So my first character I started about a month ago was a W/Me. I got pretty frustrated with the game because I never seemed to amass money like everyone else; I died all the time; and worst of all it seemed like every level took forever to attain.

For no good reason I started a Ranger the other day, mostly because I wanted to pick the female skin since I was tired of staring at a man's ass for hours (). But now it's like something has clicked - not only am I much better at fighting, selling, trading, armor, etc., but I also am getting all these drops I never did before, and the levels are breezing by.

After two days of light playtime I've gotten to lvl 11 and have completed all the missions and quests up to Nolani, but what's crazy is all the crap I'm getting from mob drops.

Whereas before all I got was whites and various crap, I now get dyes, keys, purples, and even some salvageable armor with runes.

To you cynical, jaded lvl20s this isn't a big deal, but I'm pretty elated that I'm finally getting money, drops, and XP like normal.

I wonder what was wrong with that Warrior...

You say that like people with lvl20 characters - the level where everything gets rolling and starts to come together - are elitists and/or a seperate game population.

Nonetheless, it won't last for too long. I'd enjoy it while it lasts, bro.

What was wrong? My guess is you weren't having fun. It's good when people find what they like, frontline midline or backline. Usually when you enjoy yourself things go much quicker, and all the good things that happen stick in your brain more so than the bad things.

Also, chances are you're getting better drops and more XP because you're playing in higher level areas. It's not like warriors get less xp than any other class haha

He didn't make a general statement about all level 20's, just the ones with big heads that are unable to look at things from a newer persons perspective.

Basically he just doesn't want to get flamed because he's new to the game, that's at least what I got from it.

Nothing was wrong, drops are random and can change drastically from map to map.

I vanquished 2 maps in Tyria yesterday and got 1 purple and a handfull of whites on one map and 2 gold items dropped instantly on the second map.

As for your being better experiance does bring one a better understanding of how to play and the Ranger may just suit your play style a little better letting you move faster and aquire more in less time.

Read a magazine once that when a male subject sees a female subject (animated or not) a male's brains starts to work in a different way, you most likely got attracted by your Ranger and payed more attention to her and probably started playing more so got more experienced. And now you want her to be the best female Ranger out there and....! Uhmm I think I should stop now. >.>

Anyway, congratulations on learning the game.

Ha, explains a lot of stuff for me (but I play male chars anyways ). I play some female chars every now and then (mostly PvP, my PvE being male chars for most) and it's kinda... different. I don't pay attention to the same things, but then again I'm just plain weird. I guess that's what happens when you go from a character you've been playing for XXX hours, and a character you constantly reroll (anyone ever feel out of place when they reroll?)... but even more noticeable for me when I switch the gender.

And yes, sometimes it's a question of play style. My first was a warrior - got deleted quickly. Back then I didn't feel comfortable as a frontliner. Then I got a necromancer, and he's nearly 28 months old. My main too.

As for drops, I doubt it's related to your character and/or profession. I know when I farm a spot for a long while, my drops start to suck. I switch around for a while, start to do mission, questing, work on a new character, and then go back to my farm runs after 2-3 days. And sometimes it's just pure luck... or lack thereof.

Just because you can't have fun doesn't mean you need to ruin it for everyone else, stop boycotting Arena Net unless you have a valid agrument.

Everyone has something they don't like about Guild Wars, even I but that doesn't mean it's horrible for me, if you think it's bad then get off this forum and never get back.

Indeed. I never did understand how people develop the nerve to complain about the bad things in this game when the good largely outweighs the bad.

In any case OP I'm glad things are going well for you now, but if you should run into a bad luck streak or anything of the sort just don't let it get to you. Staying positive can help to fix a lot of problems, you'd be surprised.

I do notice that some of my characters seem to get certain drops. My canthan mesmer seems to get more dye drops (so when I need dye I play her). My monks (smiting I add) never seem to get much good stuff even though one of them is the one that id's everything (wisdom title), however if they play with my guildee they get better drops........
Random for me just isnt quite as random as they suggest...though as of late the golds seem to be dropping more and last week was a record dye week for me with 10 dropping for me! (no black or white, that was the previous week).
When (or if) I figure out the system I will try to let the characters that get the best drops play when I need the cash , but until then I will try to figure it out...........(need to contact old college buddy who was stats major,.....)

Order of my GW characters creation (none were deleted and all are lvl20):

Necro-Ele-Warrior-Monk-Ritualist-Dervish-Ranger-Paragon-Warrior
My thoughts:
1. Necro was the best - shared all my nostaglic moments.
2. Ele is my main character - not necessarily fun, but pretty powerful.
3. Warrior was ok, slow leveling.
4. Monking was boring.
5. Rit was nice, enjoyed this one before the nerfs.
6. Dervish was nice too.
7. Ranger was a breakthrough.
8. Paragon was a bit boring, yet quite a powerful cheerleader.
9. Warrior again - a little bored, and a female knight in shining armor with big swords did not help the feeling either.

Its all because of the Ranger. IN MY OPINION (I do not want anyone saying "how dare you presume to make this declaration..." etc, etc), rangers are the most versatile and fun class in the game. There are many ways to be a ranger, whereas with a Warrior, you just stand there hitting people on the head... Needless to say, I'm a Ranger, so I'm a bit biased...

Good to hear ya found a good character you like. I remember when I started out I made an Ele, but got bored really fast. So I made a ranger, like you, and started having way more fun. Ranger is now my main profession. I'm just starting another Elementist, this time I'm learning it more, since I already know the game and if I ever get bored I just go to another character.

Reminds me of me and my sin, hated prophecies sin came out and now Hes gone through all 3 campaigns (have to buy eotn)
and Im having more fun than with any other class =P (cept the dervish sometimes)

The ranger is a very fun class, and staring at charr's ugly mug's from up close may of been draining your fun....charr loook SOOOO much better from far away >.>

lmfao. the exact same thing happened to me. Had Gw since the beginning and had a warrior until the november of that year. Then i saw i only had like 3k which was ridiculously low and i was doing terribly. So I go ahead and make my female ranger. BAM. she is now my main character and my all time most prosperous/favorite character. Well actually my dervish has done pretty damn well too for a char thats only existed 1 year.

Warrior's are a notorious choice for "first characters", although I'm not sure why. You will find yourself dying more because you're a front-line-guy. You need to be in the middle of a mob, face to face, glaring at your enemy over locked swords whilst everyone else yells encouragement and hurls fireballs from a distance.

I did what you had in reverse. My first character was a Ranger...took a while to level, ages to get anywhere, and at level 19 (and 2 weeks in) I made a Warrior, and dam did she hit 20 fast. She was 20 before my Ranger (who I maxed out of sympathy about a week later).

I guess it's because, once you've played X amount of the game once, you know what you're doing and where you're going with each quest. And enjoy your first character's in Prophecies. After you've done it a few times, for alot of people, it loses the feeling of "WOW! This is leet" and becomes "LF Runner Droks/Lions/Desert". Although there is alot of max-level content which you get to explore once you hit the higher levels and on to 20.

You're right - so far whenever I say stuff like this in-game all I get is 'god, 4K is nothing, dude' and 'lmfao, thirty Charr is easy, wait until you get to blah-blah-blah'; so I was just admitting that my victories are indeed small in the grand scheme of things.

Quote:

For me it was because it was the least intimidating character. I'd never played an MMO before, but I felt like I could be competent with a Warrior because I guessed (hoped) that without all the magic and spells to figure out I could play it more like the hack-n-slash action RPGs I was used to. All the talk of regen rates, pips, and various effects freaked me out at the beginning. I still say GW has a tough learning curve.

Quote:

So you're saying that Warriors are expected to kick off regularly?

I think its a normal experience. My second character (my necro) went much eaiser in the game then my first (my ele) just because I had game mechanics down. However, over time, I grew bored of my necro and hardly ever play her anymore. Now, my ele has 3 times the xp of any of my other characters and is still my favorite.

Eh... everybody has a different experience/story to tell.

A lot of people start out with a Warrior since it's considered the quintessential newbie class by many. And for good reason(Wammos anyone?). It's simplistic to play compared to most classes, as you just pick a weapon, stock up on adrenaline skills, and push the pretty buttons when they light up. Although there can be more depth to it, it's a class that can still be moderately effective with a mediocre build and a mediocre player behind it. And lets face it, most of the time the casters only concern is that the meatheads keep things busy enough for them to pull off their big spells, which any warrior can do effectively just by charging out front.

Friggin Amen. all my characters are females for that reason.

What's wrong with a warrior? You probably have frenzy on your bar.

Yea amen to that! Warrior's a good Profession when and if you can use them. Best choice for running locations.

Good frontline defense. Hard-tanking offense. (Tanking warrior's arent dead, not yet )

Gotta disagree with you on the running, D/A's really usurped the spot as #1 runners shortly after Nightfall came out.

And Warriors in GW aren't as much about tanking as they are about dishing out physical damage and putting the pressure on the enemy casters. GW doesn't require tanking on the same level as other MMORPGs.

This sounds kind of like what happened to me, my very first character was a mesmer (lol), which i absolutely HATED (go figure). I basically forced myself to get him to level 20 and max armor, then against my better judgement I IMMEDIATELY made an elementalist. This instantly made me like this game, as inside I am just a bit of a pyro

It's kind of hard to know what sort of character you will like when you don't even know what the characters do :\
