How long do you want the article, mainly about just Halloween in GW?

Hehe, I personally am against Halloween, but this is just a game.

PS: What kind of pictures do you want/size/quantity?

(PSS: The random article section isn't a bad idea, maybe have a podcast?)

....so.....you're against trick-or-treating, not Halloween. There's a difference. There's a lot more to Halloween than candy. It really is a fascinating holiday celebrated all over the world. An interesting angle for this might be a kind of memorial to characters that died in the storyline along side the quests, treats and festivities that we have come to expect from the annual in-game party.

Well, The fact I really don't approve of Halloween, It's a long story, but on GW it's fine, because, well it's obviously a video game.

About the "podcast" you can include with the magazine we can have person compile information and speak it out, I was thinking it can be short, not too long that it starts to bore you.

Please leave any further discussion on Halloween to PMing

As for the rest of ideas, I think a podcast is just pointless extra work. No real need for one. As for Halloween, If you want to do the article, go for it, if not You can do anything on current events that suits you. I just think that Halloween is the biggest thing that will be going on during the time that the first issue will be released...

I haven't read a lot of the text on this page but something just kinda jumped out on me. Someone suggested putting commission pictures on the mag OGAWC style. Putting commission works on the magazine should imo be treated with a bit of caution. Just a reminder that the artists still hold the copyrights of the artworks to themselves(at least partially since it is fanart) and that some might not agree to them being "published" and .pdf is such an easily publishable/printable format.

Anyway just a thought. I don't mind personally and this is a fan publication and should be fun like that. Great idea IMAU and good work. I am mostly looking forward to getting to read some fun and interesting articles in the future! I'm no writer myself but many people here are very talented.

My suggestion is that the deadlines for the first publication shouldn't be too strict. Let the first one be a quality piece of work well put together with time and be publieshed when it is ready. If any design/layout craftery for articles etc. is needed I'm also a volunteer as long as I'm not swamped with school/work.

I haven't been able to get on GW lately due to uni work....but i'll try to get the words out to my alliance when i do.

PDF is the safest way to go as long as there's a disclaimer included with each one. Just pretty much along with the usual copyright info about the game, add a line about fan artists and say that you do not intend to publish hard copies of the document. It's entirely up to the readers what they do with it at that point, but you could have a line about not publishing for redistribution or commercial purposes. That should keep you safe and then if anyone does, that was them going against the rules, not you. For your side of it, you're not technically publishing anything. It's the equivalent of sending someone a well-documented term paper over the internet that happens to be about GW. I think you're probably pretty safe.

I think it will be fine. As these guys are saying, don't rush. Get a feel for the flow of material you'll be getting to set the pace for release. Might have plenty of good stuff before Halloween.

Yup .PDF is the way to go. Since no one can actually steal the photo (At least I don't think... ), I will of course give as much credit where it is due. I will link to as much As I can... Most Images are protected under the Creative Commons license (which I will also be using.. ) and I therefore can't publish them commercially legally without consent from the owner.. Which I'm getting anyways. I still have to figure all this out, but I will make sure everything is safe before I tread over it...

As for deadline, My main goal is to just get it out before Halloween. the 26th is optimal so that I have at least 2 days to make sure Everything is looking great and ready to be published.. Kind of rough, but believe me if I don't set a deadline it is a lot harder.. Believe me, Media club at my school fails at this and it is the one thing I hate about it...

What is your screen resolution? The layout is fine on my widescreen, but on my laptop the pictures are cut in half in order to get the font size legible. Not really a problem, because most of the time I don't need to look at the picture until I've read the text, so I can just scroll over. If you have features that rely on the images more to get the objective across, you'll want to place them on the left so people scroll to the text at the right.
The colors are good. The font might be a little bigger, but if you go too big that's gonna be a pretty big file for people to download. As it stands you can fit a great deal of info in the text boxes, so that's good.
I give it 8 of 10, just because I'm not sure which one would be easier to adjust, the picture position or the font size. Like I say, it's fine on a widescreen, so alot of people aren't even going to have that problem.

Will you be keeping the color scheme for the whole magazine or maybe slightly different colors to differentiate between articles or the type of article? Either way is cool. I'm sure you can include bookmarks to pages, but if you go with the different colors people can skim through the thumbnails to find the article they were looking for and have the chance to notice something they missed before on the way.

Sorry, technical writing has saturated my brain this semester.

I love the layout! Course I naturally like anything dark so it doesn't hurt my eyes =]

Then again, if it's dark it takes TONS more ink to print out if people wanted to. Overall I like it, Since this is in PDF format people with lower resolution will be able to zoom out for a full few.

Some advice, if I may, concerning the layout. If you're aiming for a magazine look, you might want to consider breaking up the text into columms. You can also try spreading the images, and quotes across the different columns. It should break up the page, and make it a bit more interesting to look at

He's an example knocked up in photoshop, using the article I did ;D
