there is white, light blue, purple, gold and green it thats what you are asking.
its based on rarity, white is common, light blue usually has somekind of modifier, purples (sometimes called grapes) usually have a better one or maybe 2, golds are the best and greens are not modifiable and drop (only?) from bosses.
White drops are what you will usually get, if you are trying for the wisdom title identifying gold items adds 1 to that track. The list I gave above is the common to uncommon track (white-green).
Does this answer your question?

Greens drop from a boss more or less. Like the Mallyx Weapons and the greens from chests at the end of Dungeons (like Cynder's Aegis).
Basically green items are unique in that they drop in one zone only.
White is very common
Blue is common
Purple (aka "grapes") is uncommon
Gold is rare
Green is unique
Note that if two items have the exact skin and stats, the item color means nothing in terms of combat performance, but it does matter when selling it to other people.

In addition Greens cannot be modded or salvaged, as weapons go some are very good others less so.
They usually have a skill requirement of 9 against the top golds where its more commonly 13.
These days golds seem to fetch highter prices but only when they are max damage with perfect stats.
Some greens still fetch very high prices though.
