When do we get to find out what 'rewards' we get for filling HoM
Kelsey Cain
With my interest in GW waining knowing that GW2 will eventually replace it, the only thing that keeps me even slightly interested in playing at the moment is the promise of unique rewards in GW2 for achievements stored in the Hall of monuments.
I think it's about time we were given full details of what rewards will be available and what needs to be done to obtain them.
It was a bold decision by Arenanet to effectively 'replace' GW and with a follow up and I am sure that they are fully aware that if people do lose interest, by the time GW2 comes out, a large percentage of the core player base will have found another game to play and will not return easily once they have invested time elsewhere.
I'm sure that there are a lot of players who feel the way I do who have had a good time but are about to move on or have already left.

Why would people leave for a game that isn't even slated to come out until 2009-2010.
I imagine Anet will let us in on what we will be getting once the date for GW2 becomes more concrete and closer.

The most successful persistent online game, (in terms of longevity) Ultima had its sequel canceled and can you envisage WOW getting a sequel anytime soon?

Here is my thoughts on the HOM. GW2 is not going to be successful unless it brings in new players. A lot of current GW players will fade out or quit playing. So, for all those who A) Did not own GW before starting GW2, B) Don't pimp their HOM, or C) Don't have GWEN, they will not see any of the benefits. My take is that whatever these items are in GW2, they probably will be quite disappointing to most people. There is NO WAY they can make a game and market to new players by giving some uber leet status/items to us. In my opinion it will be things such as what you get from collectors editions or bonus items (chaos, glowy hands, special dances, /bonus weapons like we have, etc etc). I'm sorry, I just can't imagine the rewards being that spectacular.

ah gross. square-enix's idea of an mmo is "what will keep my players subscribing for longer" - thats probably the reason why ur character walks about the world at the speed of a drugged up slug (i mean for gods sakes it takes u 20 minutes to walk about town and maybe check 1 shop out).
as long as square have that mentality, they wont be getting any money from me, their next mmo could ooze FF-factor and FF-esque style. but if its still about presenting a VERY slow game to keep me paying., no way..just no way..

I have a feeling that whatever the rewards are, they will be highly over-hyped, very poorly implemented, and will leave a lot of pissed off players disappointed.
oh wait, that was HoM..........

They have more important things to worry about while developing GW2 than what rewards Kelsey Cain is going to get from his HoM.
Seriously, at least 2 more years until the game comes out, there is no way they are releasing any definate rewards for it yet. It'll likely change in the next year, and then they'll just be accused of more false promises. Just have some patience, EotN has only been out for a short time. Like they've even started thinking about what the rewards will be yet.

If there has been excessive hype for HoM benefits in GW2 it has been generated in the heads of the players (or I have missed some crucial dev interview in which case I stand corrected and would love to get an URL).
Think about it, if you are anticipating gold (or whatever the currency in GW2 is), weapons or armor with amazing stats etc. I think you will be sorely disappointed. I highly doubt they will give old players a big, concrete advantage in a new game just because they finished all campaigns, explored the maps of three continents or were drunk for 10,000 minutes. The most I'm expecting are some cosmetic customization options which, as can be seen in all the armor threads, will never please everybody, so once the announcement is made an ANet flamefest is bound to ensue.

Neverwinter Nights. However, that wasn't really so much of an online game. It was a standard RPG that happened to be able to be played online in very limited servers.

I just hope Anet takes their time on guild wars 2. The reason I say that is because I want them to add in a lot of content and make the game really big and not a failure I don't mind if GW2 comes out in 2011, as long as they put every minute of work into the game.

Based on the information given in the back cover of GWEN, we'll be treated to special weapons, heroes, and minipets. So we're talking a superficial reward to just give us that "Hey, we've played the original GW for 1+ years!" status.
It's not too bad though. Better something than nothing, right?

EPO Bot
I bet it will be purely cosmetic.
TempusReborn
I think most people would be happy with superficial awards anyway (Like the old Mini's, Armour and Weapons SKINS) And Im pretty sure these would be untradeable. What else could they give us which isn't ridiculously unfair?
Spellforge
I'd like one of the unlocks to be a mini-whatever your character was in GW1 in their elite armour.
It would be like a mini spirit of you anscestor walking around watching what your doing
(So I could have a mini male warrior in Luxon 15k armour)
And whenever you jump (because you will be able to in GW2) it will give a little speach bubble saying "Back in my day we use to have to walk round obstacles"

A mini GW1 pet that does all emotes you do perhaps?

i wanna speculate ^^
heroes u put in HoM => grandsons/-daughters of them... free unique heroes ^^
destroyers weapons => unique customized green weapon just like /bonus
minipets => unique "customized" minipets XD
armor => acces to reskinned elite armors BWAHAHAHAHA!

With tongue in cheek, here's how it will most likely go:
"Man, I wish HoM would give you some new unique weapons in GW2"
--> "I overheard someone in Lion's Arch talking about HoM, GW2 and unique weapons, pretty cool"
--> "A buddy told me that HoM might give you access to unique weapons in GW2"
--> "I hear that a dev interview mentioned the possibility of gaining uniques in GW2 through HoM"
--> "Gaile said you would get unique weapons in GW2 if you fill your HoM"
--> "I can't wait for the new uniques promised to us by ANet!"
--> "WTF, no uniques? They lied to us!"

Time to put on those specticles,
and read while others speculate
about the number of ventricles
in the hearts of demon apes!
Four! No, Six! It doesn't matter
when in the thick of battle:
blood spills with the same splatter
at the moment of death's rattle.
Guild Wars two! What will we see?
A bunch of the same or not...
Leave it alone, let it be
'til we see what we've got.
Hall of monuments is being made
for descentants in 250 years
so why care I for the future charade
and time's turning of the gears?
Speculation breeds not but rumor
(often mistaken as being factual)
It festers like a malignant tumor...
nothing's "promised" or contractual
So quit the bitching, shut yer face
and stow the negativity.
Whining dishonors this hallowed place
and stifles the flow of creativity.
Instead of bemoaning what might
not be in your great collection,
let your imagination take flight
and give ANet some suggestions.

Either way I am happy with GW. I have played it just close to 2 years and will be playing as long as they let me.

So letting Kelsey Cain know exactly how she will earn her rewards and what those rewards will be, is something they should be worrying about.
Longasc
Still, this is probably the last thing they will be thinking about.
They first have to make the game and THEN they can decide what is a reasonable reward for our GW1 achievements.
They cannot do this before they balanced/tested the game. A rough idea might exist, but nothing more.
I just try to maximize everything - there is of course the danger that we might consider the rewards trivial or I moved on to another game till GW2 got released.

Guild Wars 2 will have a completely different engine. We will not be porting art from a years-old game into the brand new game. So the transfer of the actual FoW armour isn't what is referred to in the Hall of Monuments reference. An inheritance does not necessary mean carrying down an item; it can also be a means to provide you with the wherewithall to acquire an item in the future. (reference to FFX-2 btw.)
Edit: On-Topic, does it really matter? We know this about it....
-Will NOT be max damage or good weapons
-Will NOT be handed down armor
-Will be certain pets/heroes
So we are looking at a handful of holiday hats and a Koss hero...yay?

I highly doubt they are far enough into game development to even consider what these rewards will be.

What do I want? I want a pony. A black one with a mane that ripples in the wind. But I'll be ok with a max weapon right out the gate(/bonus weapons pwn in Pre) or something similar.

I'd at least like to know what benefits are given so I can prioritise the HoM upgrades I get so that I get what I want most in GW2 amongst the various benefits.

I am figuring sometime around July next year when the first alphas and betas get going. I dont think even Anet themselves know what they will be at this point. Someone somewhere prob has a idea in mind for them, but nothing encoded yet. Prob Jeff. lol He like concepts. lol
BUt We will prob see a limited list by the time a beta comes out, and maybe by 2nd beta a larger list... Once live the full list I'm sure will be published.
Point is its a long ways away. don't worry your head over it yet. Indeed I have put some things in cause I wanted too in THIS game, not GW2. the GW2 perk is coincidental at this point as NO ONE knows, not even anet, what that may be yet...

One simple question that perhaps Gaile could answer then. Will the rewards be scaled or will there just be a generic?
Will the rewards work like this:
Option 1
5 white minipets in HOM = minipet a
5 green minpets in HOM = minipet b
5 gold minipets in HOM = minipet c
or this:
Option 2
5 minipets on HOM = minipet
If the system chosen is similar to option 1, then there is the ability to reward players who dedicate the rarer GW minipets (Vizu/Panda/beetle) etc to get a much rarer GW2 minipet. Same principle applies to armour/weapons and to some extent titles.
If option 2 is chosen however all players will receive the same reward, so your player who dedicates 5 of the rarest in game mini's gets the same as a player who dedicates 5 white's.
Knowing this information now will have a big effect on how players 'prepare for GW2' - at the moment it would appear that the blind are leading the blind.
The developers either don't know what they are going to do or are unwilling to release that information at this time.
I really do hope it's the latter because the idea of a games designer introducing a major game feature without really having though out how to implement it doesn't fill me with confidence that GW2 will eliminate many of the design flaws of GW. That said, it would appear that that has already happened on many occasions in the past, not being able to max out the sunspear and lightbringer titles (until they thought of something) being two good examples.

At one point I hoped Anet would let us know what the nature of the rewards are per each title, that way you knew if you wanted to spend the next year, say, pursuing the Savior track, or just let it go. True for all titles.
In the end I decided to let their relationship to GW2 go, since I believe all GW2 rewards from HoM will be akin to collector's edition things, unique minipet, hero outfit, dance style, etc. Personally I dont see those sorts of rewards being worth the time involved to get a title only for the reward in GW2. Rather instead, pursue the titles you want to pursue since you enjoy doing them, or are simply getting them done through regular play.
It would be hugely appreciated though if Anet could sort this out and let us know, so we can decide if we want to work on a title we dont have specifically for that reason.
