Can You Get Banned In GW For Swearing?

I always thought that since there was an option to set the level of chat filter in the OPTIONS section of the game, that swearing was allowed & if you didn't like it then you should turn your chat filter on.

Now I'm beginning to think that it's infact NOT allowed.

So can you get banned for it? I only ask because yes I swear ingame but if it's going to get me banned then I'll stop doing it.

A slip of the tongue here or there won't get you in much trouble, especially amoung friends/guildies. A massive, racist tirade in local chat in Lion's Arch is not acceptable. I think you can tell the difference.

However, even if you do get banned for swearing, it's only a temporary ban (ie, for 48-72 hours). You won't be perminately banned for language violations unless you get banned for it multiple times.

Straight from the EULA, So My guess would be yes, you can get banned for excessive swearing!

Yeah I got a 72 hour ban for swearing at this dude who was telling me to stop selling cr*p. I admit yes I wasn't selling the best items but he had no right to tell me NOT to sell them & that they were cr*p so I swore at him. The next thing I knew, I was banned.

That's why I asked. I just don't want to swear at anybody again & get banned only to find out that THIS time it was a permanent ban.

I think Anet judges offensive speech based on the content of the words more than the words chosen. You can swear a little bit and get away with it, but spewing out racist/discriminatory statements is a fast way to get banned.

...but then this raises the question as to what is deemed a swearword! For instance, to be 'pissed' over here means something entirely different than it does in the States where it isn't deemed a swearword! Same as 'wanker', swearie over here but not in the States.

If you feel the need to vent on some in-game cretin for whatever matter, just swear at them in Latin. Works a treat for me.

Usually, from what i've heard, A-net only gets angry at those who are really obnoxious, meaning they are racist, sexist, or just tell random people to F-off. I don't think people are usually offended by swear words in general, only when they are directed at someone do people get angry. If you die and go oh shit, I doubt people will be too fussy.

If you do so excessively and people report you for it, then yes, I imagine that it is a bannable offense.

Also, the filter doesn't always work because there are people who work around the filter.

Exactly. You could probably swear as much as you want, but as soon as you made some really nasty racist comments--especially ones that don't involve actual curse words--that's what they'd go after. Anything that a player's chat filter would catch normally is probably alright to say in a casual context.

To put it another way, they've never once said "swearing" was against the rules. What they have said is that "abusive language" is. You can be abusive without a single utterance of f*** or s***.

For me I see this type much more often "vulgar"...to the point that I have basically turned OFF /local chat entirely

I'm not a prude by no means, did my time in the military as well as our fine public school system heh

But I get sick and tired of seeing Juvenal's go on and on about BJ's and a seemingly endless spew of sex talk...

There's a time and place for that and an Open chat in a game environment is not it imo

It actually irritates me quite a bit, because I'd like to be able to see if there were people who needed a hand with something or had a question I might be able to answer.

Instead I play for the most part alone with my Henchmen and work on Quests (exclusive PvE player here heh)

The game imo would be so much more entertaining if that type of behavior/language wasn't tolerated. But I've seen it too much and too often to think that Mods actually inforce or care about it that much...I guess I could be mistaken though.

A swear word here or there is nothing to me. It happens...though I "try" myself to not ever use that kind of language in a public game environment. You just never know who's playing next to you. They might be young or someone who that kind of language offends quite easily. That's just how I look at it.

Now in a group with people I know or in my house or my car...I'll say what I ##%^ well please lol

But not in a game, among other players.

Well, just the fact that you named your post "my take on this game's language issues" suggests you may feel that Guild Wars has more of a problem with vulgar language and such than other games? As someone who has played a lot of online games, I can tell you quite confidently that's not the case. There's a very good reason all online game boxes are adorned with the following:

Anet recognizes that they can set up as many Chat Filters as they please but its not ever ever ever going to go away because players have brains and will figure out ways to circumvent it. In-game GM's are an expensive luxury that a free-to-play game rarely has, and even they can only be in one place at one time. The only real answer is to print on the box that Anet can't really vouch for what other players will say in-game and to a degree, can't really control it. If the customer would potentially be offended, its simply not the right game for them.
