No XP or drops for afk and out of range?

I was helping a friend power level the other night, and he zoned into an explorable area with me, and then said he was going to minimize the GW window and go do something else while I killed everything. So that's what I did.

When he came back, his XP hadn't increased by a single point!

So do players only get XP if they are within radar range of the foes being killed and if their GW window is "on top"? What if they are within range, and their GW window is active, but they are afk? Do they get XP then?

Also, does the same thing go for weapon and item drops? I didn't think about it much then, but I don't think this person got any drops from the foes either. If so, it seems I should have gotten a larger share of drops.

I wonder if the gold i picked up got shared with him?

To gain experience, you must be considered "in combat" with a particular enemy. The most common ways to trigger this are to let it enter your aggro bubble or to cast a spell on an ally who is fighting it.

Drops are a little more lenient; I think the test is whether or not your name is greyed out whenever the monster dies.

There is some "formula" the developers use for XP. For instance:

-A bonder will get XP when he never entered the enemy aggro (I am not sure if this is true at full radar range, but it is within a certain distance)
-A BiP or healer will get XP when outside of aggro - S/he uses a spell on someone who was considered "in combat"
-If you do some damage to a foe and that foe dies within X seconds, you get XP, whether in aggro or not. Ranger with longbow/poisoned then foe dies out of aggro = XP. Damage a foe then 2 minutes later the foe dies from a flame/ice spout = No XP.

In any case the formulas appear to work good. If you took part in the battle in any way it seems to give you XP.

You definitely will get no XP or drops outside of radar range. As it should be.

This is what determines whether or not you get drops or XP

This isn't entirely true. I used to be an Orders necro in ToPK frequently, and it was commonplace for me to miss out on xp for kills.

There seems to be some distinction made among party-wide skills. OotV wasn't enough to include me in the sharing; I had to throw in an occasional Heal Party to work off any death penalty that accrued.

Thanks all. This helps. Are gold drops still shared with ther person who is out of radar range? They don't seem to get item drops, but do they still get a share of the gold that is picked up?
