I'd /notsign things that really are special, like the Tengu mask. As much as I desperately want one, I just didn't get Factions until later in 2006 and there's no reason why I should have one.
But I missed out last Halloween and nearly missed out this time because of the event being on Tuesday/Wednesday. I work a retail job to pay my way through school, and after about September I don't have weekdays free. I'd like to be able to get a pumpkin head, and if they would have a redo on Saturday or Sunday, it'd be so much better than losing a bunch of sleep in the middle of the week.
And logging in before leaving doesn't always work, because the servers are under such stress during events that I often get lagspiked off within 30 minutes.
A chance to acquire 1 hat through long hard quests.

I think that both sides have valid points. But I still believe a solution can be found that satisfies both parties.
To satisfy both sides, I think that if a hat is highly popular then subsequent events should offer a hat that's similar but unique. A great example of a time Anet did this previously was with the Furious Pumpkin Crown from 2006. It allowed people to obtain a pumpkin hat, but it is clearly distinguishable from the previous year's Pumpkin Crown. As a result I feel that my Pumpkin Crown from 2005 is still special enough, because people (mostly me ) can clearly see that it's unique from the 2006 version. At the same time people that longed for the original were able to get a different version in '06.
That said, I think the original idea is fine personally. I don't particularly think having a proof of attendance hat in game is as important as allowing people a respectable way of obtaining an in-game item they'd enjoy. But I also accept that the OP might very well be out of luck forever.

I think you should at least allow people who had hats but lost them before the hat maker to get those said hats back. I understand the thing about not making it to events, but a ton of us did and for diff reasons don't have the hats anymore. A lot of you are forgetting that those of us who were here since day one only had a tiny tiny tiny bit of storage for a lot of diff chars.
