I'm pretty sure that I got a black dye within my first day or two in pre...but at the time I didn't know that dye was valuable, let alone black dye (at the time even 200g would have been a TON of gold to me), so I sold it to the merchant for 1g.
I think it was black because I recall thinking, "Well, what a bore - what's the point of this black dye when you can buy grey dye from the merchant for 50g? They're practically the same color. How do you get armor with colors on it?"

I got a black dye drop once, and after that got a white dye drop then. Then 10 mins later I got purple, blue, and yellow dye drops. It was a happy day for me

Yesterday me and my guildies did the Underworld and the smites drop me a Black Dye and a Glob of Ectoplasm.

But for my 23 months of playing this game, I guess I had only 4~5 black dyes.
Red dye love me anyway... I had like 800 red dye (+ my armor dyed in red).

Congrats. Personally, I got my first black dye from the 1st or 2nd Abnormal Seed I killed outside of Pre-Searing Ascalon on my friends account (this was the day before Prophecies went live, and I hadn't pre-ordered like he had).
Of course, since then I've only found 3 or 4.
I'd only sell it if you really need the money or you really don't want black. Basic equips are usually cheap enough, especially in Nightfall where quest reward money helps you along more, so it shouldn't be too hard to get the cash for your first max armor set. Plus it's fun to take it a bit slower your first time through.

I just got another one. This is amazing. I have been playing three weeks and have gotten two black dye drops...lol

I haven't had a dye drop for over 2 months!!!! my last black was about 6 months ago!!!
