Character highlight
BruskoKariskoff
Anyone ever get really annoyed when they mouse over a character and all of the sudden, that character glows so bright they're hard to make out? Yes, it lets you know that, hey, thats who you're about to select. But I've noticed most characters become so lit up, most of their features are washed out. I've played around with gamma to lower this, but it doesn't seem to be the factor. What is the communities thoughts on this small, but kind of annoying detail? Also, i play in windowed mode all the time, and you can't really change gamma in windowed mode. Anyway, lemme know!

Have you tried manually changing the settings on your display?
I mean the knobs and buttons on your monitor.

BruskoKariskoff
yup, done it all, but the glare on chars just seems too strong. I am using an LCD monitor, so maybe its got something to do with just over glaring graphics
Karyuu
There are some zones where I found the bloom effect to be too strong, and it washed out the character models even without the mouse hovering over them. For me, anyway. However, the number of places I've experienced this in is so small, that I can't even remember where it was :P
If this happens for you all over however, I'd say it's some local setting on your monitor or graphics configuration.

Well, you're right though karyuu, it is in "some" places. especially those that are just in really well lit areas. So like i said, its not like "omg i r blind" more or less, wow, i can't get a good screen shot of some things in this area.
Karyuu
Could you name some zones so I could check it out again as well? :]
BruskoKariskoff
areas of UW, some gwen dungeons. I'd have to go to more areas to find more, but there are quite a few of them
Zeek Aran
A certain dungeon was too dark for me to see anything in a certain tunnel... and then snow, desolation, and highlighted characters are blinding, but it's usually only if they are in the sun.
BruskoKariskoff
darkness can be solved by turning up gamma. but im glad you notice the highlighting too

my light skinned ele and my canthan female monk have this problem (as well as my rit sometimes).....my ele has the problem almost all of the time, while my others have it after they die (sometimes after the 3rd death or so)....they glow very brightly....but only on my monitor. I play with my hubby so I can look over at his and see no problems, but on mine; ugh.
I have included some screens of my ele (dont seem to be able to find the ones of my rit or monk at the moment).
You can see that others in the screens look just fine....sosuke, dunky, nogru, etc and one even has my hubby (dervish red dyed) and they all look quite normal. This doesnt happen with most of my others, and I have adjusted my computer, played with the graphics card settings etc until I was blue in the face....no idea WHY it happens, it just does (and they was a thread about this a while back I remember since I included that last shot in that thread....)

AWESOME examples cosyfiep

Erm... isn't that supposed to happen when you highlight stuff?
BruskoKariskoff
Yes, but does it need to go to that extreme? to the point it washes out most if not all of the details?
Karyuu
Well, seeing as how this doesn't happen everywhere and all the time, my guess is that this degree of the effect wasn't intentional - rather, a bug or some similar technical issue.
cosyfiep
thanks....and finally found one of my rit. I combined it with the way she normally looks (left) and after a few deaths (right)....you will notice she is of very dark skin on the left and on the right her hair is white and she is showing only a modest tan. (they were taken with the same computer setting and no changes made to either the image or the computer between screenshots though she does have different armor, the shoes are the same in both shots).
It doesnt matter what area my characters are in, dark, light, cantha, elonia....it just happens-----and I dont have them highlighted for it to happen either.

I think it has a lot to do with the armor they are wearing or perhaps the dye colors + skin tones
IlikeGW
Turn off post process effects in your graphics options. That controls bloom... (unfortunately controls a few other minor effects) but it's worth it to get rid of the hideous side effects of bloom...

Thanx IlikeGW i will give that ago next i log in.

nope, since my ele is fair skinned and my rit is dark...I just happen to have the screens of them .....it happens with my ele all the time almost, and like I said after my others die a few times they start to glow brightly. (my rit didnt glow before she died in the second half of that shot, she looked normal like on the left...but after she died ---think it was 45dp, she was a candle in the dark!).
My ele is from prophecies, the rit...canthan of course, no idea why these two seem to have the worst time of it out of 13 female and 2 male characters (I have a shot of one of my mesmers like this too, she doesnt usually glow)...and I dont usually highlight my characters when I take screenshots (almost never), but even then they usually dont glow like this.
post processing is OFF on my computer ALL THE TIME.....so thats not it (had to change that for when I was doing screen shots of my male rit who NEVER glows!)

So you're speculating the "bloom" might be connected with Death Penalty? I'm not sure, because i notice this in towns and outposts as well.
cosyfiep
no, I just notice it on my other characters after they have died, my ele almost always has the problem....I just see the difference more when I play and they die and look a LOT brighter...dont think its just dp that does it, but something changes when they die for it to happen then and not before that.
arcady
I don't get anything like this when I look. There might be a minor glow, but I'm not conscious of even seeing that.
Onarik Amrak
Maybe it's a compatibility problem with certain video cards?
bebe
I have those issues to. It's most likely just light skinned characters + brightness is some areas on gw = super glowingness!
Meh. >.<

The other big function of post processor effects is drunkeness. I usually have it off, not a big deal.

I keep post process effects off most of the time, and always choose a slightly ruddy skin tone for my Caucasian characters.
