Present Wrapping service

Not a completely game changing idea nor is it uber awesome tbh. But after a Guildie brought it up yesterday i had a wee think about it and relised it would actually be pretty smart.

Basically it would be like the fesitival hat maker, except it would wrap items(weapons, materials, mini pets or whatever else) in a present box for a small fee. It would make recieving or giving presents a wee bit more special imo. Then again i don't know how many people bother to exchange gifts or give away things nowadays.

Basic theory of how it could possibly work.

The wrapped present is customised to the recipient so it can't be used in scams. No trade involved.

So you want to disguise an item inside of a present box skin? So someone could try to fool a new player into thinking 1 wood plank is actually an ectoplasm for 1,500g?

Not to mention the bigger scams out there...

Personally, I don't think that a present box icon will make anything you give your friends any better. If you're giving them a great item, isn't that enough? Isn't it a surprise enough for them to see what the item is in the trade window for that matter?

It's a neat idea, but it would become easily abused and isn't necessary.

This reminds me of PSO, they had a similar function where you paid an NPC, and he would wrap an item for you to give away as a gift......It was always fun to sit on pioneer 2 and give out random prizes(watch some guy pout cuz he got a monomate and some other guy cheer because he got a red weapon).

Kinda useless, but amusing nonetheless.

If anyone is dumb enough to be scammed by this, they deserve it. The idea is awesome and would add a nice touch to the game, just like the shades my ele wears.

It wouldn't be for trades or sales and I would never purchase anything that's wrapped anyways. I like this idea for fun gifts. I'd also like to see a post box and delivery system so you can send packages to people who aren't online yet. Then they can go to some NPC to check his/her delivery box.

You overestimate the average intelligence of the player-base. I've seen a lot of really gullible people. Not everyone has been taught to be cautious with strangers (don't ask me why, not enough Sunday cartoons maybe?).

Because that couldn't possibly be abused by botters with multiple accounts...

You're underestimating the intelligence of the player base. You think someone would pay 100k+ for a promise of a perfect gold storm bow? No. If someone does that, they deserve to be taken. They won't do it again, that's for sure. If they do, then they deserve it even more.

How about coding it so they can't be traded for cash, just given directly? Direct deposit into the character's inventory, as a surprise. next time they hit I, bundle of joy waiting for them.

As for the delivery service being abused by botters with multiple accounts....yeah so that botter with 3 systems running at the same time can't just trade directly to the "bank" account real-time anyway? Uh huh...

This would be a nice feature.

I also wish there was a mail system of some kind, so that I could leave gifts and messages for friends who aren't online.

EDIT: the idea of making them untradeable in the regular fashion would help reduce scamming.

I think this is a nice idea.
Just make the icon and name special. like "Wrapped Present" with a unique looking icon that can be dyed =)

For all those people who are saying that it will result in scamming - you can only be scammed if you are desperate enough to buy one in the first place. It's not that hard to say "No, I don't want to pay lots of money for this mystery item".

There's the trade window and they can make a new gift window for one way item transfer.

^^ no wasted time needed - they already have the codes for present wrapping/unwrapping - wintersday gifts, birthday gifts. And they have the code for the NPC - festival hat maker.

Very cool idea for those of us with active, helpful, friendly guilds that do things for others just for fun.

As for scamming - the name tag would just have to be "Wrapped Gift" or "Personal Gift" and you close that door. Anyone paying stupid money for it would richly deserve his reward.

They won't implement the 'parcel service' though - that's been mooted before due to the game mechanic/coding restraints. Just deliver your gift in person.

Heartily SIGNED for the fun factor it introduces at minimal cost to the Devs.

just a thought... given that it's a present, shouldn't it be made completely impossible for the recipient to be paying something for it?

It doesn't have to go by the trade window......there's already the coding for putting wrapped boxes in your inventory (birthday minipets), and getting messages in the chat box, so how about you take your item to an npc for wrapping and you tell them the name of the player character you want to send it to. The item is then taken from your inventory and wrapped (with whatever fee). The next time the recipient logs in, they get the box in their inventory with a green message in the chat box saying "[Player x] has sent you a present". The wrapped present is customised to the recipient so it can't be used in scams. No trade involved.

Do the following steps:
1. Put armors, weapons, minis, etc into wrapped gifts.
2. Stack them (assuming behave the same way)
3. ?????
4. Profit

Thats exactly what i was thinking of but i couldn't get my fingers to type it. 110% safe and it gets to the person intended.

This isn't the first time that this idea has been suggested:

http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/s...php?t=10077373

This was one of the most original ideas I hadever seen suggested on these forums.

I liked the idea then, and I still like it now, but I doubt it will ever happen.

If they do this, it would be nice if you make a present, you can move the mouse cursor over it and it says in a box what's in it. That way you can keep track of your presents. But if you're given a present, you have to open it to see what's inside.

Then botters/gold farmers would have an easy way to send themselves items from their others accounts.

There's a reason Guild Wars doesn't have a "mail service" for sending items; it's too easy to abuse. Don't think it's just something they forgot.

Again, many botters likely have multiple systems running at once. I saw a train of bots in Bergen international the other day, all moved at the exact same time to the exact same npc's. It may have been coincidence...random syncing of different peoples' bots...but it's very likely that botters have multiple accounts and systems. They can just trade straight across, hopping from one computer to another. Why should we have to go without such a great idea because it would make the botters' lives just a tad bit easier?(oh, and they'd have to spend money to do what they can do now for free..not only that but if the NPC is only in one town, that would take time away from their farming to load the new town, talk to the NPC, send the package, etc.)

This would benefit us more than botters. In fact, it may very well be inefficient for botters to use.

well... not if they wrap up a stack of ectos....

Yeah because you can't transfer a stack of ectos to another player through trade.

Right.

Customized ectos? I doubt that they'd be stackable on top of regular ectos, so there's another storage slot taken up - and would the rare material trader recognize them as ectos? They'd have to program those traders (mats, dye, runes, armorers) to recognize those things.

In a perfect world, it'd be a fun idea. But there are a whole boatload of d-bags who have nothing better to do than figure out ways to scam others.

Hm... I don't see much use for this, if the item is not going to be seen in anywhere else but your inventory and the gift's recipient inventory.

Well, the time when you wait until they hit 'show offer' works as a gift wrapping now.

I would giftwrap all my stuff, give it all away to random people getting high pretending I'm Santa Claus.

It's a completely different (and much better) feeling when you give someone a closed present than a wrapped present.

Implementation suggestion: disallow trading of such presents for anything - the receiving person should have empty offer window, no cash and no items. Possible acceptable exception - exchange for another wrapped gift.
