Aggressive Hippopotami LVL26 in Arbor Bay (HM)
Longasc
I am vanquishing this area at the moment.
Ventari's island with the sylvari tree is surrounded by huge groups of hippopotami. They are hammer warriors and use enraged smash.
OK, if this is already well known, please delete... I think it is new, I never saw them in normal mode.

Here are the Hippos!
All level 26.
Hippos, fullscreen
520 foes, Arbor Bay hard mode. Something was odd. I had a spawn of 4 packs of some 20+ Cryptwings near a chest. The number is some 150 higher than the one on the Wiki. And the (ressed) Simian is still alive after I vanquished (?).
And one more, Hippo in closeup, only covered by Jin.

So are they charmable?I bet they arent Just like the spiders in pre*twitch*
AlienFromBeyond
Nope, not charmable. Wouldn't really be fair to have a level 26 pet now would it?

In the Nightfall preview there were Hippo's that you could indeed capture.Unfortunately they were removed for being "Too Complex".Srsly.
Actually heres the reason why the removed it on the Guild Wars Wiki
Basicly it was removed because Anet couldn't simply reskin it and throw it into GW:EN as "new content".

The Hippo featured during the Nightfall World Preview Event, ever it was removed before release because it was a model/skeleton that was only useful for the hippo.keep the number of tame-able pets to a reasonable number and keep the asset list manageable,(this is relevant when you're in a map and someone brings a pet and you have to download the assets for the creature,) the hippo was unfortunately removed. |
Lyonette
hah, they remove the hippo from nightfall for technical reasons and now they show up in eye of the north... not charmable of course... what gives? Y_Y

Making something into a pet and making it an attackable NPC involves different systems. As far as I remember, the hippo had complications as a pet. If you're really curious, search around for some previous discussions. Let's just not start another Anet hate-fest.

Oh by the way, this post is a part of this thread.
Karyuu
Yep, like that. I'm saying this isn't the only thread to have been made on the subject (or contain posts that veer off into the WHYY ANET WHYYYY?! direction )

I saw them in that area as well. Arbor Bay was not an easy area to vanquish. I had 20+ Incubi spawn in one spot just as others in this thread have said. They're annoying little buggers in HM.

It's such a tease...

Hippos can be very aggressive. But you shouldn't hit them.
Leave them alone so they can multiply. They are endangered.

Yea I had one of those Hipopotomuseses.. lol I was really sad when I got in there after it went gold and it was gone ;( lol I just want to say Hipopotomuseses.. lol Glad to see its used again, but not too surprised its not tamable. Same with the Panda from Factions was lost to PCness... Actually I am wondering what will happen to the polar bear once it goes on endangered list...
dancing gnome
I don't think it was removed because they can't reskin it. I think it was removed because the model used is different from every other pet, and so when loading both a Polar Bear and a Black Bear, the model is the same. Or a Moa Bird, Flamingo, Strider, Crane all use the same model. Same with Stalkers, Lynx and I THINK the tigers. So in PvP when loading each model you only need to load 6? (Bird, Bear, Flightless Bird, Lizard, Cat, Wolf). The hippo's model is so different to the others it added pressure they didn't consider worth the addition, (my understanding anyway).

I think the Hippo's Hunger would be a great green hammer. :P

Well now that they ARE using the hippo, theres no excuse to say "we cant use this elsewhere".
Since they are using it as an enemy. They've reused other pets as enemies already (Raven, Wolf, Bear, Lynx, Moa, Warthog)

Not quite, Lyra. All the pets share skeletons with one another, as mentioned previously. And skeletons, as well as animations, are assets that may take quite the amount of resources if their number is large. The hippo's skeletal rig is unique, and is not shared with any other current pet. To avoid increasing the use of resources (such as system memory), the Anet team has decided to pull the hippo off the list of pets.
Just because a hippo now appears elsewhere in the world, still doesn't mean that it is now going to work with Anet's pet system.
This is, of course, only as I understand it and open to corrections.

I think the real reason is that Hippo pets while looking good in their natural environment, would look dumb elsewhere.
gloria vander belt
so why were the panders taken away? they would run the same mechanics as a Polr Bear or Black Bear!
as for a tamable hippo the idea was good as these creatures are africas 4th most dangerous

nechronius
Panda I believe was removed in part due to political/cultural pressure.
As for a hippo looking dumb out of its environment... the same could be said about a polar bear in the desert. Yet there it is.

*sigh* Hippo was the one I really wanted in NF, but didn't find out about until after it was over, but got my dervish there as fast as I could, only to find they'd been replaced. Didn't get a pet for her until after she'd finished the game in the end.
Ah well, at least they're in the game. And Nechronius does have a point

How is it that the hippo was removed from NF for being endangered (cruelty to animals) BUT in GW:EN we have to slaughter them.

I want a pet amoeba.
Doo eet Gaile! Make it happen!
Tell the dev team it requires zero resources to manage!
Well maybe a special tag floating over it's name that says 'best pet evar'!

How can it tail blobbily after you?!
It is too tiny.
It would probably sit on your shoe and jump off to attack enemies with it's insane amoebaishness ferocity.
Edit: I speeled amoeba wrong.

Really though, I don't understand how having them as monsters is less server strain opposed to pets? I'd like to see some charts/percents/numbers anything to clear it up, show us what the true difference is.

Honestly who cares if it is charmable or not? If they make it a tamable pet then you are just going to see tons of people have them. Just be glad that they put the thing back into the game at all and have yourself a nice little laugh every time you kill them!

The hippo was not removed from Nightfall. Nor was it even handled as a "cannot kill" endangered species. Perhaps you are thinking of the panda, which we were unable to offer as a charmable creature because of legal issues in China. |
-.-
and in the period between GWEN and Factions, about 1 1/4 year, the Phoenix skin was only used for Phoenixes. Can't we just add another skeleton for pets to PvP? Or as I said, remove the Crab skeleton lol.
Ofcourse we can think of different skins for reusing the same skeleton. Like a Purple Hippo with wings on his back. Rainbow Hippos could also be nice.
Hmm someone listed the different skeletons, but forgot a few I think. Also the Warthog isn't reused for any other pet, ever since Prophesies. Hippos and Warthogs could perhaps even use the same skeleton.
6 Cats (Stalker, Lynx, Lion, Lioness, Tiger, White Tiger) (these might have different subskeletons)
3 Walking bird (strider, Moa, Black Moa, White Moa)
3 Crabs (White Crab, Lurker, Reef Lurker)
2 Lizards (Dune Lizard. Iguana)
5 Wolves (Common Wolf, Snow Wolf, Black Wolf, White Wolf, Hyena)
2 Bears (Black Bear, Polar Bear)
2 Small walking birds (Crane, Flamingo)
4 Gliding Birds (Phoenix, Rainbow Phoenix, Raven, Mountain Eagle)
2 Rats (Jahai Rat, Albino Rat)
1 Crocodile (Crocodile)
1 Pig (Warthog)
1 Spider (Black Widow)
3 Hippo(Common Hippo, Purple Flying Hippo, Rainbow Hippo)

.-. what about the minipets?
You could effectively fill your bags with minipets and force other players to load TONS of models/skeletons/animations/textures. The minis are essentially the same, just scaled down.
1 more unique model won't kill the system. I dont buy it. Otherwise get rid of the baby moa.
