I'm Thinking about buying it...

I just don't know which one... Why does an expansion pack cost more than just plain guild wars? Does factions or nightfall contain all the content from just guild wars? can I buy both factions nightfall and whatnot? I don't know a thing about guild wars but those were some questions I have before purchasing...

The main reason the expansion pack costs more than the game itself is because the games have been out a lot longer, so naturally their prices decrease. While the expansion pack came out a couple months ago, so it hasn't decreased much if at all yet.
And each campaign is its own game. If you buy Factions, you will get a totally different game than if you buy Prophecies or Nightfall. That being said, you can link them together. So if you buy Prophecies and later on decide to buy Factions, you can tie the Factions content to your Prophecies account and you can get access to both games that way.

So why not just make 3 separate games? Whats the point of just regular guild wars? is that a separate campaign too?
RPGmaniac
Yea, the regular "Guild Wars" is actually "Guild Wars: Prophecies" and it was the first one made. And if they made 3 separate games, they wouldn't be linked like they are now and that would split the community.

Anet also released a bundle (called "Platinum" edition) that has the original campaign (Prophecies) and the Eye of the North expansion. And amazon(co.uk at least) has also a great deal with this bundle and the Nightfall campaign at £50!

They are 3 seperate complete games. But if you own more than one of them, your characters can move between the campaigns and play both games.
Each campaign has their unique features that characters from all three campaigns can play.
Guild Wars sells cheaper because it is older, but it is still a nice game to learn how to play Guild Wars.

I bought Guild Wars: Factions about a year ago, and it bored the shit out of me. I gave up playing a week later.
I bought Guild Wars: Prophecies a month ago, and I loved it! However, leveling up went slow and walking around in the barren ashes of what used to be Ascalon and it's surrounding provinces doesn't suit me... also, fighthing Charr became boring quite soon...
I bought Guild Wars: Nightfall two days ago and I'm LOVING IT!!! Dervish is the most interesting, and most cool-looking class I've ever seen in ANY mmo, you level up quite quickly, you get lots of information and trainings right away at the start of the game, and you also get Heroes, which are like AI-controlled characters you can completely control. Also the main enemy seems to be Corsairs, which are african-looking pirates really, but I can tell you that I always prefer fighting humanoid creatures over beast-or plant-creatures. Also, the environment in Nightfall is absolutely beautiful, walking around in a lusch (sp?) jungle really beats the Prophecies areas..
Guild Wars: Eye of the North is an expansion pack that fits with all three main campaigns, but you can only play it if you already have a level 20 character. So I would not recommend you buy that just yet, I haven't got it myself either.
I would recommend you purchase Nightfall, because my farvorites are:
#1: Guild Wars: Nightfall
#2: Guild Wars: Prophecies
#3: Guild Wars: Factions
Good luck!

Think of it this way.
The 3 different games give you access to 3 different continents. The same basic layout exists in each game. If you buy multiple games, your characters can travel from one continent to another (thus why its 3 seperate games).

Also remember that there are skills/spells only available from certain games.
When you buy all four games (Prophicies, Factions, Nightfall, and EotN) and link them, your player characters can obtain and use all the skills available.
