It's hard to play PvP with a slow or recalcitrant computer. Your team ends up short due to your character's lag or disconnects.

With a PvE character, you can hench a lot of the game and enjoy it.

Depends wha you call a slow computer, mine is 5 years old
amd 1800
2 gig memory
128 graphics card
cable internet connection 4mb

I have played right through prophesies, factions and most of nightfall with and without parties.
Not found many problems, some lag in busy areas but not all the time usually its festivals when areas are full and servers loaded.

PVP I have tried a few times its not really my thing but may get into it with the right people some day.

Why not try out some pvp and see how it goes you could always look for people willing to give you a chance and see how bad a lag you have.

enjoy

I agree with gremlin. I have a Dell Dimension 2400. Most people told me it would be impossible to play GW on my computer. I'm glad i didn't listen to them. I bought Factions a year ago and played thru Shing Jea Island just fine. Once I reached the Marketplace, I started haven't issues with my video card. (Yeah, what card? It was simply an onboard chip on the motherboard)

I bought an $80 PCI slot card and installed it and all my problems went away. I can play GW just fine, including PvP with no lag. All on my 5-6 year old Dell.

The only issue I have is with EotN. I meet the minimum system requirements on the box, but fail the recommended requirements. Some of the dungeons (not all) are laggy for me. Especially the ones with extreme mobs of enemies. **cough ** snowmen **cough**. It doesn't matter. I just take 4 fire eles and a monk along and wait for them to kill all the snowmen while I'm standing there with my 3 fps rate refreshing the battle scene.

I think RAM is the biggest factor in how fast you load.

My laptop doesn't have enough and it takes a while to load areas, which is particularly bad in RA because I'd show up either after the timer has finished or just before.

If your looking to make a new char, given your slow system, I would sugest a war. Simply put they can be more forgiving in PvE if they do not get thier skills to activate as quick.

A ranger needs quick reflexes to handle interupts but with a pet or conditions they can also work well for you.

The chaining skills of a sin could be a problem for you but you really need to test them all to find out. Try lvling them each to 10, should take no time at all and give you an idea about how they react to your slow system.

RAM is definitely the biggest load speed and lag factor. I only have a 1024Mb RAM but I run it fine. But I hava a 3.8Ghz driver. If you want, you can send it into Best Buy's Geek Squad and I think you can get them to install more RAM chips. For a fee of course. And price of the chips.

If your happy with the game settings and dont want to reduce settings any more then its on to what you can improve on your computer.

Its important to limit what software is running on startup.

Nearly everything you install will want to run all the time "they think its helpeful" but not to gamers.
Anything on the right hand side of the task bar is in the startup and using memory that could be used for running guild wars.

My startup "Start, run "type msconfig" has 3 items only"
My virus killer/firewall file
Nvidia graphics card file
and a thrustmaster games keyboard I use for gw

Some graphics cards can be set for performance or quality you could get a little gain in fps here.

You can also make windows display a little faster by removing the fancy bells and whistles.
Taking windows xp as an example you can set it up for performance by turning off the fancy bits like shadows displaying icons in the max number of colours etc
right click my computer, select properties, advanced, performance settings.

Defrag drive helps a lot sometimes too.

You can get into turning off windows services and tweaking the internet connection but these take more though before trying.

Thanks so much for the advise guys. Even though..i dont really understand computer stuff.. hehe
I was wondering more about which profession to make. Right now my ritualist is my favourite but im thinking of going back to my ele
I'm also thinking about making either a warrior or ranger..but do they even have good skills/armor in factions?

I blasted my way through most of the games early stages as a necro minion master.

Then I started a ranger ritualist my idea being to set up 2 spirits and stand with them firing arrows.
That worked well through much of factions then I moved through ele/monk and mesmer as secondaries finaly settling on ranger monk, not as easy as the necro but still pretty good.

Mesmer still my favourite class though with necro close second

Just don't make a PvP Ritualist with a pet like you said you did with PvE in the other thread. You'll be laughed out of every game you play.
