Gold Item Drops in HM

I have just begun work on Vanquishing All four Campaigns, and began with Prophecies. I just completed the six or seven explorable areas near and around Old Ascalon.

It's nice because I can keep track of how many gold items drops I get in relation to how many foes I kill. So far, I am averaging just under 1%. That is, I get about one gold item for every 100 foes killed. This includes drops from locked chests. In fact, I almost never get a gold from a locked chest. I nearly always get grapes from those.

What I do is when I vanquish an area, I check the number of foes I killed, and then check my inventory for how many gold drops I got. It has been right about 1 drop per 100 foes.

My question is this: Is this what I should expect throughout the rest of Vanquishing? If so, how am I ever going to max out my wisdom title track? According to the guildwars wiki, there are only about 31,000 foes total. At 1% drop rate, I will only get 310 golds! This will barely get me past level 2 on my wisdom title track.

I guess I can always buy unid golds in towns and outposts.

Can I expect to get more gold drops as I make progress in vanquishing other areas?

Its called chest running... just not in Ascalon...FoW for example

BTW, the foes re-populate the area after you leave so you can kill an infinite number of foes.

True, true.

But is 1% gold drops still what I should expect across all campaigns? Also, with the gold drop rate from locked chests being so low for me, I'm not sure what chest runs will accomplish other than helping with my treasure hunter and luck/unlucky title tracks.

I've been keeping track of gold drops from locked chests as well, and also lockpick retention rate. I get about one gold drop for every 8 locked chests opened. In HM, my lockpick retention rate is 22%. So, I use three picks to open four chests, or six picks to open eight chests, getting me one gold item.

At 1200g per pick from discount merchant, each gold item is costing me 7200g. To get the wisdom title track, I'd be better off buying unid golds. I see them all all the time in Kamadan...7 unid for 5-7k. To get treasure hunter, I could do chest runs on the 600g chests in NM, getting all grapes.

Actually youve been lucky.

My ratio is more like 1 for every 300 kills.

The title takes a long time and a fair bit of cash to achieve. You can up your chances of gaining gold drops by fighting with smaller teams in Hard Mode maps. A 1-2 man team can farm golds 2x faster in Old Ascalon vs your standard 4man team.

You might end up getting more gold drops in the later portions of the game as they are supposed to be harder. But to max out wisdom/treasure hunter is to do a lot of farming.

You can effectively up that percentage by giving all of your gold drops--still unidentified of course--to the character you want to have the title. Also it helps to get the free Treasure Chests in Elona. Those usually net lots of gold items your first or second time through them for each character.

1% gold drop chance seems very low to me, going by my own Hard Mode experience. I've never done any testing so I could be way off but if I had to give an estimate, I would say more like 1/30 or 1/40 chance. Whether or not they're Merchant-worthy garbage is another matter, naturally..

All my golds are IDed by the same character, but she still breaks almost everything she salvages.

I get over 60% gold from locked chests.

Golds were not affected by the loot scaling update. Playing in a party of 8 means you are getting 1/8 the amount of golds you could get my soloing. If you really want that wisdom title, and you don't want to have to pay for the golds... i suggest you do some HM solo farming, such as with a 55 monk or 330 ritualist.

Serious? Hard mode chests drop at least 50% golds for me.

Best way to get the Wisdom title is to buy the 7=5k things. It benefits the seller, and you have a chance to get great items (like a 20/20, +30, 15^50, dead bow I got once). And at about 750-ish gold per item, it's basically like a chest run with a guarantee of a gold drop. Sure, the items are usually crap or only have a mod or two that's salvageable, but if you want the title, it's the fastest and easiest way. Might be the cheapest, too.

I'm amazed. In my farming I get at least a 10-20% gold drop ratio. I've been having great luck with it. I noticed last night that in HM I had killed 16 monsters in the area I was in, and 4 golds, 2 blue, and 4 purples dropped.

I was wondering how much money I was making per hour doing the run that I was doing, at the same time I was zoned in on Prison Break, and then Heroes. In 2 hours while playing basically during commercials only I made just over 10k.

In just over 3 days I'm up to 102k. Mostly from merching goods. Including dozens upon dozens of golds. I'll have to see how many I've ID'd on that character.

I get 5+ golds per snowman dungeon run in HM, chests included.

Probably the fastest way to level those two titles.

That's a lot. What was your party size? I usually ended up without any golds when completing this dungeon over and over again with full hero/hench party. (I don't open locked chests -- it's not worth the money imo.

Yeah, I broke down and started doing this two days ago. So far, I've bought about 100 golds. From them, I have salvaged about 20 perfect mods for various weapons, and a Superior Rune of Vigor!!!!! I merch most everything for about 200-300g, so each gold only costs me about 400-500g. Much cheaper than lockpicks!

NOTE* since its extremely easy to determine most mods on unidentified items it is unlikely you will get any good mods from purchasing unident items. You may get some nice inscriptions but no perfect HP mods.

Usually, you equip the item and look at relevant stuff. I expect the following should be possible:
-life mods: just take a look at your life bar.
-elemental weapons: use a conjure element and see if anything changes while whacking
-zealous, vampiric: look for the -1 degen on health or the -1 energy regen
-energy: lower/heighten your life and watch your energy for changes

In theory, at least. I just ID my golds immediately...

I've made about 100K from tyrian guardian, avg about 6-10 golds per mission, including chests, mostly merchant fodder, but got about 25 or so points towards my wisdom track. Just keep plugging along, you'll either see the results you want, or make enough money to buy the results you want.

When you equip an unid gold, watch what your health does. If it goes +30, you know the weapon has a +30 mod.

I don't think there is a way to tell if it is 20/20 sundering or 15^50.

So while you will get some good sundering mods and damage inscriptions, you will rarely get a +30 hp mod through buying unid golds. But the other night, I bought about 100 unid golds, and did get about 4 +30 mods. I guess the person selling them didn't have time to check them all, or just didn't care.

I honestly never knew of that. In fact. I'm amazed that this hasn't been nerfed. ANet has nerfed every other thing in the game that is useful, why not this.

Take Wild Blow and go to Temple of Balthazar. Test the damage with a clean weapon of the same type, then test the unidentified item.
