Hey,

I am a very new player to this game and I am playing a mesmer. I am only level 10 and I am trying out some PvP in the Ascalon Random Arenas. But I am wondering how to actually kill stuff?

90% of the time I am easily killed by almost any melee class. Especially Dervish can just wtfpwn me without even trying. Warriors and Dervish just run up to me and start hitting me, until I die. I cannot run, and I can hardly hurt them. The only skill I have is Empathy which does little bits of damage, but not nearly enough to kill them before they just whack me to the ground.

I can quite easily kill an unsuspecting caster-profession by hitting him with Power Spike and Backfire, and I can also interrupt their spells, but I really don't stand a chance against anything which decides to come up close and whack me with a sword/hammer/axe/small stick.

Please help?

Generally, a Mesmer does a midline offensive support role, and unless you build directly against melee, you won't really kill anything.

Also, playing 1v1 in Ascalon Arena is hardly representative of PvP mesmer usage as a whole, so don't base your GvG mesmer build on that.

Ok the early Arenas are not balanced and there are people exploiting it.

1. You can death level pets to level 20 the pets alone can own you
2. Dervish Ritualists Paragons and Sins can get max armor in there campaigns and run to the arena

Edit-(Anyone born outside of tyria can get max armor)

Tyrian born characters are screwed. It should be fixed but never will get A-nets attention.

You can still practice there but if you get owned this is why. My suggestion is get to level 20 and then go to the Battle Isles you will have a better chance. You can practice builds in RA and not worry to much about being trash talked Etc.. Good luck to you.

Thank god I've never yet encoutered level 20 pets.

I did see quite some level 11 people though

Anyway, this time I added "Imagined Burden" to my list and I could actually fight the warriors now. I also got "energy spike" from Yak's Bend quest and after 2 hours of practise I am fairly decent at interrupting. I alreayd killed a couple of casters purely by interrupting their spells with Energy Spike, backfire, and my staff. I also put some points in healing spells and I find out it is sometimes better to hang back and cast this on my teammates. I also see that when they run into battle and will get hit soon, casting this spell on them can save their lives. I mean that spell that gives +4 regen for 10 seconds.

I still get pwned by wammo's or W/E sometimes though They hit hard and just won't die.

Most ppl in ascalon arena have their char ran to end game place and got some elite skill + max armor. Its hard for new players to beat those cheaters.

Against melee illusion line is your best bet, but i doubt you have skill such as ineptitude+clumsiness. You can try degen+run around, make sure u have something that can interupt their heals.

Overall mesmers are support char and they are not that great in 1v1 since you are mostly reactive, not proactive.

When you're pvping in most arenas, the only chance you have against melee is to kite like a madman, and hope that ur monk will heal you. Most of the time, id focus on spellcasters, since you can exact the most damage on them, (unless you have Visions of Regret). The arenas in PvE areas are really unbalanced nowadays with the major influx of ppl running to droks and getting max armor, runes, weapons and skills that can completely decimate your party. In all honesty, you would be better off not doing PvP until you are more experienced with PvE and have at least 1, if not 2 characters at level 20 and a TON of the skills for at least one profession unlocked.
