Hello everyone,
I have some questions about what class to choose. Let me just say i am and i suppose always will be an alt junky hehe. What i am looking for is a class that can pve farm extremly well with myself or the heros you can make.
I have both prophecy and Nightfall and will get the other expansions as well, I just didnt see a need to get them all at once although money is not problem so if i need them all at once for a better choice in a starting char i can get them. The reasoning behind this character is i figure ill need to farm a good bit at first if i want to be competative in pvp? As this will eventually be the ultimate goal to get into a good guild and pvp. Any help and or advice would be awesome. But remember i am totally new to the game although ive had the game since it came out im just now playing. So be gentle on the abbreviations hehe. Also if there are any really good guilds recruiting let me know as well

Welcome to to gw Argost... you new, old-timer...

In my opinion it is always good to start out the game as a melee class, so a warrior would be a good class to learn with and potentally finish the game with...

Warriors are always needed for groups no matter where in the game you are...
They do a great job at soloing the game, and farming (with a good skill setup)...

P.S. It really doesnt matter what gw expansion you start with they are all pretty straight-forward...

I hope u find this helpful... GL and HF

If you're totally new to the game, I would suggest starting out as a warrior. Warriors are very straightforward to pick up and learn the basics with, and are quite good at farming too. Warriors are also used in a lot of PvP teams, and can be useful in just about any environment.

Another relatively straightforward profession to learn the game is with is the elementalist. I'm not so sure about how well an elementalist can farm although they have several defensive abilities as well as loads of raw firepower so I guess they could farm to a reasonable extent. Elementalists are also popular in PvP teams as they have a lot of utility skills they let them blind/snare/knockdown enemies.

Seems so far warrior is the way to go. So with that let me ask this. Can they heal? Also i see everyone talking about split classes. Should i level the warrior to a certain level then switch to another profession? Like i said this guy will more than likely be my farmer. Also should i start him in nightfall for the heros he can get to help?

In gw you are suggested by the npcs at an early point in the gameplay to obtain a secondary porfession, which allow a warrior with minimal healing ability, to learn monk or even ranger as a secondary profession ( to better compensate for his lack of healing) (but you can have any combination you wish)...

This allows a wide variety of character builds...

About heroes, you get them in both Nightfall, and Factions, so it really doesnt matter...

I guess i dont quite understand the multi classing in this game. So if i start as a warrior and change to say ranger, Would i then lose being able to wear warrior type armor and weapons? or would changing just allow me to use what skills from ranger i wanted? in other words if i want more warrior than ranger should i start as ranger and change to warrior so as i level im getting more warrior type skills? Or as i level do i get both skills from both classes? I apologize if this is posted somewhere else and also thank you for answering

IIRC, you can't get heroes unless you have Nightfall (or GW:EN)

Your primary profession never changes. You select a secondary profession, which you could change later in the game. You wear the armor of your primary profession.

Oh ... Welcome to the game and the forums!

If your ulitmate goal is to pvp competitivly, then you won't acctually need to farm at all. Guild wars gives you the option to make pvp guys, which can do only pvp related gameplay and unlock all there skills and armor by winning pvp related gameplay. in Guild Wars max stats armor and equipment is not hard to get and does not take a lot of cash, farming is usually just for stuff that looks pretty

Warriors do not have any native skills that allow them to heal other team members, but they do have some pretty good ways to heal themselves, as well as reduce the damage they take in combat.

As far as splitting your profession goes, you can never change your primary profession (a primary warrior will always be a warrior with all the strengths and weaknesses thereof). However, you can choose a secondary profession which you can use to cover your weaknesses and enhance your strengths. A popular profession combination for warriors is warrior/monk (generally abbreviated to W/Mo or wammo), as having a monk secondary gives you some more healing/protection options and the ability to use reusable resurrection spells, as well as some hex/condition removal which warriors generally lack. You can also change your secondary profession once you get far enough into the game, so if you don't like being a W/Mo you could change to be a W/R or a W/E or whatever you would prefer to be.

You could start a new warrior in either Prophecies or Nightfall; whichever one you would prefer (you have different face/hair/skin tone options for each start). As you have both games, I would suggest taking a warrior through the Prophecies areas no matter which chapter you start in because you get a lot of free skills from the quests there (making it easier to build up a respectable skill repertoire on a budget).

So for pvp the gear you can get by farming/adventuring isint that good for pvp? I figured it would take a long while to build up a good character with gear via adventuring and farming.

You do not need to farm at all to do pvp.

In the arenas you can gain points called Balthazar Faction, these points can be used to unlock skills and items that you can then use in pvp, not in pve however.

One good and fast way to unlock some skills for pvp is to make at least one of every class of char and lvl them to 5-10, that will let you unlock some base skills for 0 cost to you if you follow all the quests along the way. If you hold off spending cash on armor, something you really do not need till your around lvl 11+, assuming you dont skip quests or get a run, then you will have plenty of cash to buy skills.

The cost of skills climbs dramatically but stops at 1K per skill, thats 1 000 gold.

So the gear people farm for is only used in pve? And if thats the case why farm? once you hit 20 there is no point to the pve side? other than making your char look nice?

If you enjoy PvE there is plenty to do after you hit level 20.

Well that is good to know then and yes i like both pvp and pve but it sounds like the gear is different for both sides? i mean you dont use pvp gear in pve and you cant use pve gear in pvp is that correct?

Not exactly. If you make a PvP character, then that character cannot access the PvE game, but they can gain access to items you've unlocked through PvE play, or things you've purchased w/ Balthazar faction or by buying PvP packs.

I'm about 90% PvE & 10% PvP, so pretty much everything I use I got in PvE.

My vote is still Nightfall as the best overall campaign. Prophecies has some nostalgia to it, and Factions is great if you just want fast progression and like the Asian theme.

Awesome ok that makes sense. So it would be best to create a pvp character and then use my pve char to help equip him along with the pvp char getting items from his pvp points? And once again guys you all have been great and very patient with me and i truly applaud you for this

PvP characters, so long as they (the equipment) are unlocked for the account, can make any equipment they want, for free, and as many times as you like. They are, however, customised to prevent abuse.

There is really no reason to put PvE items on a PvP character for their use unless you haven't unlocked the mod/inscription yet.

my reason for farming with my pve character was to

1. unlock pvp items through pve for free (if you salvage a good drop in pve its contents may unlock something you dont have in pvp)
2. to take my prized pve character into pvp with everything a pvp character could have.
3. to buy all the cool things i wanted

the only benefit a PVP character or Balthazar unlock points have for a PVE character are

Heros can use any skill unlocked though pvp or pve
A few titles
And skills unlocked with balthazar points can be learned by a pve character through skill trainers or skill tomes at an earlier stage in the game.

PVE characters can unlock skills mods runes inscriptions through play that in turn can help the PVP only character.

It all sounds rather confusing but its not once you play it a few times...

IF PVP is your thing i suggest diving straight into and learning it from the get go because there are serious conflicts in the way to the game is played PVE vs PVP

PVP will teach you the better way to play imo...most PVP players can excell at PVE but that isn't always true of PVE players....they have alot of "unlearning" to do inorder to be successful at PVP because the game play is totally different...or rather the goals are different.

Welcome, it's a bit outdated but the manual for prophecies is really helpful for the basics (if u get to a section about attribute refunds for instance lol, its been taken out of the game). Nightfall manual has more of th eupdated schemes.
You seem to know what your doing lol. took me ages until i became a member of these forums. wiki.guildwars.com is a very helpful website you may like.

This game isn't really about leveling. once you've hit level 20 its mostly about the combinations of skills and attribute points you use.
You mentioned something about needing to do pvp for pve. you don't really have to inless you want to obtain balthazar faction to buy your account skills for heros. Also in the factions game there is a pvp game called alliance matches. You can gain alliance faction for your account which can buy you many things in pve. You can obtain this faction though pve anyway. Well you said you wernt going to get the other expansions yet so i dont know why i sed this

Actually i went ahead and bought factions yesterday. So i have them all but the newest one. From reading everyones posts it seems as if there is alot to do post 20 which is nice. the way i was looking i thought it pretty much ended at 20 and all there was after that was fluff.

lvl 20 content in PvE is mostly geared towards titles and the look of your char.

There are some areas that are only open to you once you complete the storyline, and after that they are repeatable. Many of the best items in the game, looks wise, drop only in these End of Game areas.

PvE is most fun when you play with others. It is also easiest to complete most zones with live people rather than heros or hench.

Thats only true if you get lucky or have friends, at least for me anyway. If you know what you are doing, heros/hench is easier, you won't lose because someone else messed up. Besides that, it is much faster to grab 3 heros/4hench and go, instead of waiting for a group to get a monk then disbanding after you wipe.
